Nancy Drew 44: The Clue in the Crossword Cipher
Nancy Drew 44: The Clue in the Crossword Cipher | Carolyn Keene
4 posts | 9 read | 2 to read
Lovely young Carla Ponce, who lives in Peru, invites Nancy and her friends Bess and George to visit her and solve her monkey mystery, which promises to lead to a fabulous treasure. A clue is carved on an intriguing wooden plaque that is so old, most of the crossword cipher is obliterated. When a notorious gang headed by El Gato (the Cat) steals the priceless relic, Nancys hopes of solving the mystery are almost shattered. But the daring young detectives ability to think fast and act quickly results in the recovery of the plaque. Nancys determined efforts to decode the crossword decipher take her to the magnificent, awe-inspiring Incan ruins at Cuzco and Machu Pichu. Through clever deductions, perseverance, and dangerous adventures, Nancy and her friends help to capture a ring of vicious smugglers and go on to make an astounding archaeological discovery.

I've been away from Litsy for too long and I miss y'all!! I'd been having trouble with headaches and took a break from extra screentime for a bit, but I'm feeling better lately!
Last weekend I scored this lovely stack of Nancy Drew. My partner and I like to wander antique stores on weekends and I've been trying to finish out my collection of this series since we started the #NancyDrewBR - I've got more than half the series now ☺️

dabbe Glad you‘re back! 🤩 Lovely haul, too! 🤩💚🤩 2mo

So for my #ReadingTheAmericas2023 reading challenge I decided to get nostalgic for #Peru and read this one set in Peru! I loved Nancy Drew as a little girl so this was a fun and fast read. #bookspin @librarybelle @BarbaraBB @thearomaofbooks

Another silly but enjoyable adventure with Nancy and Co. This time they‘re solving a 300-year-old family mystery in Peru, and along the way defeating a sinister smuggler known as El Gato. Problems with Spanish translations were very irritating.

43 complete for #NancyDrewChallenge and last for the year (kiddo has decreed we will finish series regardless); third finish for #24B42020. @Andrew65 @jb72 @TheReadingMermaid

Andrew65 Years since I read a Nancy Drew! 43! 😳🤩🙌 (edited) 4y

I find it #surprising that although I'm raising a little bookworm, she is completely uninterested in my Nancy Drew and Trixie Belsen collections! They were my FAVORITES as a kid, but I can't bribe her into trying them. 😝 #aprilamazingreads

LauraBeth This disheartened me too as a mom 😔 My daughter was all Junie B Jones and I couldn't understand why she didn't want to read what I read as a kid 7y
Melissa_J At least your daughter enjoys reading. Mine hates it 😥 She'll read the occasional graphic novel, but that's about it. 7y
merelybookish @Melissa_J How old is your daughter? Mine was the same until recently. Now at 11, she's becomes a fierce reader, completely free of my influence or input. 7y

Sace My daughter read some of them. She wasn't obsessed with them. We have the full set and she wants me to keep them for her daughter (if she has one.) 7y
Melissa_J @merelybookish she'll turn 11 in a couple of weeks 😊 I suspect all it will take is the right book (at least that's my hope). She actually loves physical books themselves, just has little interest in what is inside them LOL 7y
GypsyKat Awe! I loved these books! 💗 7y
ReadingEnvy Oh yeah I had Trixie Belden and Bobbsey Twins sets as a kid, and my mom still buys volumes of them when she sees them. (I'm 38.) 7y
IamIamIam Maybe try the newer books in the series. My neighbor tried them at 10 last year & when I read the first couple of pages, they seem very dated. 7y
night_shift My mom read these when she was growing ul and she's collecting them to read again. I couldn't ever get into them. :/ 7y
AlaMich I've got a huge box full of them in my basement, the yellow before yours even. Don't know what to do with them. 7y
howjessicareads @LauraBeth exactly! All Junie B and Judy Moody, which is ok, but... 7y
howjessicareads @Melissa_J sorry!! 😕 7y
howjessicareads @AlaMich - donate them to a school library...??? 7y
howjessicareads @Sace - that seems funny to me, to not want to read them, but want to keep them?? 🙂 7y
night_shift Well, I've tried at least. My kiddo had no interest in them at all so far. She's more Fancy Nancy. 7y
