Seize the Night: New Tales of Vampiric Terror
Seize the Night: New Tales of Vampiric Terror | Kelley Armstrong
12 posts | 10 read | 25 to read
A blockbuster anthology of original, blood-curdling vampire fiction from "New York Times" bestselling and award-winning authors, including Charlaine Harris, whose novels were adapted into HBO s hit show "True Blood," and Scott Smith, publishing his first work since "The Ruins." Before being transformed into romantic heroes and soft, emotional antiheroes, vampires were figures of overwhelming terror. Now, from some of the biggest names in horror and dark fiction, comes this stellar collection of short stories that make vampires frightening once again. Edited by "New York Times" bestselling author Christopher Golden and featuring all-new stories from such contributors as Charlaine Harris, John Ajvide Lindqvist, Scott Smith, Sherrilyn Kenyon, Michael Kortya, Kelley Armstrong, Brian Keene, David Wellington, Seanan McGuire, and Tim Lebbon, "Seize the Night" is old-school vampire fiction at its finest."

I love when we get to see boogeymen of other cultures. The storm, Alayna, has devastated the Philippines and left it vulnerable to predatory companies who have moved in to raze its rain forests for new development. We meet David, a Canadian, a “fixer,” who is there to move the one resident in the middle of the jungle who doesn‘t want to leave her home. Not only frustrated by her but by all the employees of the company who get wind of who she 👇🏼

Reggie really is, an aswang - an evil spirit, a manananggal- a separator, a creature who separates from their lower half to go flying about to hunt for its food. I love this story because when we meet David he‘s in a strip club performing sex acts all while wearing a wedding ring giving us his duplicitous compartmentalizing nature as he then calls his wife the next day saying he loves her. The final scene is him getting it on with another girl from 👇🏼 2y
Reggie the club when the woman/manananggal busts through his hotel window 60 stories up and kills them in a horrific way. Oh yeah, the employees had quit so he himself had taken a bulldozer and razed her house. This story was great. This recap, not so much, lol. (edited) 2y
Centique I thought it was a brilliant recap! 😘 2y

I started this anthology a couple of weeks ago & dipped into it when I was in between books. Editor Golden states his intentions in the introduction of reminding readers how terrifying vampires are. Like all anthologies this collection had strong, as well as weaker, pieces. The number of outstanding & unforgettable stories in this volume really sets it apart. Personal favorites are the opening piece (& at 43 pages the longest) by Scott Smith👇

vivastory "Up in Old Vermont." If you have never read Smith before I think it will send you running for his books, & if you have it'll make you cry out for him to publish more books. Also loved the cosmic horror of Langan's "Shadow & Thirst," vampire as metaphor for modern disease in Lindqvist's "What Kept You So Long?", the quirky narrative voice coupled with sinister creature in Laird Barron's "In a Cavern, In a Canyon" & the upending of ? 5y
vivastory sympathies in Brian Keene's "The Last Supper." Golden accomplished his goals, & more, in this clever anthologies best consumed in *ahem* small bites. 5y
RohitSawant The ones you mentioned are amongst my favorites too. This was a fun antho. Also cool collage! 5y
vivastory @rohit-sawant Thanks for bringing this anthology to my attention! Speaking of Golden & anthologies, happy publishing day!!! 5y
RohitSawant @vivastory My pleasure! And thank you, man! 😀 Means a lot how supportive you always are. 5y

Thanks @rohit-sawant for this rec!!! It totally scratched that itch for vicious vampire stories. I liked all the stories in here and there were some new to me authors that I‘m gonna check out. There was a nice variety of story, mind bending, suspenseful, eerie, some even had heart, and others were all action. My favorites were Mrs. Popkin, The Separator, and The Yellow Death. I give it an enthusiastic 5 incisor puncture wounds to the neck!!!🧛‍♂️

LibrarianJen Oooh! I don‘t really like horror but I cannot pass up vampires. 🧛‍♂️ 5y
Reggie @LibrarianJen get it for Halloween and then read one a night. 5y
Michael_Gee @Meredith_From_STL Sounds like something you would like! 5y
LibrarianJen Good idea! 5y
RohitSawant Only now seeing your post! So glad you enjoyed reading the anthology! 🙌🏼 5y

#adayinthelife of reader me at work has had enough!!!I‘m gonna have to start taking my breaks and lunches in our office to avoid people just so I can read. The book in front of my face is almost like a beacon telling people I wanna talk. Maybe I‘ll buy one of these partitions. #BeatleMaynia

Sace I hear you! I am constantly amazed how rude people can be. I get interrupted while I'm reading all the time. 5y
Centique That‘s frustrating 🙄An invisibility cloak would come in handy. Wish I had one to send you! 🧙🏻‍♂️ 5y
Eggs I can relate-it seems, to nonreaders, that preferring books to chatter is incongruous and socially errant!!!! Such is the nature of the peopley workplace... 5y

Jee_HookedOnBookz I used to leave my work place for lunch, drive home, (I'm lucky my work place is close by) then read 😅 When I was a new staff, I tried reading at my work place. Didn't work. Too much interruptions. So I resorted to reading at home hahahaha 5y
Reggie Lol, thanks @Centique. At this point I‘d settle for a nice nook in the room of requirement. I can‘t wait to hear your podcast episode!! 5y
Reggie @RestlessFickleBookHoarder @Eggs @Jee_HookedOnBookz Unfortunately we can‘t leave work for lunch. There is this security guard who watches sports and he knows I‘m not watching and he still asks,”Did you see that sick play bro?” Lolol I bring the book down from my face and he explains what I missed. Argghhhh!!! Lol I put my book back up only for the cycle to being again in a couple of minutes. He‘s 1 of 3 I try to avoid. They‘re all so nice, but I 5y
Reggie Just wanna read. 5y
minkyb Oh...my heart feels for you... 5y
Reggie Thanks @minkyb!!!! I‘m just being a crabby patty. I can usually knock out 50-100 pgs on my breaks at work but it‘s been rough lately. 5y

This short story is called “Mrs.Popkin” and I don‘t exactly know who or what is the vampire in here, yet, but there‘s multiple POV‘s and it‘s all very compelling. This passage has a little of #letitbe and some #dontstopmenow. #BeatleMaynia #MayMovieMagic

Cinfhen Nice 👍🏻 I‘m sure there are some #clues 😉😉😉 #StarTrekSummerMay 😘😘 5y
Eggs Well done🤗 5y
RohitSawant Great pick! This was a fun one, too. 5y

This is definitely a #herecomesthesun to save the day kind of vampire short story. In it, Kristen thinks “I can‘t believe #howfarIllgo.” She‘s a librarian, who after a vampire kills her boyfriend on a secluded mountain late into the day, has to spend the night in a dead elk carcass for warmth on some rocks in the middle of a stream. Side note: did you guys know vampires can‘t cross water? I had no idea. #MayMovieMagic #BeatleMaynia

Cinfhen Really??? Like the Wicked Witch of the West??? #WaterIsMyNemesis 5y
Reggie @Cinfhen I looked it up on the internet, because you know it never lies, but it says that beside sunlight, water in motion is the only other natural vampire killer. Who knew! #vampiresoflitsy are probably pissed about this post. (edited) 5y

RohitSawant This was one of my faves from the collection! 5y
RohitSawant Have you read "Paper Cuts," "Shadow and Thirst" and "We are all Monsters here" yet? Those ones really stayed with me. Can't wait to read your review of this. Speaking of, I should get around to reviewing it myself ? 5y
Reggie @rohit-sawant I‘m up to We are all Monsters here right now, but honestly I‘ve liked all of them except for the firefly interpretation and even then Seanan McGuire still writes the most beautiful 2 paragraph metaphor about the real impending storm and the one we all go through with puberty. Anyways, yeah, Paper Cuts was good. Vampires as books, with a Nazi intersection. It was pretty good. This book is definitely scratching an itch. 5y
Megabooks I did not know this. I have the tagged book in my #Audible TBR. (edited) 5y
TrishB I learned that in the Hammer films 😁😁 always good to know. 5y
Reggie @TrishB I don‘t know why I‘m thinking Terminator but what are the Hammer films? 5y
TrishB https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hammer_Film_Productions the original Dracula films with Christopher Lee scared me so much when I first saw them! 5y
Eggs Great use of media/books 5y
gradcat I‘m stuck on vampires not being able to cross moving water...nice little factoid there. 😂 5y

This was an amazing book. I started reading it. I loved the first story. And the next. And the next. Most of the stories were excellent. The few that weren't excellent were still pretty good. This has to be one of the best anthologies I have ever read.

BeckyLeJ Agreed! It's one of my favorite anthologies as well :) 8y
