The Cherry Cola Book Club
The Cherry Cola Book Club | Ashton Lee
15 posts | 10 read | 25 to read
With its corrugated iron siding and cramped interior, the Cherico, Mississippi, library is no Antebellum gem. But for young librarian Maura Beth Mayhew, it's as essential to the community as the delicious desserts at the Twinkle, Twinkle Caf. It's a place for neighbors to mingle and browse through the newest bestsellers, for the indomitable Miss Voncille Nettles to host her "Who's Who in Cherico?" meetings. The library may be underfunded and overlooked, but it's Maura Beth's pride, and she won't let the good ole boys on the City Council close it down without a fight. Which is why Maura Beth has founded the Cherry Cola Book Club--a last-ditch attempt to boost circulation and save her job. Over potluck dinners featuring treasured family recipes, the booklovers of Cherico come together to talk about literary classics. But soon it's not just Margaret Mitchell and Harper Lee being discussed over chicken gumbo and homemade biscuits with green pepper jelly. Secrets are shared, old dreams rekindled, and new loves slowly blossom. Southern charm, wit, and warmth combine in this delightful novel about great books, true friends, and the stories that give life its richest meaning, on and off the page.

Overall the story had some great potential but what bothered me, and right from the beginning, is that the MC has been working at the library and "adores" it but it's not until it's threatened, felt a need to do something for it!

The narrator was great. She had a great warmth about her that showed across all the characters and different tones and characterizations as she voiced the whole cast but she couldn't save it.

Contemporary fiction is usually not my thing unless, of course, if books & libraries are involved. I was in a bit of a slump and needed something light to get me going. A librarian trying to save her library from closing and a group of readers who helped her was just the thing. I‘m looking forward to their further adventures in reading & book discussions in the 2 follow up novels.

This book was FANTASTIC ❤️🧡💛

A heartwarming story of how a community came together to try and save a library from closing down, by forming a book club. Classics are read and discussed, delicious recipes are shared, and friendships are formed. @wanderinglynn

Enjoying today‘s #audiobook before I head to bed for the night. I‘ve managed to find a way to listen to audiobooks while I study and take notes for class. Sometimes it‘s harder to focus on the stories, but I had a few good sessions, so my numbers went up.♥️ @wanderinglynn

This is audiobook 34 for the #BookFitnessChallenge

BookwormAHN Nice 👏🏻 5y
wanderinglynn Wow! That‘s an incredible amount of audiobooks in not quite 5 weeks. 5y
Clwojick @wanderinglynn Yeah! It‘s definitely way more than I was expecting, but I‘ve also been putting in more “active minutes” than I was expecting too 💪🏻💖 5y

This was so close to a pick but it took me almost half the book to get into the story. It ended up pretty good and if you‘re wanting a little sojourn into stereotypical Southern culture, this may be for you.

Well, I‘m still reading this. I haven‘t had much time for #24in48 this afternoon and evening. But I am happy to report that Memaw is doing a little better and I had a successful 3rd date with a very nice man. All in all, I‘m counting today as a win. Time to read a little more before bed.

Texreader Sounds like success to me! 6y
Cheshirecat913 Definitely a win. 6y

Biel and I are up reading bc I can‘t go back to sleep. I‘m starting my #24in48 a little earlier than planned. I don‘t think I‘ll get the whole 24 in bc of various things going on. The good: I have a date tonight. The not so good: My Memaw is in the hospital. But we‘ll see how much I get in. #catsoflitsy #petsoflitsy

In this book #SetInALibrary a librarian takes on the City Council in a battle to save her library from being shut down. This charming book was a nice change of pace and shows all the different ways a library can be the heart of a community! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5

Also, reading this, I couldn't help but miss The Put Your Foot Down Book Club! We only lasted about a year, but so many great times were had! 📚💕
