David Copperfield (Revised)
David Copperfield (Revised) | Charles Dickens
'The most perfect of all the Dickens novels' Virginia Woolf " David Copperfield" is the story of a young man's adventures on his journey from an unhappy and impoverished childhood to the discovery of his vocation as a successful novelist. Among the gloriously vivid cast of characters he encounters are his tyrannical stepfather, Mr Murdstone; his brilliant, but ultimately unworthy school-friend James Steerforth; his formidable aunt, Betsey Trotwood; the eternally humble, yet treacherous Uriah Heep; frivolous, enchanting Dora Spenlow; and the magnificently impecunious Wilkins Micawber, one of literature's great comic creations. In David Copperfield - the novel he described as his 'favourite child' - Dickens drew revealingly on his own experiences to create one of the most exuberant and enduringly popular works, filled with tragedy and comedy in equal measure. This edition uses the text of the first volume publication of 1850, and includes updated suggestions for further reading, original illustrations by 'Phiz', a revised chronology and expanded notes. In his new introduction, Jeremy Tambling discusses the novel's autobiographical elements, and its central themes of memory and identity. For more than seventy years, Penguin has been the leading publisher of classic literature in the English-speaking world. With more than 1,700titles, Penguin Classics represents a global bookshelf of the best works throughout history and across genres and disciplines. Readers trust theseries to provide authoritative texts enhanced by introductions and notes by distinguished scholars and contemporary authors, as well as up-to-datetranslations by award-winning translators."

As with every Dickens book that I‘ve read, I start out amazed at how readable his work is after 170 years! Then things start to bog down for me - Dickens‘ work is so character-driven and this one just meanders through Copperfield‘s life. I think there‘s a little more plot cohesiveness than in Nicholas Nickleby, but, personally, I like to know where my books are going. I‘m a stickler for a good plot. Ending redeemed it, as always. 3.5/5.0⭐️ #2019

rretzler It wasn‘t unpleasant - I can understand why people liked it, but Dickens and his meandering “day in the life” plotting doesn‘t engage me the way I want to be engaged. It was hard for me to choose between Pick and So So, but it‘s probably worth a read since it‘s the most autobiographical of Dickens work. Armitage does a great job of narration 3w
IamIamIam I'm glad that worked out!!! 3w
rretzler @IamIamIam Thanks. Waiting another year before I tackle another! I‘m sure you can relate. 😝🤣 3w

Reading each of these 3 books at the moment and none of them is really keeping my interest. 😞 When it happens with one book, I usually put it aside and start another, but I‘m now up to three and trying to decide if I should keep plugging away or start something else. The next book up is the new Deanna Raybourn, A Dangerous Collaboration, so I know I‘d like it, but I‘d really like to finish the other 3 at some point. Sigh!

RainyDayReading I ran into this not too long ago. I just put them aside and picked up something I knew I was going to enjoy. 1mo
rretzler That‘s probably what I am going to do. The Great Hunt is picking up at little but at page 200 of a 650+ pager, I would expect to be a lot more invested. And Dickens just isn‘t doing it for me. 1mo

rretzler Well that Edit didn‘t work as expected. 😟 1mo
RainyDayReading @rretzler Haha the edits rarely work as expected 🤣 I‘ve heard that The Great Hunt is slow in the beginning but picks up about halfway through. I haven‘t read it yet so I don‘t know for sure. Dickens can be difficult, especially when you‘re not really in the mood for him. 1mo
Fridameetslucy David copperfield asks so many big questions about us as human beings - right from the git go “whether I am the hero of my life...” to our capacity to remain kind toward each other. I hope you return to it. 1mo
rretzler @Fridameetslucy I‘m slowly reading it. I never totally give up on a book, but it will take me some time to get through. 1mo

I finished my one-Dickens-a-year! More autobiographic, less grotesk characters but still typical Dickens. David is an orphan, growing up in a rather well to do environment, but with a lot of distress. There are always people however, who care for him, and guide him into adulthood.

My next Dickens will be Our Mutual Friend, I think. But that‘ll have to wait until next year!

Listening (and reading) for the LibraryThing David Copperfield Group Read.

Ericalambbrown I really liked Richard Armitage‘s performance. His Uriah Heap made my skin crawl, rightly. 3mo
rretzler @Ericalambbrown It certainly does. It took me awhile to get to Uriah Heep , but Armitage certainly goes a great job reflecting what the way I think Heep is going to turn out (bit of a spoiler in his voice, I guess, but then I already knew that was the case) 2mo

I have this intention to read one Dickens each year (there are 10 books of his on the list of #1001books to read before you die). For 2019 this will be David Copperfield, his personal favorite. I have a copy and will listen to the audio version when driving. Fingers crossed, I‘m not a real fan so far (having read three of his books). 🤞

Mdargusch I‘ve never been compelled to read more of his books since reading him in school. But I think one book a year is a great goal! 5mo
Trashcanman Oh no! No! Noooooooo! 5mo
Becker Does your audio book have Richard Armitage narrating? His voice is dreamy and he does an excellent job with the character. I did the audio 2 years ago and really enjoyed it. Good luck. I hope you get some enjoyment out of it. 5mo

TiredLibrarian @Trashcanman HA! 😂😅 5mo
BarbaraBB @Trashcanman 😂😂😂 5mo
BarbaraBB @Becker No, unfortunately not. But my narrator is not too bad either! 5mo
Taylor My favorite Dickens book and one of my favorite books overall. 5mo
AudreyMorris I have not read 4 of his on the list—and that‘s one of them! I seem to like his shorter books more. And I liked him more when I was younger. Now I prefer Trollope! 5mo
BarbaraBB @Taylor I think you are the one who made me decide to read this one! 5mo
BarbaraBB @AudreyMorris I like Trollope better too, although I have only read two of his books so far (he has a lot of works on the 1001 list too!) 5mo

This was a reread for me. It‘s been years since I‘d read it and found it a completely different experience this time. (Funny how ones stage of life can change perspectives on some books.) I read some, listened some. This production was good, in my opinion. Some of the character interpretations were grating, but those characters themselves are kinda awful so it fits.

RadicalReader @Ericalambbrown be sure to check out absolutely wonderful novel and loved the history of learning about Criss‘ growing up and his childhood experiences and his memories with his family and how became inspired to doing the incredible mystifying things he does 4mo

Thinking of my dear grandmother this evening. I have absolutely no question regarding from whom I inherited my bookishness and my love of used books. Christmas of 1993, when I was 20 - the age my daughter is now - she gave me a beautiful set of 6 Nelson Doubleday Charles Dickens books from the 1960s that she bought at a garage sale. She always gave me books she bought at garage sales. And she always wrote in them, which I adore. ❤️💕

Daisey Lovely! I have so many books with similar notes from my grandma, and those books mean so much to me. 💕 5mo

Me and David Copperfield on our rainy, wintery commute. I don't know what I'll do when I've no more Dickens to read!

Libby1 Do you have a favourite? I think my favourites so far are Edwin Drood, A Christmas Carol, and Great Expectations. 6mo
Leannr @libby1 Great Expectations is my all time favourite 😍 the depth of his characters and the pure beauty of his descriptive passage take me away every time! Nicholas Nickelby is up there too, AND A Chistmas Carol 😂 6mo
Libby1 I haven‘t read Nicholas Nickelby yet. I read one Dickens book a year - usually in September. It‘s a bit of a fun tradition for me. 😊 6mo
Ericalambbrown I really like A Tale of Two Cities. Probably because it was the first of his novels that I was introduced to in the eighth grade by my grandmother. It started a lifelong love of Mr Dickens for me. I read the Claire Tomalin biography of Dickens this fall and really liked it, if you are interested. 6mo

Who knew Charles Dickens was a superstitious gent? 😆

Apparently he took heed to the superstition that the gift of a knife will sever an existing relationship unless a coin or other gift is given in return. So when he received a gift of cutlery from a manufacturing firm, he made sure to send them back a first edition of his book David Copperfield.

David Copperfield was my summer love 😍 And my big book goal. I now own only 37 books that I have not read yet and proud of it! Really sticking through getting through my own collection. Which is a lot...I don‘t really borrow. But a lot of those books are now the giant novels or collections. David Copperfield is a long one but well worth it.

My goal was to read one of my big unread novels in my bookcase. I did that but it was so much more enriching and satisfying than I expected. I have read other Dickens and enjoy his writing. But the movement of the plot despite the book‘s size, the memorability of the characters, the emotions, and its well-roundedness to the end were more than I expected. I HIGHLY recommend 😊
PS the window shadow is supposed to evoke David‘s view of Agnes 😉

Of the few Dickens stories I've read, David Copperfield is my favorite. I was drawn in from the first chapter, and the spell held all the way through the thousand pages without flagging. Looking back, it's almost like a gritty, older cousin to Anne of Green Gables. Would love to reread this someday.
