I am now allowed to announce the three finalists for the 2018 Jacques Brossard Prize.

The nominees are (in no particular order) Pascal Raud, Philippe Meilleur, and Karoline Georges, for the entirety of their respective science-fiction, fantasy, fantastique and horror publications in 2017.

The winner will be announced on May 4th at the Congrès Boréal in Montréal.

Here on time for the Jacques Brossard Prize jury meeting. Third one there. By the by, La Grande Bibliothèque in Montréal is one of the best in North America. I'm not the only one to think so.

Ok, that's it. I won't be able to read any more. My brain is dead and my sick-ass day is done. I did my best, but there is not way I'll be able to read the few remaining books, though TBH, the style of the first five pages of them (I did look) tells me I am not missing much. The jury meets in Montréal tomorrow. And now, I'm going to sleep until dinner.
ETA: For those wondering, not reading all the books is common; many people cover more ground.

I am so effing tired of reading for the Jacques Brossard Prize, I have no words. Not that the texts are bad, far from it, but I'm tired of not having a choice of what I'm reading and even more tired of not being allowed to talk about it. Keeping mum is the hardest. 😞

Still reading for the Jacques Brossard Prize. The novel is getting from cute thing written by a young writer with potential to being simply badly written. She has potential, but she needs an editor. Or more experience. I hope she can't be identified from this pic, but this is getting ridiculous.
"'Agreed', Muna approved." FFS!!!!! I think I'm gonna DNF.

This book is still cute, but it's also sounding like it was written by an author in her twenties. No offence to the twenty-somethings reading this, but no 40-yo would ever sound like that. It's still better than many others on the pile.

CouronneDhiver Ha! Yep. I‘m only in my 30s and I can totally relate. 6y
tournevis @CouronneDhiver It's fine and all. Most writers do it at first, me included, but an editor should not in their 20s should have seen this long before it went to press. 6y

Hey, folks! I wrote stuff! I actually wrote actual words this afternoon! I am officially better! Ok, I only wrote 525 words. But those are 525 words more than in the last six months.

I also read more of the not-quite-fantasy novel I started yesterday. It's still cute and restfully writter so far.

The novel I'm reading now for the prize, categorized as fantastic, reads so far as fantasy, though it's also rings of far future sf where science has disguised itself as the supernatural. It's cute, but it's yet another one where maternity and pregnancy are filled with mysteries, danger and weirdness. There are other things that women can do than have babies that'll save the world. At least it's not anger inducing.

Third book I started for the Jacques Brossard Prize, I DNF. Read the first of four parts, but was just getting angry. It was so badly written, I can't believe it was published. It was facile and needlessly violent. And, it was wrongly categorized. It's not SF, whatever that was.

About to start another, this one is supposed to be fantastic/supernatural. We'll see.

Finished the book. Enjoyed it, even with the weird ending. Started another novel, this time supposed to be SF. The first chapter is set in the early 1990s (because BMXs and Gameboys are present) and is told in the voice of a child in second grade. ⬇️

Pictured is the newest member of our little family, Madame Blanchette.

tournevis ➡️ Except the author is obviously not capable of writing a believable second-grader. I'm not saying this (only) because I have one at home. Seven year olds do think what he writes, but they don't talk that way. It's still early. Things might change. *crossing fingers* 6y

Still not done with the current book for the prize. Too many other things going on and the book is slow going. It's Congolese slow. I don't say this to be racist: there is a rhythm that is typically sub-Saharan and this is it. The same story written by a North American would be done by now. I'm still enjoying it very much, but I am certain the other jurors will table it.

So far in this book, there's been a river drowning, water snakes and fishmen. Let's just say I won't be surprised when Mami Wata shows up. All good, but not really fantastical. #sffq

Prix Jacques Brossard : this novel is interesting, though I think it's been mislabled. So far, all the 'fantastical' elements are simply animistic elements, part of Congolese culture, i.e. religious elements. To call them fantastical is more than a bit colonialist and racist. Anywho, the book itself is very good.

Pupper: he is on the mend, but still slow. The anti-emetic is working and he is eating some, though I have to remind him to drink.

britt_brooke Glad he‘s starting to feel better! 6y

Bostonmomx2 Did he get the dog flu that‘s hitting pretty hard this year? Sounds awful. I‘m glad he‘s getting better. 6y
tournevis @Bostonmomx2 No, he didn't. No coughing, sneezing or fever. Bloodwork was negative. Probably the combination of a stomach bug and a soft tissue injury in his back left leg, the arthritic one. 6y
Bostonmomx2 Oh that‘s good. I‘ve seen some really awful videos of the dog flu, it‘s awful. Again...glad he‘s on the mend 😀 6y
tournevis @Bostonmomx2 It's a bad dog flu, this one. It's never a good flu, but his one is yeah. My sister's dog Shisha caught one years ago and it took 6 months for her lungs to fully clear out. 6y

Jacques Brossard Prize : the novellas are done. Ouf! Now, a shorter novel by a well-established author of Congolese origin. Looking foreward to it.

Dog: he is much better. Ate and drank this morning, had a normal bowel mouvement and urinated too. Seems in good spirit, but a bit slow.

On the pupper front, back from the vet. Blood tests and hydration, plus an anti-emetic just in case. He was super hyper for about 15 minutes, drank and ate for the first time today, but the adrenalin just crashed. Hard.

On the book front, that two novella book is only making me angry by now, and you certainly have guessed that it will not be on my long list.

That was painful. First of the two novellas in this book is not even sff. The most interesting character is the little girl we only see in the male pedophile's flashback. I mean, come on! On to the second novella. (Not the tagged book. That one's great)

The worse thing about reading books for a book prize is that you have to finish them, not throw them to the wall in a fit of disgust. Jacques Brossard would be spinning in his grave.

This year, I am serving again on the jury for the Prix Jacques-Brossard, Canada's top French-language SFF literary prize. This is 4/5 of the 2017 nominee pile. I'll get through it in time. The prize is named after the author of the tagged epically epic epic cycle.
