Eleanor
Eleanor: A Novel | Jason Gurley
Eleanor and Esmerelda are identical twins with a secret language all their own, inseparable until a terrible accident claims Esmes life. Eleanors family is left in tatters: her mother retreats inward, seeking comfort in bottles; her father reluctantly abandons ship. Eleanor is forced to grow up more quickly than a child should, and becomes the target of her mothers growing rage. Years pass, and Eleanors painful reality begins to unravel in strange ways. The first time it happens, she walks through a school doorway, and finds herself in a cornfield, beneath wide blue skies. When she stumbles back into her own world, time has flown by without her. Again and again, against her will, she falls out of her world and into other, stranger ones, leaving behind empty rooms and worried loved ones. One fateful day, Eleanor leaps from a cliff and is torn from her world altogether. She meets a mysterious stranger, Mea, who reveals to Eleanor the weight of her familys loss. To save her broken parents, and rescue herself, Eleanor must learn how deep the well of her mothers grief and her fathers heartbreak truly goes. Esmereldas death was not the only tragic loss in her familys fragmented history, and unless Eleanor can master her strange new abilities, it may not be the last.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ This was a very very sad magical realism story. I have never read such a down book that used magical realism. But it was really good and very beautifully displayed grief in a small family. I would like to see what else this author has written. This was my #bookspinbingo No. 16 pick.

I mean, you had me at Eleanor since that's what we're naming our little girl when she arrives on 8/4!!
@Meaw_catlady thanks for the fun giveaway!! And the awesome Eleanor in my scroll feed ❤️
1. I would definitely miss Gizmo my orange tabby bff.
2. Start traveling earlier and study abroad.
3. I love that although I'm 36, my husband and I decided to add a little one to our family. #geriatricpreggo

MotionChickness My dad has Eleanor... Apparently three different versions were released before the final, and he has two of them. 😂 The endings might all be different. Talk about confusing. Jason Gurley also did the cover work for my dads book 😊 He‘s a cool guy! 5y

Even though most schools are back in session I find that I can't focus on anything to dense. So, until the end of August I'm going to read only fiction. Starting this today.

This book could easily be retitled Heartbreak & Tragedy (a tale to make your soul cry). This book is beautifully written and the story is told with a precise grace that will lovingly stab you in the heart over and over again. I cannot recommend it enough. This will remind you that you're alive.

Won this on Goodreads AGES ago, but just finally read this one.

Gurley's beautiful, fantastical writing manages to be heartbreaking and hopeful at the same time. Underneath the fantasy elements is an exploration of the very real shape of a person's grief and the domino effects of loss. The narrative style took a bit to get used to and there are moments where the foreshadowing feels heavy handed, but it's a delightful reading experience.

For some reason when I read this prompt I initially thought I didn't have any any books to match and then after five seconds of looking I pulled this one off my shelves. I cannot believe it didn't automatically come to mind because I love this cover (and hate the sticker that I can't remove without tearing it). #eyesoncovers #maybookflowers

Here is a really bad #shelfie. I live in s studio so there is no room for more bookshelves. That is why each shelf has two rows of books (and I use my kitchen cabinets for more book storage). #aprilbookshowers

MicheleinPhilly Oh man. I lived in a TEENY TINY studio for 3 years. I'm amazed that I didn't get buried in piles of books stacked precariously EVERYWHERE. 7y

Beautiful, grounded fantasy, Jason Gurley's Eleanor is an exquisite dive into three generations of trauma and absolute regret. Eleanor is the type of book you want to hoist into the hands of every reader you know without further comment other than "read." I knew very little going into it, and it satisfyingly kept morphing until the final page.
Thanks Bloggingforbooks for books for free paperback copy for my feedback.

Suzze I am surprised at how many books still have covers that easily rip or get damaged by easy to remove stickers. So many stores use them, and those stores then return the damaged books to the publisher. 7y
KarenUK Yes! 😡 7y
JPeterson Yes! My old library use to put stickers on any holds you had, and I felt like every time you removed it, the book got more damaged. But since they had your name and library card number...had to be removed 7y

My TBR for September is probably a bit ambitious. Work and school are going to take up a lot of time, but I'm still hoping to read all of these this month! A Torch Against the Night is a carry over from last month and quite a few of these are part of a backlog of Goodreads giveaways I'm slowly but surely finishing. Any standouts to you? Ones I should absolutely make time for this month?

Alicia Looks like a great selection!!! 8y

Megaled 1. I love that you made a list for Sept TBR 2. We both know you will hit the stretch books- if not beyond. You're a book reading machine- like Rory Gilmore. 🤓📖 8y
megt @Megaled I'm trying to be better about actually reading the books that I buy! You know, I stayed of buying loads of books and then leaving them to collect dust on my shelves (or in bags...) while I read books from the library instead. 🤓 And I certainly won't hate hitting the stretch books if I can! We'll see how much time the school reading takes! 8y

So glad that I gave into the impulse and bought this on my last trip to Portland. It is a beautifully written novel about family and grief combined with ambitious fantasy elements that elevate what could have been an ordinary novel into something transporting. I will be thinking about this one for days to come.

Good morning!!! Time to kick this readathon's butt!

One of my favorite books this year was Eleanor by Jason Gurley and I think I would love to hear Neil Gaiman narrate it. His voice is so smooth and mysterious, it would be such a nice touch! #24in48

I had such a love hate relationship with this book. The first 100 pages I adored and was thinking it was the best book ever! Then the "sci fi" twist started and caught me off guard.Once I got into it, I was really enjoying the mystery of it all.
