The Legend of the Poinsettia
The Legend of the Poinsettia | Tomie DePaola
9 posts | 10 read | 4 to read
In Mexico, the poinsettia is called flor de la Nochebuenao flower of the Holy Night. At Christmastime, the flower blooms and flourishes, the quite exquisite red stars lighting up the countryside. This Mexican legend tells how the poinsettia came to be, through a little girl's unselfish gift to the Christ Child. Beloved Newbery honor-winning author and Caldecott honor-winning illustrator Tomie dePaola has embraced the legend using his own special feeling for Christmas. His glorious paintings capture not only the brilliant colors of Mexico and its art, but also the excitement of the children preparing for Christmas and the hope of Lucida, who comes to see what makes a gift truly beautiful.

Playing catch-up here. I‘ve been trying to only post books I own, but I can‘t find one that takes place in #Mexico 😞. I did, however, just read this to my son the other day. Pic from #goodreads.

#SeasonsReadings #Poinsettia #Day29
Love poinsettias; my dad always gave my mother white & red ones at Christmas. We cannot have them in the house; poisonous for kitties.
Love this author; fortunately my Son adored him too as a child. I still cannot part with his books!

tpixie I love this book! And many more! 14mo

#SeasonsReadings Day 29: The legend of the #Poinsettia is also included in DePaola‘s massive Joy to the World. This story shows how gifts can come from the most unusual yet natural places of all, hence the legend of the flaming red star amidst the weeds. This book has made me wide-eyed in wonder yet again. Warmed my heart with miracles found in the strangest and most familiar of places. My review: https://wp.me/pDlzr-6SM

According to Google, Joel Roberts Poinsett introduced the poinsettia plant to the United States from Mexico.

[DELETED] 3803335244 My kids like this book too! Ours doesn‘t have the angel illustration though. I‘m wondering if they took that out? 2y

Photo taken from a waiting area.

POINSETTIAS were my mother's favorite plant along with hydrangeas.

This is the second Christmas without our precious, beautiful mother.

It is difficult to buy a poinsettia like we always did for her.
