Strega Nona: Book & CD | Tomie DePaola
20 posts | 52 read | 2 to read
A book and CD edition of Tomie dePaola's classic bestseller, Strega Nona. Strega Nona -- "Grandma Witch" -- is the source for potions, cures, magic, and comfort in her Calabrian town. Her magical everfull pasta pot is especially intriguing to hungry Big Anthony. He is supposed to look after her house and tend her garden but one day, when she goes over the mountain to visit Strega Amelia, Big Anthony recites the magic verse over the pasta pot, with disastrous results. This package includes a paperback book and a CD of Tomie dePaola retelling his classic story against a charming musical score.

This TL book has won the Caldecott award for the amazing illustrations. This book is about Strega Nona who is the town witch that helps the community with spells, remedies, and food. In this story she hires the help of Big Anthony who loses Strega Nona‘s trust one day. This could be a RA book and the resource below can incorporate a class discussion about trust, punishment and authority. #ucflae3414su19

Estradan https://www.teachingchildrenphilosophy.org/BookModule/StregaNona helps align with UDL 9.3 because it will help students self-assess themselves when it comes to being trustworthy. It also aligns with ESOL 10 because students can talk about trust, punishment and authority in small groups before sharing with the class as a whole. 5d
Summerm The resource you used had so much information about the book! Definitely a good choice! & it seems interesting. I feel like this kind of book would be great for a RA also! 4h

This TL book is one that I have read many times over the course of my life. This book tells the story of a grandma witch who‘s magical pot makes so much pasta that it nearly ruins an entire town! This book is so much fun and would make a great S book. I can‘t wait to use this one in my classroom. This would be great for all elementary ages. #ucflae3414sp18

#UCFLae3414F17 Strega Nona is a TL text that received a Caldecott seal, it was written by Tommie dePaola. Strega Nona is an old woman who helps heal the townspeople with potions and concoctions. She has a magical pot that makes her pasta when she sings a certain tune. Her helper, Big Anthony, tells the town about her pot and tries to impress the townspeople by using the pot by himself. He doesn‘t understand how it works and ends up covering the

JordanHull town in pasta. Strega Nona helps and makes sure his punishment fits the crime in a clever way.

This book would be great for a great for RA and PR. For ESOL students I would use 17 and use the link below and have the students follow along as the story is read aloud. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ULUG8IIo9-8

I would use UDL principle 3.2 and have the students identify the main ideas and repeating aspects of the story.

Strega Nona is a magical woman, who in her old age enlists the help of a young man named Big Anthony to help her in anyway she needs. He is determined to prove that he is worth of helping her, so one day when Strega Nona goes out of town to visit a friend, he takes her magic pasta pot and causes a lot of trouble for the townspeople.

AlexaDP I think this Caldecott winner is a great book for RT because of the magical aspect to the story. Children will love feeding the town with a magical pasta pot of their own. 2y
AlexaDP I think the ESOL strategies that work best with this book are, 12; teaching to two objectives, language and content, 13; using preview/review activities, and 32, using student pairs for team learning, especially for reports, experiments and projects. 2y
AlexaDP For the UDL strategies, I think, 3.3; guiding information processing, visualization, and manipulation, 5.2, using multiple tools for construction and composition, 8.4; increase mastery-oriented feedback. 2y
AlexaDP http://www.storylineonline.net/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/StregaNona_FamilyActiv... is website takes you to an activity guide, that has lessons for different classes. DrSpalding I love that you used this particular resource. This is an excellent resource to use with students. I recommend creating QR code‘s to go along with the stories they have actors reading aloud. Excellent post. 2y

Strega Nona written and illustrated by Timor dePaola is a caldecott award winning, MF picture book about a grandma who is a witch (strega nona) and how her helper made the grandmas cauldron produce a ridiculous amount of pasta that it almost flooded the town. This would be a great CR book because it is the right length. UDL strategy 8.3 foster collaboration and community and EL strategy 2 promote cooperation, would be beneficial with

A TL RA honor book, Streganona is about an old witch who hires a helper named Anthony. She goes on a trip and tell Anthony not to touch her magic pasta pot. He doesn't listen and almost covers the town in pasta! This book will teach students to listen to rules.
