The Glitch: A Novel | Elisabeth Cohen
17 posts | 18 read | 32 to read
A fast, funny, deeply hilarious debut--The Glitch is the story of a high-profile, TED-talking, power-posing Silicon Valley CEO and mother of two who has it all under control, until a woman claiming to be a younger version of herself appears, causing a major glitch in her over-scheduled, over-staffed, over-worked life. Shelley Stone might be a little overwhelmed. She runs the company Conch, the manufacturer of a small wearable device that attaches to the user's ear and whispers helpful advice and prompts. She's married with two small children, Nova and Blazer, both of whom are learning Mandarin. She employs a cook, a nanny, a driver, and an assistant, she sets an alarm for 2AM conference calls, and occasionally takes a standing nap while waiting in line when she's really exhausted. Shelley takes Dramamine so she can work in the car; allows herself ten almonds when hungry; swallows Ativan to stave off the panic attacks; and makes notes in her day planner to "practice being happy and relatable." But when Shelley meets a young woman named Shelley Stone who has the exact same scar on her shoulder, Shelley has to wonder: Is some sort of corporate espionage afoot? Has she discovered a hole in the space-time continuum? Or is she finally buckling under all the pressure? Introducing one of the most memorable and singular characters in recent fiction, The Glitch is a completely original, brainy, laugh-out-loud story of work, marriage, and motherhood for our times.

Mehso-so

This mix of women's lives and relationships with sci-fi didn't quite work for me. I was much more interested in the comedic portrayal of a Silicon Valley workaholic than the tech-gone-wrong storyline.

The story of a strong woman in the tech industry. But then something goes wrong with her and the product. It wanted to be women‘s fiction then sci-fi then back to women‘s...I couldn‘t keep up. Just okay.

On a weekend getaway in NH, checking out the local bookstore. I love that they promote books with simple, handwritten quotes. I‘m not usually one for “missing children” plots but this one got me good! 😂

“Like a lot of successful people, I have problems with my sinuses. I was digging in my bag for tissues when I felt my phone buzzing. It was work. And so between the call and my nose, I didn‘t notice our child had gone missing.”

2BR02B 😂😂 Did you end up buying it? 6y
monalyisha @2BR02B I added it to my Goodreads TBR so I can borrow it from the library — like a jerk. 😅In my defense, I try not to buy hardcovers (they‘re expensive & cumbersome), & I‘d already bought 5,000,000 things for the #WitchPleaseSwap (which I need to stop doing! But it‘s so fun!). 6y
Judybskt I love checking out local bookstores when I‘m away. I did the same thing this weekend when I was in Pittsburgh. 6y

2BR02B @monalyisha just wondering because @AmyG sent me a copy that I'd like to pass along after I've finished reading it. Maybe it could make the rounds of the Litsy community, a traveling tome! 😁 6y
monalyisha @2BR02B I‘d be down to read it & pass it on at some point! No rush (I‘m sure your TBR looks much like mine 😅). Lemme know if you decide to do it! 👍🏻 6y
AmyG I love when books get passed around the Litsy community! ❤️ 6y

I wasn't initially sure I would like this book about a laser-focused Silicon Valley executive named Shelly Stone. Luckily, just when I was sure Shelly couldn't pass a Turing test, something happens to crack her facade: she meets a young woman who reminds her of her younger self--who may even be her younger self. Original, witty, and sometimes hilarious, The Glitch is one of the best books I've read this year.

Fun summer read about an incredibly over-regimented 39 year old woman who thinks she is in complete control of her life when in reality, she only thinks she‘s got a handle on everything, including herself. Some very funny and entertaining writing!

AmyG I just read this. Good read yet odd premise. 6y
KikiLovesBooks It was almost too clever sometimes. I liked the way she never “knew” she was actually crying. Until the end. 6y

Finally back to reading. This book is a strange one. A woman, head of a tech company, finds that their product (a device you fit behind your ear that speaks to you) isn‘t quite working as planned. Add a few other crazy plotlines...and you‘re off. I‘m enjoying this book as I can‘t imagine where this story leads.

Bklover Good morning!! Am so happy you are in your new home (even without the view in the other pic). Moving is just awful! Wanted to know how Hilly is! 6y
AmyG @Bklover Thank you so much for kind thoughts! Hilly is good. A little needy, but she seems happy. What an exhausting endeavor but it‘s all behind us. 6y
Bklover Am so glad! I think we all get a little needy after a big move. Enjoy!❤️ 6y

Honestly, I almost bailed several times. I had this one on kindle and audiobook and Cassandra Campbell narrates, which usually gets me through any book. And her voice is perfect for the annoying Shelley Stone. But it took sooooooo long to get on with the story and I switched to ebook where I could skim like crazy. Glad I did. The twist, as others mentioned, was obvious and the ending disappointing.

In VT for the weekend (while there is a tag sale at my home). My husband is doing a bike ride for charity which means I get to read while I wait for him to finish. Win/win

JHSiess A tag sale? Not familiar with that concept. 6y
AmyG @JHSiess We sold our house...and are selling most of our furniture etc. A woman comes in and organizes a sale of all our “stuff”. It‘s best to clear out rather than watch strange people in your home buying your things. 😳 6y
Andrea4 @AmyG that sounds intense and difficult. Hope you have a good weekend away! 6y

JHSiess Ah . . . around here those are called estate sales. "Garage sales" are when you sell it yourself. Hope the sale & move go well. ? 6y
AmyG @JHSiess it‘s the same as an estate sale. I feel funny saying that as we do not have an estate. 😂 @Andrea4 It‘s a bit stressful but almost over Thank you! You have a good weekend, too. 6y
Suet624 I always thought estate sales were when someone had died and you needed to empty their house. 6y
AmyG @Suet624 While we are still very much alive....we needed to empty alot of our house as we are moving to a small, already furnished apartment. 6y
Suet624 Yup. I know. I was just commenting on the difference between estate, garage, and tag sales. 😁 6y
AmyG @Suet624 AH. A garage sale is do it yourself. I always thought tag and estate sales were the same. Funny story...our son‘s fiancee had made this vase in college (where they met). It was so hideous they didn‘t want it. Some fool bought it for $25. Go figure! 6y
Suet624 Wow! 6y

So, first, this is not a chick lit novel. Second, and spoiler alert, it is not a sci-fi novel. It is some weird hodgepodge of a novel that didn‘t seem to know what it wanted to be. The premise is so intriguing, but the execution was lacking. The twist was something I saw eight away and then spent most of the boom wondering why she hadn‘t even considered it. And I did not appreciate the ending.

A fun summer read about a type A CEO of a tech company, who's tackling work, motherhood, relationships, and a potential melt down. It's funny, poignant, witty, and well written.
