The Lifeboat
The Lifeboat: A Novel | Charlotte Rogan
20 posts | 47 read | 23 to read
Grace Winter, 22, is both a newlywed and a widow. She is also on trial for her life. In the summer of 1914, the elegant ocean liner carrying her and her husband Henry across the Atlantic suffers a mysterious explosion. Setting aside his own safety, Henry secures Grace a place in a lifeboat, which the survivors quickly realize is over capacity. For any to live, some must die. As the castaways battle the elements, and each other, Grace recollects the unorthodox way she and Henry met, and the new life of privilege she thought she'd found. Will she pay any price to keep it? The Lifeboat is a page-turning novel of hard choices and survival, narrated by a woman as unforgettable and complex as the events she describes.

At the beginning of WWI, a luxury liner catches fire depositing a random group of people in an overcrowded lifeboat with a ship‘s officer. They story is narrated by one of the survivors, Grace. I felt at times like I was in that boat. Moral dilemmas ensue as does a trial.

Another friend recommended read. This one is a slow build and never really has a big reveal, but it deals with the consequences of choices and how simple interactions in life can change the whole course of one's life.

I ended up enjoying it more than I thought I would.

Crazeedi This one sound interesting 4y

Your worst nightmare comes true - your ship goes down, and to survive, you‘re now on a lifeboat with a bunch of other shivering survivors. But, it gets worse. The lifeboat isn‘t stable, and you need to lose weight from it. What do you do?

I really liked this book, though it‘s not for everyone. It‘s psychological and really gets into the survival mindset. Plus, the characters are loathsome. #Barracuda #MarchIntoThe70s

Judybskt I loved this book as well! I had found a used copy in a store when we were on vacation a few years ago. Otherwise I would have never bought it. 5y
Tamra Funny, because I pose this question to my ethics class every semester. 😮 5y
Cinfhen We read this for bookclub. Even though most did not like the book, it made for excellent discussion 5y
sk888888 I was hoping they would all perish! Rarely do I hate a book, but I really hated this one. 5y

I‘m sure the characters in this book thought at first #whydidithavetobeme in this situation, being trapped on a sinking lifeboat brings up survival instincts. I loved this psychological thriller - it‘s dark, so not for everyone, and you leave the book loathing the characters. #ABBAinAugust

Andrew65 Sounds interesting! 6y
Librarybelle @Andrew65 I think it is! You either really love it or really hate it. It makes you really think about choices and what ifs and survival. 6y

I finished this yesterday - went into school (remember how teachers have summer off? 🙄) to print some things & rearrange my new classroom so I read the thing on audio. I've been thinking how I would rate it & if I would recommend it since. The MC was unreliable - but hard to tell if dumb or deliberate. The time on the boat was weird - I think in the end, the author carefully crafted this one even if I didn't like it for myself as a reader.

heikemarie Bonus cute bug pic because I found him on my car yesterday and I read the book yesterday ☺️ (edited) 7y

This was a difficult one to rate. It was good in the way that the lifeboat was a microcosm of humanity and the strong desire to live. I hated the MC though: she was obviously a psychopath. Rating: 3.5/5.

Most people I know who read this did not like it; I, however, did. It's really a psychological study - what would you do if you were on a lifeboat with a bunch of strangers, and someone had to go overboard in order for the others to live? The narrator is also extremely unreliable, so there are questions left unanswered. But, in this particular book, it works for me. #mandown #JuneTunz

Cinfhen I liked this one too, but most members of my book club were not fans! 7y
Librarybelle @Cinfhen This was a contender for my library system's One Book program a couple years ago. Most of the committee didn't like it, some not even finishing it. I, on the other hand, read it quickly and liked it. Nice to see we had similar experiences! 7y

Awesome turnout today for the latest installment of the Connecticut Authors Reading Series, an event I curate every other month at Cyrenius H. Booth Library. Thanks to our authors Charlotte Rogan (THE LIFEBOAT and NOW AND THEN), essayist James M. Chesbro, and Rachel Basch (THE LISTENER). Especially grateful to our attendees who participated in a great discussion covering topics including setting, voice, and truth in creative nonfiction.

Mehso-so

I think I would categorize this book as a 3.5 star one! It was very interesting, and it definitely made me think of what I would do in such a situation. It also made me kind of hate most of humanity. 😐

But I felt like it lacked closure? Like, I wanted more of a conclusion. We spent so much time talking about the lifeboat, but then the rescue we have all been waiting for (and knew would happen) only took like half a page...

I felt like the book had the potential to be great. The premise of too many in the boat was thought provoking one but then add murder into the mix was a bit much.
