Wounded
Wounded: A Novel | Percival Everett
9 posts | 8 read | 13 to read
Time Out Chicago, Top 10 Book of 2005 Winner of the 2006 PEN USA Literary Award for Fiction Training horses is dangerousa head-to-head confrontation with 1,000 pounds of muscle and little sense takes courage, but more important, patience and smarts. It is these same qualities that allow John and his uncle Gus to live in the beautiful high desert of Wyoming. A black horse trainer is a curiosity, at the very least, but a familiar curiosity in these parts. It is the brutal murder of a young gay man, however, that pushes this small community to the teetering edge of intolerance. Highly praised for his storytelling and ability to address the toughest issues of our time with humor, grace, and originality, Wounded by Percival Everett offers a brilliant novel that explores the alarming consequences of hatred in a divided America.

Everett tells the story of a black rancher/horse trainer and his uncle in Wyoming. A gay man is murdered in the town and the main characters become involved in unexpected ways. Everett‘s story is so detailed about ranch life, training horses, and brutal weather that I had to research if Everett had worked on a ranch and, yes, he did. This is a quick read and engrossing as all of his books are and it ended too quickly. #10BeforetheEnd #offtheshelf

John is a black man who trains horses on his ranch outside of a small town in Wyoming. When a gay man is murdered in the town the event vibrates through out his life in unexpected ways including bringing the son of his college roommate to stay. Percival Everett is in a league of his own and my only complaint about this book is that it is so short. The ending was so abrupt, I wanted another 150 pages.

Suet624 Yes! That ending was too abrupt and I wanted more. 1mo

“Wounded” is a compelling read. It‘s a quick one too. There‘s a lot happening in 207 pages.

Percival Everett really is a must read.

Wounded is a modern western about John, a black horse trainer who lives with his uncle in Wyoming. He is tolerated but when a gay man is brutally murdered the atmosphere in town turns grimly. John cannot ignore it. In the mean time his life gets busy with guests on his farm, animals and love.
And all his characters are so fabulous again. I am saying it again: I love Everett!

BarbaraBB @Christine Thank you 💕 11mo
Suet624 This sounds just up my alley. A horse trainer, a farm, animals, love. Come on, Percival! 11mo
BarbaraBB @Suet624 It‘s an oldie (2005) so I guess one of your libraries must have a copy waiting for you! 11mo
Suet624 Well, believe it or not, none of them have it. I just ordered a copy from Blackwells. 11mo

#WeeklyForecast 05/25

On this lazy Sunday I started The Family Experiment, John Marrs‘s most recent book. Next will be one from another author whose backlist I am making my way through. I came upon this cheap edition of this Percival Everett so had no choice but to buy it.
Bury Your Gays is another one from the #ToB25Longlist which is excellent this year.

TrishB Enjoy 😁 11mo
squirrelbrain I hope you like Bury Your Gays! 🤞 Well, I hope you like all of them - you know what I mean! 🤪 11mo

Another gem found in a neighborhood #LittleFreeLibrary ! I‘d never even heard of this one, but if Everett writes it I will read it. Grateful today to be outside in the currently fresh air in San Diego, even as I‘m feeling so much sadness for our northern neighbors, including some good friends who lost family homes. 💔

AmyG Devastating 😞 12mo
Butterfinger I'm so sorry. It is all so sad. 12mo
Hooked_on_books I completely agree about PE. I‘ll read anything he writes. 12mo

ImperfectCJ I can relate to the simultaneous gratitude and sadness. Family back east keep asking if we're okay in San Diego, and when I say we are and that our college kid is safe at school so far, too, I feel it acutely, almost a guilt at feeling grateful to be safe (so far) when such destruction is happening only a couple of hours away. And of course knowing that our safety is contingent on something as capricious as wind patterns. 12mo
BkClubCare I found this book last year and because it was PE I took it home. Thought it was great. Our hearts go out to all with threats of 🔥- very sad in so many ways. 12mo
sarahbarnes I‘ve never heard of this one by him either - what a find! So terrifying what is happening. 💔 My daughter is just south of LA. 12mo
monalyisha I always have trouble remembering where Littens are and keeping in mind the little details that make up their lives. It‘s part of why I love #AuldLangSpine. It brings a particular person into focus. I‘m sorry that I‘m learning *now* that you‘re in California, that I didn‘t reach out sooner, and that the details that make up your life are actually quite big right now. Sending love. 💗 Hoping against hope for increased climate justice. 12mo
Christine @AmyG @Butterfinger So heartbreaking and beyond overwhelming for those affected. 12mo
Christine @Hooked_on_books I feel lucky to have only read three of his so far! So much goodness to come. 12mo
Christine @ImperfectCJ Well said. So concerned about what the next few days will bring. 12mo
Christine @BkClubCare How fun that you found this one too and even better that you enjoyed! And yes, so much sadness and the enduring uncertainty is so hard. 12mo
Christine @sarahbarnes Feels like an embarrassment of yet-to-be-discovered riches when it comes to Everett! And sending good wishes to your daughter, hope all are able to escape further disaster over the next few days. 12mo
Christine @monalyisha It's so hard to keep track of where everyone is (region or country! :)! And I love that perspective re: #AuldLangSpine ! So true. We're so far unaffected in San Diego, though inland areas have warnings re: this next round of winds that's arriving. And yes, climate justice is so needed. We are all at risk wherever we live. 😔 12mo

I can‘t figure it out; why isn‘t Percival Everett a household name? This is the 4th I‘ve read. THIS title won the PEN USA 2006 award. His next up is getting TON of buzz… anyway, this was brutal and amazing.

BkClubCare FYI @BookNAround - I had this posted to the wrong book 😔 2y
Megabooks He is awesome! 2y
BookNAround The only one of his that I‘ve read (although I own several) is So Much Blue as it was a 2017 Great Group Reads pick for the Women‘s National Book Association. It was definitely a good book. (edited) 2y

Next up! Did I choose a book by a favorite author that was few pages? Yes, yes I did. Did I choose a pie recipe based on what fruit was on sale at the grocery store? Yes, once again, YES. #CaresPieShow #iLovePie

Ruthiella Can‘t fault your reasoning! 👍 2y
