Mrs. Osmond
Mrs. Osmond: A novel | John Banville
17 posts | 7 read | 1 reading | 17 to read
From the Man Booker Prize-winning author of The Sea, a dazzling and audacious new novel that extends the story of Isabel Archer, the heroine of Henry James's The Portrait of a Lady, into unexpected territory. Isabel Archer is a young American woman, swept off to Europe in the late nineteenth century by an aunt who hopes to round out the impetuous but nave girl's experience of the world. When Isabel comes into a large, unexpected inheritance, she is finagled into a marriage with the charming, penniless, andas Isabel finds out too latecruel and deceitful Gilbert Osmond, whose connection to a certain Madame Merle is suspiciously intimate. On a trip to England to visit her cousin Ralph Touchett on his deathbed, Isabel is offered a chance to free herself from the marriage, but nonetheless chooses to return to Italy. Banville follows James's story line to this point, but Mrs. Osmond is thoroughly Banville's own: the narrative inventiveness; the lyrical precision and surprise of his language; the layers of emotional and psychological intensity; the subtle, dark humor. And when Isabel arrives in Italyalong with someone else!the novel takes off in directions that James himself would be thrilled to follow.

14. Page number

The tagged book came in the mail yesterday. I've read the first few pages to see if I'd like it and keep it (yes). But first, I'll read Henry James' Portrait of a Lady, since Banville's book continues the story of Isabel Archer. So, it's off to the TBR list with this one for a while.

Cathythoughts Good idea ! I must reread Henry James & then the Banville one 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻 6y
MaGoose @Cathythoughts I've started Portrait of a Lady once or twice over the years, but always seemed to get sidetracked and have never finished it. I'll try to finish it the third time around. 6y

Today's 50p charity shop find!

Should I read the Henry James first....?

Simona Yes, because this one starts at the exact point where Portrait of the Lady ends, and some crucial events in Mrs Osmond are the result of the events in Portrait. 6y
jhod Thanks @simona! 6y
Caroline2 What a beautiful edition!! 😍 I‘m such a sucker for a gorgeous front cover! 😆 6y
Cathythoughts Interesting, I have Portrait of a Lady in my kindle for a reread.... i think I‘ll stack Mrs Osmond. 👍🏻... enjoy 😊 6y

John Banville is a magnificent writer. In MRS OSMOND, he crafts the next few weeks of Isabel Archer‘s life in a continuation of James‘ PORTRAIT OF A LADY. Brilliantly written, but I would agree that “At times it has the glacial pace of the original, endless psychological dithering punctuated by brilliant flashes of melodrama” (Edmund White‘s review in The Guardian, 2017)

RaimeyGallant Sounds great. 6y
CaitlinR I think you‘ll enjoy the new novel. 6y

Always trepidatious of re-workings of classics that are near to my heart, but I am very much enjoying Banville's James impression in this one!

Curiously unsatisfying. Not sure if it was because I have evidently forgotten the book it was based on, but I think I was far more interested in the side characters than in the moustache twiddling villain of the piece, Gilbert Osmond. Isabel was a good character, as were many of the other female characters but I wasn't particularly interested in her going after her husband, then the book seemed to end just as it got interesting.

Sophoclessweetheart This book completely threw me. I thought Mrs Osmond was a widow for a good majority of the book before confusedly wondering, “hold on a minute..”. It made zero sense to me lol 6y

When you didn't actually realise that the book was a take off of Henry James and you wish she would just quit stalking her husband and go spend some time with either her suffragist former friend or her other rather interesting friend who is marrying a nice gambler...

Fearing a #libraryfail I have started this. Been really looking forward to it as I have enjoyed some of the author's other books. This sounds like good #HistoricalFiction

Of course it's not a bad book, but I'm not sure that is exceptional. Probably, it wasn't such a good idea that I had read it immediately after the Portrait of the Lady, because I did constant comparisons between them and all disadvantages goes unfortunately at the expense of the latter ... and the more I think about this book, the more I'm sure that the Mrs Osmond‘s story should end up as it is written by Henry James. Very mixed feelings ⭐️⭐️⭐️

ErickaS_Flyleafunfurled Thanks for this review! I was afraid that might be the case with this one. I‘ll still read it . . . but at least I know what Im in for! 6y
Simona @ErickaS_Flyleafunfurled It's hard not to compare them and Mis Osmond is a book that goes straight to a rereading pile. Maybe after second reading my review will be more fair... 6y

An amazing sequel to The Portrait of a Lady - exquisite writing - every sentence felt beautifully constructed.

Heard an interview with the author about this book today on NPR, and in Googling to find out who he was, I saw him described as “one of the best novelists in the English language.” Well then! I guess I‘ll be adding John Banville to my reading list in the new year, though maybe not this particular book. The Sea sounds more appealing to me.

As I enjoyed a coffee at one of my favourite cafes this morning the owner approached my table and GAVE me this book.

She said, “The writing is beautiful but it‘s just not for me. I wanted to give it to someone I knew would appreciate it.”

Have any of you read this?

DivineDiana No, but what a kind gesture! 📚 7y
LauraBrook I ordered my copy from thebUK because I ❤️❤️❤️ this cover! Haven‘t cracked it yet, though, and will probably be a few years before I do so. But I had to get it - Portrait of a Lady is one of my favorites! What a nice coffee shop you go to! 7y
Libby1 @DivineDiana - I know! She usually sees me reading whenever I‘m there. It was such a kind thing for her to do. 7y

Part 3 of the mail - this is totally a #blameitonLitsy purchase! So happy I know about Book Depository, I can get awesome U.K. editions so much easier and cheaper than from Amazon UK. Plus, I can get titles that are released earlier there than in the States! #booknerdwin

TrishB I love the vintage minis 😀 7y
tricours I keep trying to buy books from TBD, but they're always more expensive than what I can find on eBay or the same price as on Scandinavia's "Amazon". 7y
AlaMich I'm sorry, but I can't see Mrs. Osmond without thinking of Donny and Marie. Or are you too young to know them? And if you are, please don't tell me 🙃 7y
batsy That's interesting, @tricours. Books at BD are almost always cheaper than in Malaysian bookstores, sometimes even half the price! And the free shipping sweetens the deal. 7y
