Dust Tracks on a Road
Dust Tracks on a Road | Zora Neale Hurston
"I have been in Sorrow's kitchen and licked out all the pots. Then I have stood on the peaky mountain wrapped in rainbows with a harp and a sword in my hands." First published in 1942 at the crest of her popularity, this is Zora Neale Hurston's unrestrained account of her rise from childhood poverty in the rural South to prominence among the leading artists and intellectuals of the Harlem Renaissance. Full of wit and wisdom, and audaciously spirited, "Dust Tracks on a Road" offers a rare, poignant glimpse of the life -- public and private -- of a premier African-American writer, artist, anthropologist and champion of the black heritage."Warm, witty, imaginative, and down-to-earth by turns, this is a rich and winning book by one of our genuine, Grade A, folk writers." I haven‘t actually read anything by Hurston so I guess I should do that now.

⭐⭐⭐ (3)

Well written, but I kind of regret reading this one. It was witty and amusing, but I learned more than I cared to know about Hurston's politics. Recommended for others to decide for themselves.

Waiting for my son at the dentist office, and came across Zora's description of my home state. With everything going on, fires, shootings, and defamation by trump and Magabullies, it warmed my heart to read of its beauty. #ProudCaliforniac

This rather beat up library copy has a gorgeous cover, don't you think? I was trying to relax and read this earlier, and got to the part of the story where she's working in a barber shop in Washington. Yup. I encountered politics while trying to avoid politics. So I snuck a peak at election results in spite of myself ... I think I may very well sleep soundly to the sound of waves crashing on a beach tonight. 🌊💙🇱🇷 #bluewave

1. Tagged, plus one of the two books I still need for #readharder2018 and hopefully a third book
2. I did once years ago, but didn't finish. I will again when I know I will have the time to dedicate to the project. This is not that year. Writing is on the back burner right now.
3. Thanksgiving in all its understated glory
4. Happy November to all.

This book mysteriously appeared last December. No one in my family owns it, nor did they bring it as a gift. A beautiful work of prose that you see in her fiction.

Love this image of her, Latifah could be her doppelgänger. Zora led a fascinating life and died before the age of 70 in 1960. She was fiercely independent and self-driven; literarily remarkable during the Harlem Renaissance. This book published in 1942

mabell I took a double take, thinking it could be Queen Latifah! 2y
Gezemice I thought she looked like Queen Latifah, too! And they both have the attitude. 2y

OrangeMooseReads That‘s who looks like her! I could never quite put my finger on it. Amazon had the Kindle edition of this book for $1.99 or $2.99 either yesterday or Monday. 2y

These are some of my green books. I'm planning to add one more very important one. I reviewed a library digital copy of it last week. The title is, "Ruth and the Green Book." I thought it would be fitting to mention it here. Take a look ⬇️

It's Zora's Birthday!!! Happy Birthday to my hometown hero. Growing up and walking the same streets she did as a child had a profound affect on my life and identity.

Zelma I grew up right next to Eatonville as well! I was obsessed when I discovered her books in high school. 😍 3y
Zelma @BlackandBookish in Maitland, near Howell Branch and 436. We went to the Zora Festival senior year for a class field trip. I did a huge project on Their Eyes Were Watching God that year. 💕 3y
BlackandBookish I just moved back! I was living in LA and after 8 years I was ready to come home. The festival is at the end of the month, I'm excited to go. I haven't gone in years. So cool to know you lived so close! 3y
