The Sculptor
The Sculptor | Scott McCloud
A NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLERDavid Smith is giving his life for his artliterally. Thanks to a deal with Death, the young sculptor gets his childhood wish: to sculpt anything he can imagine with his bare hands. But now that he only has 200 days to live, deciding what to create is harder than he thought, and discovering the love of his life at the 11th hour isn't making it any easier! This is a story of desire taken to the edge of reason and beyond; of the frantic, clumsy dance steps of young love; and a gorgeous, street-level portrait of the world's greatest city. It's about the small, warm, human moments of everyday life...and the great surging forces that lie just under the surface. Scott McCloud wrote the book on how comics work; now he vaults into great fiction with a breathtaking, funny, and unforgettable new work.

Scott McCloud is great with fiction or non.
I honestly was not expecting the melancholy, but I loved it.
I took this one a chapter at a time and enjoyed taking it slow. The art was very precise but still conveyed strong emotion. The dialogue was concise but still felt realistic.
I always enjoy artist‘s telling stories about artists and McCloud‘s surprised me with his take.
A beautiful piece for a casual reader or a graphic novel scholar.

This came recommended to me by my young co-manager at the bookstore. He told me to have tissues. Let‘s dive in!!!

Kristy_K I‘ve owned this one for a while but haven‘t read it yet. Good warning on the tissues! 5y

I don't usually read graphic novels, but this one was recommended, so I picked it up to check it out. I really enjoyed it, and read it from beginning to end without setting it down.

AmberWB I have heard so much about this one- it‘s been on my TBR list forever! 6y

This book was brilliant and beautiful.
A story to make you look at your life and appreciate what you have, it's about faith, love and how to enjoy your life one day at the time.

4/5 stars ⭐️

Currently reading.📖 The Sculptor.
I needed a change from novels. I heard great things about this one. I don't know what it's about but that's how I like going in a book. Not knowing nothing and let the story surprise me. 😀

Finished my 2nd read of the #7in7readathon. This graphic novel is gorgeous. The artwork is done mostly in shades of blue, black, and white. The story line was interesting and I finished it in one sitting. Blurbed by Neil Gaiman.

It did give me horrible anxiety though. Anxiety about death, money, relationships, and work. It contains a lot of heavy topics and I felt weighed down by them.

I'm honestly not sure about this one. The art was absolutely gorgeous and the story truly had potential, but the execution? Nope. The characters were maddening and, in my opinion, irresponsible to the point that they created the problems they spent the entire book complaining about. That's something that I can't handle. I wanted to like it; I wanted to love it, but it just wasn't for me.

I have fully embraced the #library. It's helping me save a bit... not much 😉. I haven't quite gotten the ability to time my holds though... all different return dates. I've read two. #bookhaul #librarybookhaul

This book made me feel like dream of the 90s of living life for art and love was alive again. It's hopeful and maybe a little naive, but raw and sad.

pocketmermaid I love your "Portlandia" reference. (Though I'm not sure if you did it on purpose.) I will have to get my hands on this one! 7y

Almost missed Day 2 of #FeistyFeb. This is my #Shadow cover.

My short review on this book, which I loved when I read it a year or so ago, copied over from GR: The price one artist is willing to pay in striving for "immortality". Beautiful, imaginative and heartbreaking.

? "Troy and Abed in the Morning!" ? This was overall quite a serious graphic novel about the purpose of life, art and relationships but I did appreciate the random humourous details, too.

A failed artist makes a Faustian bargain: his life for the ability to sculpt anything with his bare hands. The catch: he will die in 200 days. Turns out, this power is less transformative than he expected. This is a story about the struggle to create, to be recognized, to leave a legacy. It is disquieting, powerful, sad.

Eyelit I just got this from the library! Looking forward to reading. 8y

Wondering if I'll run into any online bookish friends IRL! I've never been, but it sounds interesting & I'm planning to stop by. It's "an annual celebration of independent publishing," and the website's dczinefest.wordpress.com (I chose The Sculptor bc it's the only graphic novel I've ever read ?)

BookishFeminist No but I might be interested! I hadn't heard of it before. 8y
Merethebookgal @BookishFeminist I hadn't heard of it either but someone I follow on Twitter writes/illustrates graphic novels and was talking about it, so I think I'll check it out! 8y

Just finished this so just digesting. Loved the art, liked the albeit well-worn plot, hated the characters! A GoodReads reviewer referred to David Smith's character as douchey --I think I agree. Thoughts?
