The Ninth Rain (The Winnowing Flame Trilogy 1)
The Ninth Rain (The Winnowing Flame Trilogy 1) | Jen Williams
15 posts | 8 read | 18 to read
Jen Williams, acclaimed author of The Copper Cat trilogy, featuring THE COPPER PROMISE, THE IRON GHOST and THE SILVER TIDE, returns with the first in a blistering new trilogy. 'An original new voice in heroic fantasy' Adrian Tchaikovsky The great city of Ebora once glittered with gold. Now its streets are stalked by wolves. Tormalin the Oathless has no taste for sitting around waiting to die while the realm of his storied ancestors falls to pieces - talk about a guilt trip. Better to be amongst the living, where there are taverns full of women and wine. When eccentric explorer, Lady Vincenza 'Vintage' de Grazon, offers him employment, he sees an easy way out. Even when they are joined by a fugitive witch with a tendency to set things on fire, the prospect of facing down monsters and retrieving ancient artefacts is preferable to the abomination he left behind. But not everyone is willing to let the Eboran empire collapse, and the adventurers are quickly drawn into a tangled conspiracy of magic and war. For the Jure'lia are coming, and the Ninth Rain must fall...

Just as much fun (and just as creepy) on second reading. I love these characters so much.

Today's focus, I think. Once I'm caught up with my #bookblanket... which I should totally update you all on with a quick progress pic. I actually got way behind on making motifs and joining them, so it should actually be bigger, but you'll definitely get the idea now!

Oops, I have not read the first 10 chapters in time for the #WyrdandWonder discussion posts! I have started on that tonight, but wow, 10 chapters is quite a chunk of book. I'm about 50 pages in, and quite prepared to adore Vintage as a character.

I missed the relative date at the start of the prologue and was rather confused by the switch to almost-the-present and then finally the actual present. Anyone else always ignore dates in novels?!

Clare-Dragonfly Always! I skip right over them or forget them even when I intend to pay attention. 🤦🏻‍♀️ 6mo
shanaqui @Clare-Dragonfly Yes! I mean, they're numbers so they never stick in my head anyway, but... Although I do like that in this book it's relative dating rather than dates in a made up calendar. 6mo
littlelionlynnet I‘m so horrible at it, sometimes I‘m, like, 5 chapters in before I even notice it HAS dates. 😅 So you‘re definitely not alone! 6mo
imyril Over the past few years I've become totally blind to dates in novels - it made the first edition of Rosewater almost impenetrable :) ahem, sorry our Read-alongs are so uneven - Trail of Lightning was way shorter than I realised and The Ninth Rain takes no prisoners (...tho that seems appropriate for the Jure'lia ;) 6mo

Yep, head over heels for Vintage tbh 😍😂🦇🔥

Lucy_Anywhere The banter between Vintage and Tor ❤ 6mo
imyril @Lucy_Anywhere I love the way she just darlings him into everything and doesn‘t bat an eyelid at his sulking! ...and the bit where he damages his coat and flounces 😂🤣😂 6mo

“I‘ll be honest with you, there‘s a pile of books on the dining-room table that I can‘t be bothered to find a home for right at this moment.”

There are many reasons I love Vintage but this her love of books and history are huge parts of it

Happy Wednesday, folks! I finished up The Ninth Rain last night. While I wasn't completely sold on the premise, I did end up really enjoying this high fantasy. With vampires, witches, monster plants, and aliens from outer space, there's a lot going on but it kinda works!

Jen Williams‘s fantasy novel (the first in a trilogy) incorporates innovative twists on traditional fantasy elements (including vampires, witchcraft and religious oppression) and neatly incorporates a science fiction element to its antagonists, which I found refreshing. However there are some pacing problems (especially the info dumps), Vintage‘s mannerisms were overdone for me and I had quibbles about the ending but would check out the sequel.

What a surprise this was. It's certainly different than just epic fantasy. I love the world and the peoples especially the Fell-witches and I hope we get to see more of them in the sequel. The story was really immersive and I couldn't put it down.

When you open a fantasy novel and there's no map, is it even a fantasy novel? 🤔

Debiw781 🤔 I'm not sure I've opened a fantasy novel without a map before! 2y
adventuresthruwonderland Right?! I've only recently had this problem 😋 2y
elkeo_TheBookDragon I agree! That was a disappointment when I read her Copper Promise book too 😕 2y

Yesterday's #bookmail brought me this delicious behemoth. While I still need to finish her Copper Cat trilogy, I loved Copper Promise so much I knew I needed this in line on my actual TBR shelf. Especially seeing what they are doing on her US covers, I wanted to get this gorgeous UK cover before something changed. See - I can make excuses for ANY book purchase!! 😁
And FYI: this PB is larger than many of my HCs at 6x9 and 550-ish pages 💃🏻💃🏻
