People even waste time denouncing their enemies in open warfare for shooting back too hard, or too accurately. There is no attempt to be accurate as to truth, however. The whole idea is to be complimentary to one‘s self and keep alive the dream. The other man‘s side commits gross butcheries. One‘s own side wins smashing victories.
What is the principle of slavery? Only the literal buying and selling of human flesh on the block? That was only an outside symbol. Real slavery is couched in the desire and the efforts of any man or community to live and advance their interests at the expense of the lives and interests of others.
I was sincere for the moment in which I said the things. [...] It was true for the moment, but the next day or the next week, is not that moment. Like the dead-seeming, cold rocks, I have memories within that came out of the material that went to make me.

Zora Neale Hurston isn't assigned school reading,so I read her work this year.Spectacular.Such evocative writing,and fills you with amazement that she was writing about women who wanted to break free from restrictions that still bind them.Her memoir is a perfect companion piece-there's a character clearly similar to TeaCake,and it enhances your appreciation when you realise the real world memories that have been (cont'd)

Well written, but I kind of regret reading this one. It was witty and amusing, but I learned more than I cared to know about Hurston's politics. Recommended for others to decide for themselves.

Waiting for my son at the dentist office, and came across Zora's description of my home state. With everything going on, fires, shootings, and defamation by trump and Magabullies, it warmed my heart to read of its beauty. #ProudCaliforniac
This rather beat up library copy has a gorgeous cover, don't you think? I was trying to relax and read this earlier, and got to the part of the story where she's working in a barber shop in Washington. Yup. I encountered politics while trying to avoid politics. So I snuck a peak at election results in spite of myself ... I think I may very well sleep soundly to the sound of waves crashing on a beach tonight. 🌊💙🇱🇷 #bluewave

This book mysteriously appeared last December. No one in my family owns it, nor did they bring it as a gift. A beautiful work of prose that you see in her fiction.

Love this image of her, Latifah could be her doppelgänger. Zora led a fascinating life and died before the age of 70 in 1960. She was fiercely independent and self-driven; literarily remarkable during the Harlem Renaissance. This book published in 1942

It's Zora's Birthday!!! Happy Birthday to my hometown hero. Growing up and walking the same streets she did as a child had a profound affect on my life and identity.
