To Die but Once
To Die but Once: A Maisie Dobbs Novel | Jacqueline Winspear
26 posts | 26 read | 1 reading | 7 to read
Maisie Dobbs"a female investigator every bit as brainy and battle-hardened as Lisbeth Salander" (Maureen Corrigan, NPRs Fresh Air), faces danger and intrigue on the home front during World War II in this poignant entry (#14) in Jacqueline Winspears New York Times bestselling series"a series that seems to get better with every entry" (Tom Holland, Wall Street Journal). Spring 1940. With Britons facing what has become known as "the Bore War"nothing much seems to have happened yetMaisie Dobbs is asked to investigate the disappearance of a local lad, a young apprentice craftsman working on a "hush-hush" government contract. As Maisies inquiry reveals a possible link to the London underworld, another mother is worried about a missing sonbut this time the boy in question is one beloved by Maisie. As USA Today \s Robert Bianco says, "with clarity and economy, Winspear lays the historical groundwork. . . . The setting matters, but what may matter more is the lovely, sometimes poetic way Winspear pushes her heroine forward. . . . May she shine on the literary scene for many books to come."

Another Maisie Dobbs book, this time set during the excavation of Dunkirk during WWII. It is an easy read and enjoyable.

MrsK I haven‘t read any of this series yet. Can you jump in anywhere, or star at the beginning? 2y
emmaturi I suppose you could start anywhere, but it is best to start at the beginning as the lives of the characters their stories continue all the time. @MrsKinvestigates 2y

Maisie Dobbs is investigating again as France falls during WWII. She is very much on the home front, dealing with all that entails. Missing young men and their ideas of heroism invade this book. Entertaining to read and hard to put down once it ended.

I‘m on a bit of a Winspear binge as I catch up to the end of the series so far. Well written as always this one had a lacing of sadness all the way thru. Young Joe Coombs is dead. It looks like a drunken accident, but was it staged? Maisie‘s heart is tugged.

Took a break from book organizing to walk. #litsywalkers Six blocks this time! Sunshine and 56F. Visited the two little free libraries nearest the house and traded for this one.

DarcysMom Wow! You are so lucky to have two little free libraries so close to you! 5y

The human cost of war is brought home in this novel, as Maisie watches her friends grapple with the reality of their children joining the war effort. Another solid read in the Maisie Dobbs series.

JazzFeathers I always think about that generation who went through two World Wars. I'm a Tolkien fan, and he belongs to that generation. He fought in WWI and saw his sons off to WWII. It must have been tough. 5y
Louise @JazzFeathers Yes, it‘s mind-boggling, isn‘t it! My Oma in Germany was a child during WWI and the mother of 6 children during WWII. Those were some tough times. (edited) 5y

I‘m so sad that I‘ve caught up with series and now have to wait for the next one.😢 Heart wrenching and full of mystery, full of the trials of war that everyday people in London endured. 💜💜💜

CoverToCoverGirl It‘s always great when you discover an author and they have a lot of books.. it‘s like yay! But then in short order you‘re like oh no! I‘m all caught up and now I have to wait ( impatiently 😔) for the next one! 5y
Booknerd2 @CoverToCoverGirl I know right!!! You want to savor and enjoy but also devour. I was the same way with Louise Penny‘s Three Pine series!! 5y

I'm so sad to get to book 14, because now I have to wait for the next one! I binge-listened to the entire series and really enjoyed it, but now I feel like I have said goodbye to an old friend. I'll have to patiently wait for our next visit.

Andrew65 Wow! You‘ve massively overtaken me! Need to get back to Maisie. That wait is excruciating when you are current on a series. 6y
Lmstraubie @Andrew65 I saw your other comment first. Yes, I got a bit carried away. I just love how this series combines historical fiction and mystery. These are two of my favorite genres. I also love the narrator. 6y
Booknerd2 I feel exactly the same way right now. 😢 5y

Great addition to the Maisie Dobbs series! Loved how this book really got back to Maisie‘s roots as a small business investigator. Where what seems to be an easy missing person case turns in to something much bigger than expected! Loved the tie ins to what‘s going on during the first part of WWII. Love love love this series!!!

MallenNC I'm listening to the first in the series now. I've read some of the later ones so it is fun to hear how it started. 6y

This seemed to take Maisie back to her roots: small investigation that turns into something more profound. But now as Maisie's gotten older the stakes are higher and the risks she once took are weighed more heavily. There was an interesting tie-in to Dunkirk in this. Always fun to see an event that historically has an impact at its beginning before the world immortalizes it.

KarmonR The first book of the series is near the top of me TBR list. 6y

I was on the road a lot this past week and Maisie kept me company all the way. Orlagh Cassidy does a superb job of narrating the Maisie Dobbs stories. Almost caught up with the series and looking forward to the next book.

Tadams4 I love those books! 6y

Once again, the series gives a fascinating view of WWII from an everyday civilian viewpoint intertwined with an interesting case that‘s relevant to the time period. Maisie Dobbs is an engaging self made main character whose smart and overcome a lot of adversity. And Dunkirk, the movie, was one of the few films I saw this year, so the perspective of the waiting civilians was especially poignant. I‘m already looking forward to the next installment.

I wasn‘t planning on indulging in back to back series, let alone two of my favorites- the Louise Penny books & now the newest release from the Maisie Dobbs series. These are very different novels but both offer a depth that isn‘t always found in mysteries. I have enjoyed all the ways her character has developed & changed as she has aged through the books. Great historical mystery series to try if you like smart female characters set in WW2.

Maisie Dobbs is one of my favorite detectives. I listened to this one and really enjoyed it, but I did feel there was something missing (I‘ll post a spoiler in the comments). I do still love this series though!

I don't know if it's me, the book, or a bit of both, but this was my least favorite Maisie Dobbs book. It took me weeks to read, and neither the mystery nor her personal storylines were particularly enjoyable or satsifying.

Andrew65 @josteele I love the Maisie Dobbs Series, great to have a strong female lead in the 1920s and 30s. This is the first one, which is a great introduction to the character. 6y
