Two young daredevil flyers confront ugly truths and family secrets during the U.S. internment of Japanese citizens during World War II, from the author of The Other Typist and Three-Martini Lunch. Louis Thorn and Haruto "Harry" Yamada -- the Eagle and the Crane -- are the star attractions of Earl Shaw's Flying Circus, a daredevil (and not exactly legal) flying act that traverses Depression-era California. The young men have a complicated relationship, thanks to the Thorn family's belief that the Yamadas -- Japanese immigrants -- stole land that should have stayed in the Thorn family. When Louis and Harry become aerial stuntmen, performing death-defying tricks high above audiences, they're both drawn to Shaw's smart and appealing stepdaughter, Ava Brooks. When the Japanese bomb Pearl Harbor and one of Shaw's planes mysteriously crashes and two charred bodies are discovered in it, authorities conclude that the victims were Harry and his father, Kenichi, who had escaped from a Japanese internment camp they had been sent to by the federal government. To the local sheriff, the situation is open and shut. But to the lone FBI agent assigned to the case, the details don't add up. Thus begins an investigation into what really happened to cause the plane crash, who was in the plane when it fell from the sky, and why no one involved seems willing to tell the truth. By turns an absorbing mystery and a fascinating exploration of race, family and loyalty, Eagle and Crane is that rare novel that tells a gripping story as it explores a terrible era of American history.

When Kenichi and Haruto Yamada escape from a Japanese internment camp during WWII, an FBI agent is sent to investigate. What unfolds is a story of a family grudge, an unlikely friendship, and a daredevil barnstorming act. I loved the structure of the story that digs into the history of two families and moves forward as the historical present day investigation works back to meet up with a satisfying resolution to the mystery. My November #bookspin

I took the day off thinking (that I needed a day off...) that I would help my mom with the prep for Thanksgiving dinner. Alas, we axed Thanksgiving dinner, so now I am doing this and hoping it proves distracting enough to keep me from obsessively checking my work email on a day I‘m not working. Work life balance, I have it. #hahanope

I love Suzanne Rindell, a must read author for me, BUT this doesn‘t stack up to her first two books. I liked the setting, the story, and the inspiration. On the flip side, it felt like the action could have started sooner—the pacing was off. The characters didn‘t come alive for me. I used this one for #soldierstory for #booked2019 because WWII was an integral part of the book and one of the MC‘s brothers enlisted, which was the catalyst for ⬇️

Reviewsbylola much of the action at the end of the book. 4y
Cinfhen I don‘t think I ever read this author before 🤷🏼‍♀️ 4y

WWII love triangle. The escape of two Japanese prisoners from an internment camp brings an FBI agent to town. Soon after, they're found dead from a plane crash in which they were thought to be fleeing. As the agent seeks answers he begins to unravel the story of two young men, two planes, and the woman who ties them all together. Fulfilled multiple challenges with this one.

I absolutely loved Rindell‘s first two books, so I pre ordered this one. The picture is of Rindell‘s grandfather Norbert, who is the inspiration behind the book. As an aviator during WWII, he often told stories of some of the crazy stunts he saw, including “wing walkers”.

In #Eagle & Crane, two men travel around California during the Depression putting on illegal aviation shows. The novel is about their flying circus. #abbainaugust

emilyhaldi Oh! I didn't realize this was same author as 🍸🍸🍸 fun! 6y
Mdargusch Interesting premise. I haven‘t read this author yet. 6y

I forgot to post my #bookmail from the other day. I pre ordered this as soon as I finished Three Martini Lunch. That and The Other Typist we‘re both so fantastic that Rindell instantly became a must-read author for me! #bookdepository
