The Strange and Deadly Portraits of Bryony Gray
The Strange and Deadly Portraits of Bryony Gray | E. Latimer
15 posts | 3 read | 33 to read
Lemony Snicket meets Oscar Wilde meets Edgar Allan Poe in this exciting and scary middle-grade novel inspired by The Picture of Dorian Gray -- a family curse is unleashed! Bryony Gray is becoming famous as a painter in London art circles. But life isn't so grand. Her uncle keeps her locked in the attic, forcing her to paint for his rich clients . . . and now her paintings are taking on a life of their own, and customers are going missing under mysterious circumstances. When her newest painting escapes the canvas and rampages through the streets of London, Bryony digs into her family history, discovering some rather scandalous secrets her uncle has been keeping, including a deadly curse she's inherited from her missing father. Bryony has accidentally unleashed the Gray family curse, and it's spreading fast. With a little help from the strange-but-beautiful girl next door and her paranoid brother, Bryony sets out to break the curse, dodging bloodthirsty paintings, angry mobs and her wicked uncle along the way.

Despite their artistic brilliance and unique qualities, Bryony‘s portraits are too dangerous to hang in a #Museum!

While I had greatly anticipated this book I was surprised to find that it out shown so many great reads this month. I honestly had expected my favorite read of March to be Burn Bright by Patricia Briggs! It was a near thing, but E. Latimer edged out one of my absolute favorite authors this time by a tiny bit. IDK, maybe it‘s because I had been craving a bit of horror lately. It certainly delivered that! Either way, Latimer FTW!

This is beautifully written! You can really see the author‘s love of literature throughout the book. Riddled with chilling scenes from the prologue on, this will keep you on the edge of your seat and cheering for our three young protagonists, start to finish. This story has carved out a spot amongst my favorite YA novels.📚💕

KrystleTheBookSlayer When I read that, I was wondering if this was a book about hobbits! 😂😂😂 6y
the.bookish.valkyrie @KrystleTheBookSlayer 😂No, though I wouldn‘t be shocked if it was a deliberate nod to Tolkien! There are fun little gems like this that reference classics throughout, and this book is definitely inspired by (edited) 6y
