The Wolf Border
The Wolf Border | Sarah Hall
From the award-winning author of The Electric Michelangelo, one of the most decorated young British writers working today, comes a literary masterpiece: a breathtaking work that beautifully and provocatively surveys the frontiers of the human spirit and our animal drives. For almost a decade, zoologist Rachel Caine has lived a solitary existence far from her estranged family in England, monitoring wolves in a remote section of Idaho as part of a wildlife recovery program. But a surprising phone call takes her back to the peat and wet light of the Lake District where she grew up. The eccentric Earl of Annerdale has a controversial scheme to reintroduce the Grey Wolf to the English countryside, and he wants Rachel to spearhead the project. Though shes skeptical, the earls lands are close to the village where she grew up, and where her aging mother now lives. While the earls plan harks back to an ancient idyll of untamed British wilderness, Rachel must contend with modern-day realitieshealth and safety issues, public anger and fear, cynical political interests. But the return of the Grey unexpectedly sparks her own regeneration. Exploring the fundamental nature of wilderness and wildness, The Wolf Border illuminates both our animal nature and humanity: sex, love, conflict, and the desire to find answers to the question of our existencethe emotions, desires, and needs that rule our lives.

Rachel is a wolf researcher who is offered an unusual project to run in her home county of Cumbria. This book follows both her professional choices and projects but also offers a quiet character study of Rachel alongside some lovely nature writing. I really enjoyed this, as did my own little “wolves” (only one pictured).

This novel covers a lot of different ground in a quiet and contemplative way. It was oddly soothing, even when stressful things were happening in the story. Loved the writing, and the audio narration was superb.

rockpools I agree. She‘s hopped onto my ‘authors I need to read more of‘ list 4y
Cathythoughts I have this one .... must read soon 👍🏻❤️ 4y

Struggling to review this one! Particularly on audio, it‘s a quiet read, despite the huge themes it tackles - family, power, politics, addiction, love - and yet it really was gripping.

Rachel Caine, working on wolf projects in Idaho & long distant from her family, receives an unexpected offer - to reintroduce grey wolves to a large private estate in Cumbria, her home territory. Despite her better judgement, she drifts into a new start.

Cathythoughts Can‘t wait to read it ... ♥️👍🏻 5y
Lindy ❤️This was a 5-star read for me. 😊 5y
julesG My mind just went: Rachel Caine is from Cumbria, why the US spelling then, oh, that's the name of the protagonist. *slaps forehead* 5y

rockpools @Lindy I agree! Looking forward to discovering what else she‘s written now 😊 5y
rockpools @julesG 🙃 Exactly the sort of thing I‘d do! That sounds really fun though. Worth reading? 5y
julesG I quite enjoyed the series. It's a fast read and the audiobook is also very good. Mind you, it's a 5 book series with the last book coming next year. (we all thought this year's fourth book was the last, but Ms Caine ended on a cliffhanger) 5y

I‘m still sitting with this one - I‘ll write a review of it at some point (short version: it‘s great). Meanwhile, for #AnglophileApril, Rachel Cane is not one to say I‘ll #LetYouLoveMe. But, by the end of this very quiet book, she has actual relationships with real-life human beings, a family, even. Plus wolves. And told with a smidgeon of alternative history, which is still very ‘live‘.

Cathythoughts I‘m looking forward to reading this one. Loved her short story Mrs Fox 👍🏻♥️ 5y
rockpools @Cathythoughts She‘s a really interesting writer! I‘ll look out for her short stories. 5y

I read The Wolf Border after
Madame Zero. There is the same edginess: a quality I‘ve come to love this year reading Deborah Levy & Rachel Cusk. I first read about wolves in White Fang when I was little: the starving wolves chasing the 2 men and the dog team, the dogs getting eaten one by one. I was glad to learn different, wonderful things about wolves! The scenes of weather, hills and water are vivid, the human stories develop absorbingly.

A decent #litsywalkers walk this morning, but boy, was it windy!?! The ferry isn‘t running today because of high winds, it wasn‘t easy to stay upright near the ferry shelter, and out at sea there are about 5 ships at anchor, presumably waiting for the weather to pass.

Plus, new audiobook, which I‘m enjoying a lot so far.

TrishB I can small the sea air 😁 5y

Having heard 2 of the authors short stories on the radio 4 short story prize i was looking forward to trying this novel and it didn't disappoint. Rachel is a wolf expert who returns from idaho to her home in the lake district to oversee a project to reintroduce wolves to the countryside. I loved the ability to craft an engaging story of family, life and nature. A gentle story but i was absorbed and turning the pages as i would with a thriller.

The joy of reading sometimes is finding words you recognise but still need to look up - vestigial 'forming a very small remnant of something that was once greater or more noticeable' - i am really enjoying this book, and totally absorbed in the story - I was wondering whether i cd think of anything to post today when i happened upon this extract and word. I think it works. I hope everyone is enjoying their Friday.

It's nearly Christmas so a glass of port and a mince pie frames my latest read with a particularly cold looking cover. I heard one of the writer's short stories on the bbc short story competition this yr so thought id give this a go.

This is Moby. He may not be #AWolfAtTheDoor, but he's the nearest I've got, living down the road at Escot Park 'WildWood' with siblings Elvis, Sting, PJ, KD and Lemmy.

The book is *still* in my Audible queue. One day!

What happens when #savage beasts (well, wolves) are reintroduced to the UK?

I think this sounds fascinating! Last year, 6 wolf cubs were brought to live in a country park near us, as part of a research study into 'rewilding'. Their names: Elvis, Sting, Moby, Lemmy, K.D. And P.J. (Of course!)

#nuyear @Cinfhen @TrishB

TrishB Those names are awesome 👍🏻 very timely given yesterday‘s escaped wolf!! 6y
