I Have a Dream | Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

This is a biography about Martin Luther and his I have a Dream speech. He was an African American public speaker who spoke about a better future for his people. He talked about how one day they would get treated as real people instead of overlooked. He lead many group riot walks through the streets to make his presence known and know that he was not going to stop until his people were heard. He knew everyone was different and that made us unique.

Being from MetroDetroit, Michigan, #MittenLitten, it‘s cool to know that MLK first said his speech in Detroit before saying it in Washington DC.

JamieArc I just asked my spouse about this because I didn‘t know that but he‘s from Detroit, and he told me he did know because his dad pastored at Central United Methodist Church, downtown Detroit, where one of the speeches was. Cool to know that history…. 1y

“I Have a Dream” By Kadir Nelson is an extraordinary NF B book! This book has won two Caldecott awards and the Coretta Scott King Award! Amazing! This book is a fantastic DR or RA book on what MLK believed in. It is a great book to teach young students about Civil rights and can be used in a History Lesson as well. At the end of the book, it has the entire “I Have a Dream” speech by MLK! #ucflae3413su20

Viviannef UDL 1.1 Offer ways of customizing the display of information and ESOL 16 Integrate speaking, listening, reading, and writing activities. This amazingly influential PB illustrated by Kadir Nelson has won the CORETTA SCOTT KING award. It is the entire speech from MLK himself but in this form allows for students and even kids to have a better understanding. It is perfect for a DR & even a history lesson. This website provides a lesson plan for teachers to allow...

Rachelleleduc ...student to develop their own “i have a dream” speech. UDL 1.1 deals with customizing & having student write their own speech is utilizing just that. ESOL 16 integrates speaking and writing activities. #ucflae3414sp20 4y
Rachelleleduc Genre: non fiction 4y
DrSpalding While the genre is non-fiction, you need to go one step further because it is factual information about a historical figure. What genre is it? This is a quality picture book that has won numerous awards and should be a part of your classroom library and of course social studies instruction. 4y

This beautiful NF illustrates one of the most well known portions of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s "I Have a Dream" speech, originally published in 1963. It has won the Coretta Scott King award for it's illustrations of the African American experience. This book and its illustrations would make a good RA for students when learning about the life of Martin Luther King Jr. #ucflae3414f17

cheyennewilliams http://www.theclassroombookshelf.com/2012/09/the-spoken-word-in-picture-books/ This link will take you to a list of lesson plans for teaching students about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. I really liked the Martin's Big Words lesson. It has students create illustrated "flash cards" for new/challenging vocabulary words first, and then after the reading, has them use two of the words in a paragraph or other writing assignment. 6y
cheyennewilliams UDL strategy 2.1: clarify vocabulary and symbols. Introduce students to any new/challenging vocabulary and their definitions before the RA. Have them create flash cards with the definition on one side and the word and an illustration of it on the other. 6y
cheyennewilliams EL strategy 40: have students prepare individual card files of subject area specific vocabulary. Having students create vocabulary cards with pictures on them will help to introduce them to challenging vocabulary that they will encounter during the reading. It will also help them to make connections by providing them with a visual representation of the words. 6y

I Have a Dream by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Is a great nonfiction read aloud and author study book for students. I bought this book for my son a few years back and I was really grateful that it came with the recordings of his speech. He has yet to hear the whole thing but one day soon, he will and we'll discuss what his words meant then and now.

We have to remember that he was more than this one speech. That he was a complex man with a message who was taken before his time.
