Legendary Authors and the Clothes They Wore
Legendary Authors and the Clothes They Wore | Terry Newman
12 posts | 3 read | 1 reading | 28 to read
Discover the signature sartorial and literary style of fifty men and women of letters, including Maya Angelou; Truman Capote; Colette; Bret Easton Ellis; Allen Ginsberg; Patti Smith; Karl Ove Knausgaard; and David Foster Wallace; in this unique compendium of profilespacked with eighty black-and-white photographs, excerpts, quotes, and fast factsthat illuminates their impact on modern fashion. Whether its Zadie Smiths exotic turban, James Joyces wire-framed glasses, or Samuel Becketts Wallabees, a writers attire often reflects the creative and spiritual essence of his or her work. As a non-linear sensibility has come to dominate modern style, curious trendsetters have increasingly found a stimulating muse in writersmany, like Joan Didion, whose personal aesthetic is distinctly "out of fashion." For decades, Didion has used her work, both her journalism and experimental fiction, as a mirror to reflect her innermost emotions and ideasan originality that has inspired Millennials, resonated with a new generation of fashion designers and cultural tastemakers, and made Didion, in her eighties, the face of Celine in 2015. Legendary Authors and the Clothes They Wore examines fifty revered writersamong them Samuel Beckett; Quentin Crisp; Simone de Beauvoir; T.S. Eliot; F. Scott and Zelda Fitzgerald; Malcolm Gladwell; Donna Tartt; John Updike; Oscar Wilde; and Tom Wolfewhose work and way of dress bears an idiosyncratic stamp influencing culture today. Terry Newman combines illuminating anecdotes about authors and their work, archival photography, first-person quotations from each writer and current designers, little-known facts, and clothing-oriented excerpts that exemplify their original writing style. Each entry spotlights an author and a signature wardrobe moment that expresses his or her persona, and reveals how it influences the fashion world today. Newman explores how the particular item of clothing or style has contributed to fashions lingua francadelving deeper to appraise its historical trajectory and distinctive effect. Legendary Authors and the Clothes They Wore is an invaluable and engaging look at the writers we loveand why we love what they wearthat is sure to captivate lovers of great literature and sophisticated fashion.

I was reminded of this TBR book after this recent LitHub article:
https://lithub.com/20-famous-writers-...

This was a fun read with some great photos & some interesting trivia about the authors that I was unaware of. A nice way to spend a couple of hours.

Kimberlone I read that article earlier this week. It was so fun trying to guess what was going to be included. The whole time I was reading, I just kept waiting for those two white suited men to show up ;) 3y
vivastory @Kimberlone Yes! I loved the excerpt from Twain's testimony 😂 There was some cross-over between the lithub article & the posted book, but I was pleased to see there were a few that lithub included that were excluded. Esp James Baldwin. 3y
Kimberlone @vivastory I also loved the quotes from the authors commenting on their own sartorial choices! Especially Twain and Wolfe about their white suit choices. Very interested by that book now! 3y
vivastory @Kimberlone I think you would like it! If you can find it at the library I def rec it. There was commentary in this book as well by most of the authors on their choices. It reminded me quite a bit of the style used by the article. 3y

I normally love these types of books. I‘m not really into fashion but I love seeing stylish people who convey their personality through their clothing.
The essays are good but and it‘s a big but for me this book is so white. From every section I only counted 4 black women included and 1 black man. With over 54 authors covered overall I really don‘t think this is good enough in a book like this. Seriously James Baldwin wasn‘t in this book!

Weaponxgirl I dunno if that‘s gonna be a unpopular opinion but these things bother me now. 5y

SW-T Vintage Black Glamour will give you your fix of gorgeous fashion photos. Believe they‘re on Tumblr, Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook...and there‘s a book 🙂 5y
SW-T Once you start to notice something, you see it everywhere. Same with stereotypes, etc. I can‘t read certain books or watch certain shows now without seeing the white savior model at work. Plus, stereotypes of gay people and the sassy black friend in media also make me cringe. 5y
Weaponxgirl @SW-T thank you so much for that book recommendation! It looks amazing! 5y
Weaponxgirl @SW-T that‘s exactly it. I have the same reaction to the white saviour trope, I can‘t watch it without full blown raging. Plus the others you mentioned. If you are meant to be showing variety then show actual variety, also too many problematic men in this book for my personal tastes. It only got saved from a pan because some of the women profiled were amazing but miffed with Toni Morrison being reduced to her hair. 5y
SW-T Toni Morrison reduced to her hair is beyond ludicrous 🤯 5y
SW-T You‘re welcome for the rec! 5y
Weaponxgirl @SW-T I should probably clarify that obviously they talk about how she is an amazing writer but she was in a section with several other authors who‘s hair is essential to their style with only one picture and zora neale Hurston was in the section about hats. So out of those 4 women only 2 got a whole section with more info and pictures. I‘m such a bloody killjoy! 5y
SW-T @Weaponxgirl 🤣 Not a killjoy at all! Trust me, those are exactly the types of things I tend to notice myself so I truly appreciate you bringing it up! I tend to pick up those weird details that other folks either gloss over or don‘t notice. Now I know I‘m not alone in this! 😂😂😂 5y
