Every Anxious Wave
Every Anxious Wave: A Novel | Mo Daviau
33 posts | 24 read | 39 to read
Good guy Karl Bender is a thirty-something bar owner whose life lacks love and meaning. When he stumbles upon a time-travelling worm hole in his closet, Karl and his best friend Wayne develop a side business selling access to people who want to travel back in time to listen to their favorite bands. It's a pretty ingenious plan, until Karl, intending to send Wayne to 1980, transports him back to 980 instead. Though Wayne sends texts extolling the quality of life in tenth century "Mannahatta," Karl is distraught that he can't bring his friend back.Enter brilliant, prickly, overweight astrophysicist, Lena Geduldig. Karl and Lena's connection is immediate. While they work on getting Wayne back, Karl and Lena fall in love -- with time travel, and each other. Unable to resist meddling with the past, Karl and Lena bounce around time. When Lena ultimately prevents her own long-ago rape, she alters the course of her life and threatens her future with Karl. A high-spirited and engaging novel, EVERY ANXIOUS WAVE plays ball with the big questions of where we would go and who we would become if we could rewrite our pasts, as well as how to hold on to love across time.

When Karl Bender, bartender and former indie rock star, discovers a wormhole in his apartment he uses it to cash a few extra bucks charging people to let them go back to relive their favorite legendary rock concerts. When his friend gets stuck in 980 instead of 1980, he contacts Lena Geduldig, astrophysicist, for help aaand you know the rest :)
I felt like the writing and plot progression could've used more work but it's still a fun read.

I had high hopes for this one and at 288 pages it should have been a quick read but it took way too long to finish and I couldn't bring myself to care about any of the characters. It only doesn't get a pan because the timing on my part to start it when I did may have been a bad decision as there was a lot going on distracting from my reading so maybe that was part of the problem too.

Finished this book while watching this ominous black cloud with water spouts hovering just off shore in the Gulf of Mexico.
This one was between a pick and a so-so for me. I loved the time travel mechanism and the use of time travel to go back and see great concerts that you loved or had missed. If the main characters had the same taste in music as me I might have liked this better. The writing was definitely so-so, but it was a good beach read.

A few of my anticipated 2018 reads inspired by music. Looking forward to reading the tagged book next month for a Time Travel challenge. I've included in the photo some of my colored vinyl 45s from the 90s. I was a little obsessed with Hole and Nirvana. (Another reason I'm looking forward to the tagged book)

I'm only half-doing the readathon but even that minimal bit of effort might get me through this odd, time travel book that I never did read from the May book club I missed.

This book is shaggy and meandering. Rules about time travel are invented (which I suppose they must be) and discarded as needed. But at its broken heart this book is about love and the past.

Karl uses the wormhole in his closet to watch great bands, but when his friend is lost in time he asks Lena, an astrophysicist, for help. Karl and Lena's love twists throughout time in human and messy ways, pre- and post apocalypse. A sweet and salty story.

"...a woman...with a tight black schoolmarm bun who stared blankly at the camera, a look that indicated that she'd never heard of Fugazi."

vivastory Michael Dirda mentioned it in "Browsing." What really intrigued me, aside from Dirda's endorsement of the book, is one of the editors is an editor for Locus magazine 7y

"The number one house rule: the wormhole was only to be used to attend rock concerts of the past. It kept the experience pure and free from the temptation to try to game yourself a better life. Besides, why would we need music if our lives were exactly as we wanted them to be?"

My #currentlisten will hopefully be quite a bit lighter than my last one.

When you find a time traveling wormhole in your closet what else would you do but charge people to go back in time and see bands play? Fugazi anyone?

Zelma I absolutely loved this one. Totally underrated. 7y

So I downloaded this book because the Idea of being able to go back in time and see any rock show ever really appeals to me. What I wouldn't give to see Queen or the Stones in their prime. As with any time travel story, choices are made and lives are changed -- or erased, in some cases. I'm not big on love stories, but I really didn't mind this one so much. It's worth the listen (or read, I guess).

Started this morning while watching the finals of the Australian open at 6am. Kinda cool that one of the concerts mentioned in the book I was actually at... The Cure at giants stadium when I was nineteen!

I have mixed feelings about this one. I really liked the premise and all the band references and the science (I'm a PhD scientist with 90s punk roots), but I just wasn't a huge fan of the characters.

the idea to go back to your very favorite concerts. To see the bands you wished you could have seen? Definitely 3.0 stars. Not the most likable characters...but i recognized them

Clever, involving time travel story. A few laugh out loud moments, some moments of thoughtfulness and - even though I knew almost none of the bands mentioned - managed to dredge up some nostalgia for the nineties. Or, more precisely, for my youth. Listened to the audiobook version and liked the narrator quite a bit, too.

Inventive and odd. At first, it felt like a light, fast-paced, quirky to the point of hipster story, but then I was completely won over. It is an honest, raw, fun, darker-than-expected book with some very thought-provoking scenes. Not perfect but a fun ride. The closet will make sense too!

Picked this book up from the library looking for a book to read on transit and trips and I didn't regret it! It was an amazing read that I would recommend anyone who loves time travel books or is looking to get into the time travel/adventure genre.

"Why would we need music if our lives were exactly as we wanted them to be?" Indie rock, time travel, love. Read this in an afternoon, so fun! Full of references that were pointed right at my 40 year old self, the nostalgia was perfect. Inspired talk about risks of time travel with my kids, too. ?

A poorly written time travel story starring two pretentious music snobs who fall in love through a terribly contrived and senseless scenario. 👎

A feminist, time-traveling, apocalyptic love story with a heavy dose of 90s alt-rock nostalgia. The love story is painful, funny, and deliciously real. All the fantasy surrounding that story makes the relationship feel all the more grounded.
