Cinemaps: An Atlas of 35 Great Movies | Andrew DeGraff, A.D. Jameson
12 posts | 2 read | 1 reading | 21 to read
This beautifully illustrated atlas of beloved movies is an essential reference for cinephiles, fans of great films, and anyone who loves the art of mapmaking. Acclaimed artist Andrew DeGraff has created beautiful hand-painted maps of all your favorite films, from King Kong and North by Northwest to The Princess Bride, Fargo, Pulp Fiction, even The Breakfast Clubwith the routes of major characters charted in meticulous cartographic detail. Follow Marty McFly through the Hill Valley of 1985, 1955, and 1985 once again as he races Back to the Future. Trail Jack Torrance as he navigates the corridors of the Overlook Hotel in The Shining. And join Indiana Jones on a globe-spanning journey from Nepal to Cairo to London on his quest for the famed Lost Ark. Each map is presented in an 11-by-14-inch format, with key details enlarged for closer inspection, and is accompanied by illuminating essays from film critic A. D. Jameson, who speaks to the unique geographies of each film.

In no order:
*Laura Dern (What a filmography! Here are just a few of my favorites: Wild At Heart, Blue Velvet, Jurassic Park, The Master)
*Amy Adams (Some favorites: Arrival, Sharp Objects, Vice)
*For relatively new talent, no doubt my favorite is Lily Gladstone based off of her incredible performance in Killers of The Flower Moon (the first Native American to win a Golden Globe for Best Actress in Motion Picture Drama & the first to ever (CONT)

dabbe 🖤 all 3! Thanks for sharing! 💜🧡💜 12h
vivastory nominated for the same category in the Oscars.
Honorable mentions-Scream Queens would be a tie between Samara Weaving (for the excellent Ready Or Not & the fantastic Mayhem with Steven Yeun) & Sigourney Weaver (just for Alien). Anna Karina (esp the collaborations w/ JP Belmondo), Tilda Swinton (gloriously weird), Toni Collette, Helena Bonham Carter etc

My 7 favorite movies released in '22 (excluding favorite pre '22 releases that I watched this year, that'd be a whole separate list). There are several out that I still want to see (esp. The Fabelmans, Empire of Light & The Menu).
What were your favorite movies of the year?

batsy I've hardly been able to watch any movies this year! I so wanted to catch Nope in the cinemas but missed it. I'm taking a screenshot of this to make sure I watch at least some of these soon 👍🏾 1y
vivastory @batsy I think that you'd especially like Nope, Everything Everywhere etc & Banshees of Inisherin (before I left Twitter one of my mutuals called it the cinematic equivalent of a nyrb classic & I definitely agree) 1y
batsy @vivastory Oooh, now I'm definitely interested in Banshees! I'm also really keen to watch The Northman. 1y
See All 8 Comments
vivastory @batsy There is a great article on lithub about The Northman, written by multiple authors. Some praising it & some critical of the movie. I found it very informative and interesting. I recall it had several spoilers so I'd maybe read it afterwards. 1y
jlhammar Just watched Banshees the other night. Fantastic! 1y
vivastory @jlhammar It exceeded my expectations. Perfect cast 1y
Reggie I haven‘t watched Everything but I want Michelle Yeoh to get an Oscar. I‘ve loved her ever since Crouching Tiger where she plays that really soft yet strong in love woman who in the same movie has one of the best fight scenes ever with Zhang Ziyi. 1y
vivastory @Reggie I will be very upset if she doesn't. I have to say that out of the 7 Everything is probably my favorite. I have recently watched a couple of other movies from the early 2000s that reminded me of Crouching Tiger etc in a good way: Hero & House of Flying Daggers. 1y

Just returned from the theater where I saw dramatist & director Martin McDonagh's latest. I admire his previous movies, esp In Bruges & Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri so this has been one of my most anticipated. Did not disappoint. Farrell & Gleeson are perfect together. The rest of the cast (esp Farrell's previous collaborator Barry Keoghan & Kerry Condon as Farrell's bookish no nonsense sister) shine. In my top 5 released this year.

JamieArc Really looking forward to this one. And I appreciate the link to 3 Billboards. Makes me want to see this even more b 1y
vivastory @JamieArc It's fantastic! I would see it again in theaters & there's not many movies I say that about. 1y
Palimpsest Cool! So glad I saw your review of this. I was wondering how it was and I‘m glad to hear you thought it was fantastic! 1y

vivastory @Palimpsest I think that you'd like it. I def recommend it 1y
Leftcoastzen I just saw the trailer yesterday, definitely want to see it. 1y
jlhammar Looking forward to this. Loved In Bruges. 1y
sarahbarnes Oh, I‘m adding this to my list. 1y
vivastory @Leftcoastzen I plan on watching Tar later this week, but I might go back to see it next weekend 1y
vivastory @jlhammar He's a very interesting director 1y
vivastory @sarahbarnes We haven't talked about movies very often, but I think you'd really like it! It swerves between the humorous and the heartbreaking seamlessly 1y
sarahbarnes Just circling back here to say I saw this film last night and it was fantastic! So unnerving, in the best way. 1y
vivastory @sarahbarnes I appreciated how Farrell & Gleeson's conflict was used as a larger metaphor. I agree, very unnerving. 1y

As they should. Everything Everywhere All At Once remains the best new movie I have seen this year. Funny, strange, innovative & strangely moving. Wouldn't have been nearly as memorable without Yeoh's performance

Branwen I really need to see this! 2y
vivastory @Branwen It's an unusual movie, but very moving. I think you'd like it! A24 also produced my fave movie of last year. They def fill a gap for experimental movies w/ bigger leads. Good stuff. 2y
Branwen @vivastory I'll have to see if it's playing anywhere near me! 2y

1) I love going to the movies! I only go for ones that I'm really excited about, but it's always one of my most anticipated activities. I also enjoy live music, but haven't been since the pandemic.
2) Just on Litsy. I tend to skip past reviews of my most anticipated until I have read the book. I have thought about buying a subscription to Kirkus as I used to love reading their reviews.
3) My recliner in my living room.

Eggs I miss good movies - it‘s so easy to find something on Netflix. Thanks for playing 💕📖🎥 2y

Each map is stunning, There is so much detail in each map.

The essays that accompanied each map were incredibly insightful in its analysis. They were easy to read, concise, and flowed nicely.

My issue with this book is the size of the maps. Even though they take up a whole page, the maps are still too small to fully appreciate.

Together, the essays and the maps create a beautiful book that will make you want to re-watch the movies.

Gezemice Picture? 6y

Gezemice @oddandbookish An example of the maps from the book. If it is a book when you talk about something visual, it helps to post a picture, so people understand what you are talking about. 6y
oddandbookish @Gezemice oh okay. I just didn‘t have to time to take a picture of one. Sorry 6y
oddandbookish @Gezemice If you look up the book on Amazon you can preview the book and see them. 6y
oddandbookish @Gezemice Also this is just an abbreviated review since Litsy limits the amount of characters. In my full review I explain it way more 😊 6y
Gezemice @oddandbookish Oh ok. I saw others posting pics. It is beautiful! 6y
