One Thousand Paper Cranes: The Story of Sadako and the Children's Peace Statue
One Thousand Paper Cranes: The Story of Sadako and the Children's Peace Statue | Ishii Takayuki
4 posts | 3 read | 1 to read
The inspirational story of the Japanese national campaign to build the Children's Peace Statue honoring Sadako and hundreds of other children who died as a result of the bombing of Hiroshima. Ten years after the atomic bomb was dropped on Hiroshima, Sadako Sasaki died as a result of atomic bomb disease. Sadako's determination to fold one thousand paper cranes and her courageous struggle with her illness inspired her classmates. After her death, they started a national campaign to build the Children's Peace Statue to remember Sadako and the many other children who were victims of the Hiroshima bombing. On top of the statue is a girl holding a large crane in her outstretched arms. Today in Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park, this statue of Sadako is beautifully decorated with thousands of paper cranes given by people throughout the world.

Congrats on reaching your milestone, @MatchlessMarie & thank you for the #1kgiveaway! (Deets on her page.)

My biggest literary confessions are:
1) I dog-ear pages
2) I‘ve never read anything by Jane Austen
3) I despise deckled edges
4) I don‘t like hardcover books
5) I care very little about Harry Potter (I respect JK Rowling‘s world-building ability & the effect she‘s had on children‘s literature, but I don‘t like her writing much at all).😱

Liatrek Number one was going to be my confession 😅 sometimes I want to get back to my favorite parts quickly. 6y
CoffeeNBooks I don't like hard cover books either! 6y
CoffeeNBooks @Liatrek Good point- I never thought about it that way. My books just have tons of sticky notes in them to mark pages, but those sometimes fall out. 😕 6y

Amanda.T I don‘t get deckled edges either. 🤷🏻‍♀️ 6y
MatchlessMarie I hate deckled edges too unless it‘s genuine from a vintage book or something. Another one of my sins is not having read Harry Potter so I guess I‘ll find out if I like it eventually 😝 6y
LeahBergen I can forgive you everything except # 4. 😂😂 6y
monalyisha @LeahBergen Ha! They‘re much too bulky for me & the dust jackets just get in the way & I have to take them off... I like a book I can cuddle up with! 6y
monalyisha @MatchlessMarie I‘m interested to see what you think when you finally do get there! I‘ve only read the first 4 books, tbh. 🙈 6y
monalyisha @Amanda.T Too hard to turn the pages! 😆 6y
Ingerella Ha, we are twins! And I feel the same about hardbacks too! They don't fit in my purse and I like my books to travel easily. 6y
Susanbones #5 is blasphemy!! HAHA. JK. I fell in love with the movie first so I started reading the book biased-ly. 6y

For #day28 #nuclearcatastrophe I have no idea how I remembered this book but I remember reading it in either elementary school or middle school and remember thinking how beautiful and heartbreaking of a story it was. The little girl who wanted to fold 1,000 paper cranes before she passed away. Anyone else ever read this story? #marchmadness

Smangela Yes, loved this one too! 7y
vrleth I‘ve been looking for this book like forever! I read it in 5th grade and never forgot it ☺️ I also never forgot how to fold a paper crane 6y
