Pandora's Star
Pandora's Star | Peter F Hamilton
Critics have compared the engrossing space operas of Peter F. Hamilton to the classic sagas of such sf giants as Isaac Asimov and Frank Herbert. But Hamilton's bestselling fiction--powered by a fearless imagination and world-class storytelling skills--has also earned him comparison to Tolstoy and Dickens. Hugely ambitious, wildly entertaining, philosophically stimulating: the novels of Peter F. Hamilton will change the way you think about science fiction. Now, with "Pandora's Star," he begins a new multivolume adventure, one that promises to be his most mind-blowing yet. The year is 2380. The Intersolar Commonwealth, a sphere of stars some four hundred light-years in diameter, contains more than six hundred worlds, interconnected by a web of transport "tunnels" known as wormholes. At the farthest edge of the Commonwealth, astronomer Dudley Bose observes the impossible: Over one thousand light-years away, a star . . . vanishes. It does not go supernova. It does not collapse into a black hole. It simply "disappears." Since the location is too distant to reach by wormhole, a faster-than-light starship, the "Second Chance," is dispatched to learn what has occurred and whether it represents a threat. In command is Wilson Kime, a five-time rejuvenated ex-NASA pilot whose glory days are centuries behind him. Opposed to the mission are the Guardians of Selfhood, a cult that believes the human race is being manipulated by an alien entity they call the Starflyer. Bradley Johansson, leader of the Guardians, warns of sabotage, fearing the Starflyer means to use the starship's mission for its own ends. Pursued by a Commonwealth special agent convinced the Guardians are crazy but dangerous, Johansson flees. But the danger is not averted. Aboard the "Second Chance," Kime wonders if his crew has been infiltrated. Soon enough, he will have other worries. A thousand light-years away, something truly incredible is waiting: a deadly discovery whose unleashing will threaten to destroy the Commonwealth . . . and humanity itself. "Could it be that Johansson was right?" "From the Hardcover edition."

Decided to take a break from The Expanse but keeping it in the same genre for Bk6 of #WinterReadathon Got this in last years #JolabokaflodSwap & wanted to (hopefully) finish it before this years (holding out hope both my packages come before Xmas Eve🤞🤞). It‘s a large book at over 1,000pgs but we can dream right?

1143 pages later, I finally finished Pandora's Star, the March pick for the Sword and Laser book club. I didn't love every minute but kept going because the whole point is exposure to a wide variety of fantasy and science fiction books!

Where to even begin. If lives can be repeated through rejuvenation and the entire universe is your worldbuilding, how can an author even fit it into one book? (He didn't, this ends on a cliffhanger!) ↘️

ReadingEnvy The book was published in 2004 and sometimes feels so outdated (some language use is downright offensive!) while other times it feels very current (people in Santa Monica care more about their power disruption than the plight of intergalactic refugees.) ↘️ 2y
ReadingEnvy Some of the aliens were interesting, the underlying mystery was frustrating, and by the time threads were being pulled together I'd forgotten where they'd started. And since the story doesn't end, I may never know if some of my suspicions are accurate.

I'd rather read eight shorter novels focused in on eight of the story lines. And of all the world building, I really just want to be able to hop on a loop train, thanks.

Went to the library today and got some quickies to read on top of Pandoras Star (it‘s slow going due to the fact that a lot of the book is a recap of Hamiltons Void series). I‘m pretty excited to read my first Alastair Reynolds though, if I like it then I definitely plan on reading more of him!

The first half of December … book book books! #BookHaul #Goldsboro

Pandora‘s Star & Hercule Poirot‘s Christmas are the only December reads and I‘ve only read 4 of the others.

A lot to look forward to in the new year!

I was feeling kind of down on myself for only reading three books in August and then I realized that the tagged alone was like the equivalent of three or four books. That would put me back to the low side of my average.

I managed to catch up with my BookSpin picks so now I'm just behind on the DoubleSpin. I also made progress on my #BuriedAliveChallenge and have an average of 113 points per book there.

Okay so this book is massive and while it took me a lot longer than I had planned to finish I enjoyed it. This is basically 900 pages of set up to a conflict that isn‘t resolved at the end which is kind of frustrating but not enough to make me rage quit. I hadn‘t even reached the conflict when I went out and bought the concluding volume. I‘m impressed with the world building and the way seeming tangents end up coming together.#BuriedAliveChallenge

Hoping I can finally conquer this chunkster with some porch reading. It‘s finally cool enough to be outside with a nice light breeze.

#BookReport
Another week where I haven't finished anything BUT I am over the 50% mark in my 988 page book as well as in Seed to Harvest which is an omnibus of four books.

#WeeklyForecast
My goal is to complete both of my chunksters so we'll see what happens. I'm slowly getting through my BookSpin backlog. I've got to stop putting chunksters on my list lol.

Still plugging along with Pandora‘s Star. I‘m enjoying it and watching the various storylines start to overlap but a little disappointed it‘s taking me so long. Even Callie thinks I should be done by now. Lol.

It‘s good porch reading weather so I decided to tackle one of the four chunksters in my #BookSpin backlist. I‘m only in chapter two but including the prologue each section feels like a completely different story.

Jsuttonmorse I liked this one a lot, but it definitely takes a while to get the shape of the world 3y

Happy #BookSpin day to all who celebrate! This is my June tbr stack with the tagged as my book spin and the pattern master omnibus as my double. On my nook is my #CalibreRoulette pick, When Gravity Fails. I‘m currently reading the Thursday Next book and have three library books to round it all out. I‘m excited for this month.

🎧 My first book by this author & it‘s not in the Litsy DB? The narrator is a British female.

Headaches plague the citizens on a generational ship that‘s been barreling through space at half the speed of life for 500 years after a mutiny. Is there a cause? Is that cause world ending?

Hazel, our 17 year old MC is a flower girl at the beginning of the story & the captain‘s daughter at the end.

Free listen through NetGallery. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️1/3👇🏻

Twainy A bit YA but I really enjoyed the slow build up & world building. For the last hour or so I was on the edge of my seat. A bit Logan‘s Run, a bit ST-TNG episode Half a Life, a bit Orphans of the Sky. I would definitely listen to book 2! I loved Lazarus, John, Frazer, Hazel & of course the book! 3y
Twainy What exactly is “speed of LIFE” autocorrect? Pfft! I give up on editing the increasingly worse autocorrect ... I‘m just going to start heckling my own reviews. 🤨 (light) 3y

POOF💥 A star vanishes and now we have a SciFi mystery.
Chapter 1 introduced the plot element.
This being a popular book of the genre should be a worthy reading.

An epic masterpiece. Probably the most comprehensive, engaging, nerdgasmic science fiction I have read till date. I devoured this book.
