Salt in My Soul
Salt in My Soul: An Unfinished Life | Mallory Smith
8 posts | 4 read | 15 to read
The diaries of a remarkable young woman who was determined to live a meaningful and happy life despite her struggle with cystic fibrosis and a rare superbugfrom age fifteen to her death at the age of twenty-five. Diagnosed with cystic fibrosis at the age of three, Mallory Smith grew up to be a determined, talented young woman who inspired others even as she privately raged against her illness. Despite the daily challenges of endless medical treatments and a deep understanding that shed never lead a normal life, Mallory was determined to live happy, a mantra she followed until her death. Mallory worked hard to make the most out of the limited time she had, graduating Phi Beta Kappa from Stanford University, becoming a cystic fibrosis advocate well-known in the CF community, and embarking on a career as a professional writer. Along the way, she cultivated countless intimate friendships and ultimately found love. An eloquent writer, Mallory recorded her thoughts and observations for more than ten years about struggles and feelings too personal to share during her life, leaving instructions for her mother to publish her work posthumously. She hoped that her writing would offer insight to those living with, or loving someone with, chronic illness. What emerges is a powerful and inspiring portrait of a brave young woman who did not allow herself to be defined by disease. Her words offer comfort and hope to readers, even as she herself was facing death. Salt in My Soul is a beautifully crafted, intimate, and poignant tribute to a short life well livedand a call for all of us to embrace our own lives as fully as possible.

I chose this for the “Athlete” prompt not only because the author played sports in high school and college, but because she was a fighter. Mallory Smith valiantly battled cystic fibrosis until the very end. This book includes excerpts of the journal she kept for 10 years until her death at 25. The editing is choppy but the writing itself is powerful.

This is not perfect. The style of real journal entries is not my favorite. But this book is probably more personal to me than any other book could be.
This is Mallory‘s story, moving, inspiring and terribly sad. It‘s also a story that is so very close to home for me, I almost didn‘t read it. But it‘s the first time I‘ve had the opportunity to read about a CF sufferer, a condition that my hubby also has. So I had to..⬇️

KarenUK It was painful, and eye-opening, and hopefully has given me more insight into how it might feel to be him. As heartbreaking as it was, for me, it felt necessary. 4y
MrBook The ones we can most poignantly relate to always carry a gravity, don‘t they. *biiiig hug* 4y

This week I need to stay focused and try and finish all these that I have on the go.... that‘s the plan anyway! 🤓👍📚

Cinfhen Wow! You‘re brave for reading tagged book 💔wishing you strength and peace 😘😘😘 4y
KarenUK @cinfhen thank you lovely.... 💕 I so rarely get to read books about others with Paul‘s condition, I felt I should read Mallory‘s story, tough as it will be. There‘s actually a fiction book coming out soon too, that I‘ve seen great buzz about.... 4y
Cinfhen Ohhhh, both books sound powerful 💜 4y

A mini one book #bookhaul today that I‘m starting to regret.....
I‘ve heard such amazing things about this posthumously published memoir. Mallory Smith suffered from CF, the same condition as my husband has... which is why I bought it. But I just read the back blurbs, and the inside flap, and not sure if I‘m up to it......

#TBRtemptation post 2! This is the accumulated diary entries and observations of a woman who was determined to live her life to the fullest knowing her life would be cut short due to cystic fibrosis and a rare superbug. For 10 years, from 15 to her passing at 25, Mallory determined to “live happy”, experiencing life and graduating at the top of her Stanford class. Her entries were published posthumously by her mother. #blameLitsy #blameMrBook 😎

JanuarieTimewalker13 Oh this sounds great!!! Thanks for posting!! 5y
DeeLew Thank you for posting. I am going to have to read this one. I hope I can get through it without crying. I had a dear childhood friend that died from complications of CF. It was heartbreaking to see him suffer so much in his short lifetime. 5y
KarenUK My husband suffers from CF. I‘m not sure if I can or can‘t read this but I‘m stacking as a maybe. Might have to be the right time..... 5y

This book is excerpts from a diary of a young woman from age 15 until@her death from cystic fibrosis (around the age of 25 or 26). Her story is compelling, but the format is not. Many entries dive deeply into medical minutia and others are trivial. The overall affect that is. Being sought, of a complete picture of a complete life is not quite achieved. It feels crappy to not give all the thumbs up to a book about a woman who struggled ...

Well-ReadNeck And shared her story. And, there were some good parts, but the format and editing made it less than it might have been. #netgalley 5y
