Barking to the Choir
Barking to the Choir: The Power of Radical Kinship | Gregory Boyle
9 posts | 9 read | 13 to read
In a moving example of unconditional love in difficult times, the Jesuit priest and bestselling author of Tattoos on the Heart, Gregory Boyle, shares what three decades of working with gang members in Los Angeles has taught him about faith, compassion, and the enduring power of kinship. In his first book, Tattoos on the Heart: The Power of Boundless Compassion, Gregory Boyle introduced us to Homeboy Industries, the largest gang-intervention program in the world. Critics hailed that book as an astounding literary and spiritual feat (Publishers Weekly) that is destined to become a classic of both urban reportage and contemporary spirituality (Los Angeles Times). Now, after the successful expansion of Homeboy Industries, Boyle returns with Barking to the Choir to reveal how compassion is transforming the lives of gang members. In a nation deeply divided and plagued by poverty and violence, Barking to the Choir offers a snapshot into the challenges and joys of life on the margins. Sergio, arrested at nine, in a gang by twelve, and serving time shortly thereafter, now works with the substance-abuse team at Homeboy to help others find sobriety. Jamal, abandoned by his family when he tried to attend school at age seven, gradually finds forgiveness for his schizophrenic mother. New father Cuco, who never knew his own dad, thinks of a daily adventure on which to take his four-year-old son. These former gang members uplift the soul and reveal how bright life can be when filled with unconditional love and kindness. This book is guaranteed to shake up our ideas about God and about people with a glimpse at a world defined by more compassion and fewer barriers. Gently and humorously, Barking to the Choir invites us to find kinship with one another and reconvinces us all of our own goodness.

Ann Patchett is such a favorite of mine! If she says, read this! ➡️ I am adding to my tbr. She is also inspiring me to read Eudora Welty.

Nutmegnc To my horror, I‘ve found I‘ve read nothing by this author. (Please don‘t take this as a personal failing 😱). I love her personal story and obviously the Pulitzer Prize committee (as well as millions of people everywhere) agrees with you about her talent. Which book should I start with? And when are we going on a field trip to Parnassus books?? 2y
Ruthiella You could even order it from her bookstore...😉 2y
BkClubCare @Nutmegnc - there is no shame in not having read any particular author YET. I am sure there are a few authors you love that I have yet to experience. 2y

BkClubCare @Nutmegnc - I think I fell for her at Commonwealth but it‘s her essays that inspire me. The Story of a Happy Marriage was a great read for me. 2y
Nutmegnc @BkClubCare I‘ll see if I can get it on Libby! Thanks for the rec. 2y
BkClubCare @Nutmegnc - if you like Tom Hanks, he narrates The Dutch House. 2y
bthegood I have not read anything by her either - putting Commonwealth on my TBR - thank you 🙂 2y

See my review of Tattoos on the Heart. This book had more flow than his other book. This book was more thematic. Both are powerful books.

I had the honor of briefly meeting Father Greg Boyle at a conference once a few years ago. He was one of the best public speakers I‘ve ever seen. Truly inspirational. His gifts as a speaker don‘t necessarily translate into gifts as a writer.

It should be noted that there are likely few people on earth who are as genuine in their faith and true in their humility as he is. And those are lessons that even an atheist like me could stand to learn.

jhod I visited Father Greg in LA in 2013 after he had been to visit me and my organisation in London a few months previously - a truly inspirational man 6y
Knightingale @jhod may I ask what organization in London? 6y
jhod I was working for jobcentre plus at the time which is the UK government's employment service - we'd set up an initiative working with young people effected by gangs trying to help them to go back to college or find work - father Greg came and talked to them and their parents as well as local community leaders - really great day! And visiting Homeboy in L.A. was fabulous! 6y
Knightingale @jhod that‘s awesome. Thanks for doing what you do! 6y
