A coming-of-age tale with a spooky twist! Maggie McKay hardly knows what to do with herself. After an idyllic childhood of homeschooling with her mother and rough-housing with her older brothers, it's time for Maggie to face the outside world, all on her own. But that means facing high school first. And it also means solving the mystery of the melancholy ghost who has silently followed Maggie throughout her entire life. Maybe it even means making a new friendone who isn't one of her brothers. Funny, surprising, and tender, Friends with Boys is a pitch perfect YA graphic novel full of spooky supernatural fun.

My daughter (13) checked this out from the library, so I thought I‘d give it a go. This is a really sweet story about acceptance: accepting who we are, accepting things we can‘t change, accepting that sometimes you have to move forward…I would have liked it to be more fleshed-out, but I feel that it would be an excellent start to a series! ☺️

4/5 ⭐️ Homeschooled girl, Maggie, is starting high school and that's stressful enough, but she's also haunted by a ghost. I enjoyed this but I want more. I have unanswered questions and feel like this could use a sequel.

This is A really good book i really liked it and i think it would be good for kids that are like in middle school

Cfischbuch Hey Marisol, when writing about a graphic novel, try thinking about the drawing style - cartoonish, manga, realistic, was it full colour or black and white. Were the characters easy to tell apart? Did the drawings help set the tone or the mood of the story? It takes a huge amount of creative effort to draw a graphic novel, we need to acknowledge it. 3y

This was an interesting YA graphic novel. The artwork is pretty decent. Basically Maggie's mom left and previously she was homeschooled. Now she is starting school and a ghost keeps following her around. She makes some friends and somehow try to get her twin brothers not to kill each other. Okay ending but overall good story.

I enjoyed this one more than I thought! Maggie is haunted by a local ghost, she makes new friends as she adjusts from being homeschooled to attending public school, and she has a great relationship with her brothers. Another great GN by FEH!

While I did like this one overall, I think the author was trying to do too much with the story, which led to certain questions remaining unanswered. Quite frankly, the ghost really didn‘t need to be included at all- I‘d much rather have learned more about Maggie‘s past or her dad and brothers or why Lucy was considered a freak. I enjoyed it, but it could have been better.

A great weekend getaway to New York state. We got a cabin on AirBNB. Stopped at PA's largest waterfall, Bethel, NY (the site of the Woodstock festival), and a couple breweries, of course! Read through this graphic novel this morning; nice early work from Faith Erin Hicks about adjusting to high school.

erzascarletbookgasm That waterfall is beautiful! 5y
ErickaS_Flyleafunfurled Wow - cool trip!! 5y
DivineDiana Looks like a great trip! Where is the waterfall? 5y

#NoFemmeber Day 24: Perfect for #FreakyFreaks, this graphic novel highlights Losing [and Finding] One‘s Self and Celebrating One‘s Inner Freak. Maggie, being the new girl on the block, didn‘t really know the entire dynamics and the social undercurrents among the student body. I enjoyed how the layers of multiple mysteries are slowly unraveled in the narrative – in its own pace that would leave the reader flipping the pages. https://wp.me/pDlzr-5rQ

Billypar I think 'multiple mysteries slowly unraveling' is a recipe for a great book 🙂 5y

Hicks has a fun, expressive style & incredible character design. As a high-school comedy it works great. I loved seeing Maggie navigate school for the first time after being homeschooled.

There‘s a sub plot involving a ghost that really didn‘t seem necessary. There must be a less super-natural way for Maggie to come to terms with her absent mother.
But this is a minor quibble & for the most part I thought the book was fantastic. #comicsread2018

Just finished these two so I can take them back to the library. Both very enjoyable! I want there to be another Friends with Boys but apparently the author has said there won't be :(

Life's tough for Maggie: her mother's abandoned the family, she's starting high school after being homeschooled for years, she's grown up the only girl in a family of boys, and she's trying to make new friends. Oh, and a ghost is haunting her. I haven't seen many posts for this one so I think it qualifies for #lesserknowncomics #fallintobooks

Maggie is starting high school after being homeschooled up to this point. Her 3 brothers all started in 9th grade too and are all established in their friend groups at school. Excited and nervous, Maggie must learn how to be apart from family and make friends on her own. Oh, and there's a ghost that won't leave her alone. This is a graphic novel with heart.

I picked this one up for the art; I loved how it was drawn. The characters and art were great, but the story was super short. Almost like I was missing out on something when I finished reading. Plus the ghost scenes felt forced and weird at times. Overall, it was a good, quick read with pretty art!
