Book Shops: How to Run Them | Ruth Brown Park

I am thinking about starting a Pop-Up Book shop. Not for a source of income, but more for fun and because I love books and my town doesn't have a bookstore and I want people to have a place to buy books every now and then.

My question... how much would you pay for a used book at a Pop-up? I was thinking $5 for adult books and $1 for kids but my husband thinks $5 might be too high. What do you think?? Thank you for any advice you can give!!

Scochrane26 Half-price books usually charges $5-6 for a book, sometimes more or less, depending on condition, how many copies they have, & size. 3y

Soubhiville For newer releases I‘ll often pay half the cover price if it‘s in really good condition. (That‘s how most of Half Price Books is priced.) At charity shops usually $2-$4, but the books are often in worse shape. 3y

I‘m in Sydney as a sort of birthday treat - and I finally got to go to Abbey‘s bookshop 😍 I mostly spent time in Galaxy Books - the upstairs part that focuses on sci fi and fantasy...

thegirlwiththelibrarybag @CarolynM, I won an IG competition and the prize was a $30 Galaxy books voucher... so I had a to *buy* books 😋🤩 I was quite impressed with their range - gorgeous mix of new and older titles 4y

CarolynM Sci-Fi and Fantasy are not really my thing, but on the odd occasion I've wanted something in that line they've always had it at Galaxy (including a quite obscure title one time). They have an amazing range of books downstairs with fairly limited floor space. 4y

thegirlwiththelibrarybag @CarolynM, I was very much at home in Galaxy - I loved their paranormal romance section - there were authors I haven‘t thought about/seen in ages. I had a good browse downstairs too 4y

Reviewsbylola Same! So far my kids do prefer real books but I do facilitate reading on their tablets too. As long as they‘re readers though, that‘s all I can ask for! The gratification of buying real books though, at least for me, is way better than buying an ebook. ☺️ @Djspens 5y

Weaponxgirl Lol. I was once walking with a group of people to the pub in the day and knew a bookshop was coming up. So I deliberately started walking slower than the group and boom snuck in that bookshop when no one was looking! 5y

LauraBeth I was reading The Curious Charms Of Arthur Pepper during downtime at the hospital when I was visiting my mom. I always thought she was asleep when I pulled it out and then one day she looked at me and asked, “Are you EVER going to finish that book? You‘ve been carrying it in here day in and day out!” 😂 6y
