David Bowie
David Bowie: A Life | Dylan Jones
Dylan Joness engrossing, magisterial biography of David Bowie is unlike any Bowie story ever written. Drawn from over 180 interviews with friends, rivals, lovers, and collaborators, some of whom have never before spoken about their relationship with Bowie, this oral history weaves a hypnotic spell as it unfolds the story of a remarkable rise to stardom and an unparalleled artistic path. Tracing Bowies life from the English suburbs to London to New York to Los Angeles, Berlin, and beyond, its collective voices describe a man profoundly shaped by his relationship with his schizophrenic half-brother Terry; an intuitive artist who could absorb influences through intense relationships and yet drop people cold when they were no longer of use; and a social creature equally comfortable partying with John Lennon and dining with Frank Sinatra. By turns insightful and deliciously gossipy, DAVID BOWIE is as intimate a portrait as may ever be drawn. It sparks with admiration and grievances, lust and envy, as the speakers bring you into studios and bedrooms they shared with Bowie, and onto stages and film sets, opening corners of his mind and experience that transform our understanding of both artist and art. Including illuminating, never-before-seen material from Bowie himself, drawn from a series of Joness interviews with him across two decades, DAVID BOWIE is an epic, unforgettable cocktail-party conversation about a man whose enigmatic shapeshifting and irrepressible creativity produced one of the most sprawling, fascinating lives of our time.

It was recently my birthday, for which I received a cute 500-piece jigsaw, "Where's Bowie?", and his latest album, Toy, in a 3-disc box set, which is amazing! It was recorded in 2000, but David's record company didn't want to put it out ? Some of the tracks have seeped out over the years, but it's great to have it as David intended. I doubt the cover is what he conceived, but it takes its cue from the Where Are We Now video, & the mix of ??

Bookwomble ... baby and mature photos of David is appropriate to the album concept of taking his early songs and updating them. (I have no justification for posting this on a book platform 👨🏼‍🎤) 2y

Eric‘s #staffpick is David Bowie: The Oral History by Dylan Jones! “This incredible chronicle cuts to the heart of the Bowie mythos, through the personas to the person. Presented from multiple angles, the oral history captures different viewpoints of the same events. The book shines as it spotlights Bowie as a multifaceted figure capable of conducting himself in a fashion both good and bad, a luminous icon who often existed with a gray morality.”

Tin Machine were one of Bowie's side projects and a welcome diversion from what was a stagnating career at the end of the 80s. After the world wide highs of 'Lets Dance' the following albums 'Tonight' and 'Never Let Me Down' were less well received both critically and by the fan base.👇

TrishB The band consisted of Bowie guitarist and producer Reeves Gabriel's and the Sales brothers Tony and Hunt. The band aimed for a sound influenced by bands like Sonic Youth and The Pixies.
'Amazing' is taken from the first Tin Machine album which is notable for also containing a cover of John Lennon track 'Working Class Hero' and the autobiographical 'Crack City' which in part refers to Bowie's cocaine years.

TrishB This is a new book about Bowie ( so new I haven't had the chance to read it all yet) but does include several bits on Tin Machine and a great piece by Reeves Gabriels on how it all came to happen. The book is constructed of interview quotes by all sorts of people involved in Bowie's career and critics. Looks a fascinating read. 7y

Marchpane @Cinfhen good to know 😁@TrishB do you think this book is aimed at superfans or would it be ok for Bowie newbies? 7y
TrishB I will check - but from the bits I've had a little read of I'd so it was ok for all - as it's a collection of stories from people who've interacted with Bowie at all different levels over the years. 7y
Izai.Amorim I‘m probably one of the few who loved Tin Machine, especially the first album. It was a fresh sound. Still listen to it. 7y
TrishB @Izai.Amorim hubby got to see them in a tiny theatre and stood right at the front so he has fond memories! 7y
Izai.Amorim @TrishB I envy him. When I was a teenager I dreamed of living in the UK just got the gigs. So much good music. Lucky you! 7y
