Seven Types of Ambiguity
Seven Types of Ambiguity | Elliot Perlman
'One of the 50 most important writers in the world' -- Lire (France) Is it mad to love in spite of the evidence...or just necessary? 'There is ambiguity in most human relationships. Like a sequence of words, a relationship can be open to different interpretations. And when two people have differing views, not merely of the state of their relationship, but of its very nature, it can affect the entire course of their lives.' Following years of unrequited love, an out-of-work school teacher decides to take matters into his own hands, triggering a chain of events that neither he nor his psychiatrist could have anticipated. At once a psychological thriller and a social critique, Seven Types of Ambiguity is a story of obsessive love in an age of obsessive materialism. It's a story of impulse and paralysis, of empty marriages, lovers and a small boy, gambling and the market, of adult children and their parents, of poetry and prostitution, psychiatry and the law. Brimming with emotional, intellectual and moral dilemmas, the page-turning story - reminiscent of the richest fiction of the nineteenth century in its labyrinthine complexity - unfolds at a rapid-fire pace to reveal the full extent to which these people have been affected by each other and by the insecure and uncertain times in which they live. 'Where, critics have asked, is Australia's equivalent of Jonathan Franzen's The Corrections, or Philip Roth's American Pastoral? Now, with Perlman's achingly humane, richly layered, seamlessly constructed masterpiece, it seems that we have it' -- Canberra Times

I have finally got my book group book in the mail...I now have just over a week to get through 600 pages. I'm not optimistic but so far the book is pretty good!

It might be Wednesday but I‘m going to do this one anyway because my lovely friend (& new Litten) @Rissreads tagged me.
1. My paternal grandfather who died when I was 2. He was by all accounts a lovely man. Clementine Ford. Rufus Wainwright. Germaine Greer. Tim Winton.
2. Elliot Perlman. A lynchpin for my husband and I. ❤️

AmyG I just loved this book. Are any of his other books as good? 1y

MrsMalaprop @AmyG I think this one is probably the best. I‘ve read all his books & liked them though. 1y

Great read. Or I should say listen. It took me about 4 months to finish listening to in my car but it was worth it. I need a breather for at least a week though now. Full of wise insights and curious tales. I‘d definitely give it the thumbs up. Keen to see the mini series now.

But that enigmatic calm that attaches itself to people in the presence of reason - It‘s like the smell of burned toast. You made the toast. You looked forward to it.You even enjoyed making it, but it burned. What were you doing? You open the window, but only the very top layer of the smell goes away. It‘s on the walls. You leave the room, but it‘s on your clothes. You change your clothes, but it‘s in your hair. And in the morning, it‘s still there.

This is after the dedication page in the tagged above book. Seven Types changed my life. I haven‘t revisited it in a long time but a friend of mine did and boy does it dredge up “what could‘ve been” in my mind.

❤️❤️❤️ this 2004 Australian novel. Some of the love is due to it being partly responsible for bringing my husband and I together. We even quoted from it in our wedding speeches 😍.

Must read it again someday, but worry I won‘t love it as hard and that would be devastating 😟.

Cinfhen I NEED to get to this one! Thanks for the reminder 💜 2y
BarbaraBB I loved this one so much too! It gets way too little recognition! 2y

One of my favourite Aussie authors Elliot Perlman. I was seriously an embarrassing gushing groupie and I didn't even care. I don't want rockstars I want an author who has a way with words ❤️

MrBook Awesome! 😁👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 2y

Bailedbailed

I picked this up due to the TV series that is currently airing. The book is written in the voices of different characters. The first part completely sucked me in and held me spell bound. The second part switched to the point of view of the disgruntled husband. I had zero fucks to give about this guy. So I took a leaf out of the DNF Queen's guide and bailed! Thanks @shawnmooney !

shawnmooney That's awesome! 😍 I was very disappointed by the end of this novel, and like you I thought it had started out sso great. I wish I had bailed too! 3y
Sue @shawnmooney Your 3 stars on Goodreads reassured me it wasn't going to improve! I may watch the show (Hugo Weaving can do no wrong) but maybe not (the actor who plays Joe specialises in characters I tend to give zero fucks about) 😂 3y
LeeRHarry I'm currently watching the show, never read it - you're right, Mr Weaving can do no wrong 😏 I'm enjoying it so far! 3y
Brittbritt I saw the show and was enjoying it up until the last episode which totally disappointed me 3y

Elliot Perlman is one of my favourite Australian authors and this novel has been adapted for a six part tv series with one of my favourite Australian actors (Hugo Weaving). I've read many of Perlman's other novels but for some reason this one has sat on my shelf unread for years.

AmyG Do you know when and what channel this is on? I loved this book. 3y
BookishTrish Thanks for sharing. Loved this book. My fav of his is 3y
Joanne1 @AmyG are you in Australia? If so it's on the ABC on Thursday night at 8.30 or the whole six episodes are available on iview. 3y
Joanne1 @BookishTrish yes, that's my favourite too. I also liked 3y
AmyG @Joanne1 I am in the US. I will google and find it. I'd love to watch it. Thank you! (edited) 3y

This is a photo of my husband's and my copies of Seven Types on our shelf, alongside a family pic taken some years ago. Those two goofy kids are now teens.

When we met 10 years ago my husband and I discovered a mutual love for this fairly obscure, rich and harrowing Australian novel.

Tomorrow night a mini-series based on the book premieres on ABC TV. We are a little bit excited to see it. 👍😘👏

MayJasper What a great story 😊 3y
Sue That's awesome! (And I clearly need to remedy the fact that I've never read this) 3y
Cinfhen Great story! I love the author's other book ~ Have you read 3y

LeeRHarry Looking forward to seeing it too! 3y
MrsMalaprop You bet @Cinfhen. There's a copy on the shelf in the picture 😊. We've read all his fiction. There's two copies of his book of short stories because we were both reading that when we met. 3y
MrsMalaprop Yes you do @Rachael_reads. Hope you like it 😊. 3y
Victoria_Clyne I'm a big Elliot Pearlman fan. I am planning to watch these series though i haven't read this book. . . yet. 3y
AmyG I loved this book. And thanks for the heads up on the TV series....I had no idea. 3y
Jeg Loved the book so much I kept it. Looking forward to the TV series. 3y

Anna40 Loved this book! 3y
Joanne1 So I watched the first episode last week and immediately had to watch the next two episodes on iview. I just finished the last episode a few minutes ago. How have I not managed to read this book (despite owning it for years and loving Elliot Perlman). How are you enjoying the series. 3y
MrsMalaprop @joanne1 My husband and I have watched the first 3 episodes and won't watch anymore until we're back together again next week (he's away for work then I'm away with some girlfriends for the weekend!). Otherwise I'm sure we'd have binge-watched the whole series by now 😁. Needless to say we're enjoying it so far. BUT, the book is so dense and rich that I don't think any series could really do it justice. 3y
Joanne1 @MrsMalaprop now I REALLY need to read the book. 3y

These are all #autobuyauthors for me: clockwise from top left, Elliot Perlman, Kate Atkinson, Joan London, Hannah Kent, Tim Winton, Helen Garner, and in the middle, Sarah Waters. Kate Atkinson is a new addition for me. I loved A God In Ruins and am pages away from finishing Life After Life.

I'll be very interested to see everyone else's author auto-buys. #Marchintoreading Day 24

Loved this book; have read it twice. Yes, it has shortcomings, but the story(ies) continue(s) to stick in my mind.

MrsMalaprop Me too. Did you see there is an ABC dramatisation of it to air soon? 3y
BookaholicAnon No! I had no idea. Thanks for the tip, I'll watch for it now. Same title, is it? Seems to me this might be hard to carry off in the TV medium. 3y

This is one of my favourite books of all time. It's partly responsible for my husband and I connecting in that we both discovered we'd recently read it and loved it when we met. We still have two copies sitting side by side on our book shelf 10 years later ❤💕. Rich, deep, epic and devastating. Do it!

#Recommendsday! This book solidified my wanting to be a writer. I've never experienced a writer who could make burnt toast part of beautiful expression until I read this guy.
