June Goodreads “Raising the Middlebrow Book Club” selection. I couldn‘t put it down! Initially it felt like a slow go but I ended up completely absorbed. The writing was fantastic. Tennyson Jesse talks about class, women in the workforce, wages, marital bedroom rights, abortion, the legal system and its treatment of women, fidelity, adultery, and fulfillment-in several nuances. So much to discuss!

LeahBergen I‘m looking forward to this one! 2y
Jess_Read_This @LeahBergen It was a great read and I really enjoyed Tennyson Jesse‘s writing. It was my first by her. And we are discussing the Edith Thompson case that inspired the novel. I‘ve got Delafield‘s Messalina of the Suburbs on deck next to compare which was also inspired by the Thompson case. But Pin to See the Peepshow has so much discussion worthy material! 2y
rubyslippersreads ❤️ your paper dolls. This sounds interesting. 2y

Jess_Read_This @rubyslippersreads Thank you! They came from a vintage French fashion magazine (or so the Etsy seller told me lol) They were sold as book marks but I prop them up on my bookshelf. 2y
LeahBergen I‘m even more intrigued now! And that‘s one of the Delafield‘s I‘ve yet to hunt down (and I‘m a BIG fan). 😊 2y

And some more #BritishLibraryWomenWriters book mail!

This 1934 novel is based on a notorious 1920s murder trial and follows Julia as she enters into an unfulfilling marriage and then “a passionate affair with deadly consequences”. 😮😮

#20Best2020 Thanks @Centique & @sarahbarnes for tagging me ,although I struggled both to narrow it down or choose a favourite, as well as struggling with technology but it has been a good reading yr despite the dreaded lurgy.

Thanks for the tag @Centique #favs @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks
I always struggle with favourites so i plucked 3 books immediately of my bookshelves that were 5* and i would be happy to recommend, one a little known virago, one an eye opening true story, and the other a modern classic.
I will tag 3 most recent followers who dont seem to be tagged if they want to join in @Bookish.SAM @Shaleen @Book_Fiend_Melissa

Shaleen Thanks for the tag😁 4y

#booked2020 #hatoncover
loved this bk, a fictionalised account of a true crime that shocked 1920's England . We meet julia pre ww1 as a naive teenager who lives in her imagination but with incredible self belief who, following a brief flirtation with passion, is drawn into a loveless marriage with a widowed older family friend. Immersed in julia's life the culmination is shocking, +the writer does not shy from issues of women's lives + justice.5*

ljuliel Sounds good. Those are worth big money, according to Amazon 😮. I didn‘t see your exact cover but the ones they showed were 😮 4y

readordierachel This does sound good! 4y
andrew61 @ljuliel i will have a look. I picked it up in a charity shop! 4y
andrew61 @Cathythoughts yes i was saving it up. 4y
andrew61 @youneverarrived it was really good but I'd maybe leave it until after the baby as parts of the later pages deal with things that would be better read then about back Street abortion and whilst it's ahead of its time in it's portrayal of women's rights and therefore an interesting social picture. Otherwise id really recommend it. 4y
