The The Last of August
The The Last of August | Brittany Cavallaro
In this second brilliant, action-packed book in the Charlotte Holmes trilogy, Jamie Watson and Charlotte Holmes are looking for a winter-break reprieve after a fall semester that almost got them killed. But Charlotte isnt the only Holmes with secrets, and the mood at her familys Sussex estate is palpably tense. On top of everything else, Holmes and Watson could be becoming more than friendsbut still, the darkness in Charlottes past is a wall between them. A distraction arises soon enough, because Charlottes beloved uncle Leander goes missing from the estateafter being oddly private about his latest assignment in a German art forgery ring. The game is afoot once again, and Charlotte is single-mindedly obsessed. Their first stop? Berlin. Their first contact? August Moriartyformerly Charlottes crush, currently believed by most to be deadwhose powerful family has been ripping off famous paintings for the last hundred years. But as they follow the gritty underground scene in Berlin to glittering art houses in Prague, Holmes and Watson begin to realize that this is a much more complicated case than a disappearance. Much more dangerous, too. What they learn might change everything they know about their families, themselves, and each other

It has been a while since I read the first book in this series but I was brought back into the world of Watson and Holmes almost instantly. This book made me gasp, cry and laugh out loud. I really enjoyed this book and simply HAVE to read the next books in this series!

There is much for me to like in the characterizations of Charlotte Holmes and Jamie Watson. There partnership feels much more like a true partnership and their chemistry adds depth to each of them. Unfortunately, I find the mysteries themselves needlessly complicated and there is little opportunity to follow along with the two sleuths because the author holds back vital information until the reveal. I hope the 3rd is better. ⭐️⭐️⭐️

While I prefer the first book in the series, I still enjoy this book about the descendants of Sherlock and Watson. It's full of intense mysteries and drama and wild adventure and I couldn't put it down. I don't really care so much about the romance but it adds to the drama so 🤷🏻‍♀️

Book 2 was darker than the first and that ending! 😰 I enjoyed meeting more of the Holmes and Moriarty family and having it set in Europe was cool. The stakes have definitely been set high for book three, and I‘m hoping to get to it soon!

This follows the greatX3 or X4 grandchildren of Sherlock Holmes and Janes Watson, Charlotte and Jamie. Set in Berlin, it features Charlotte‘s Uncle Leander, forgery, paintings, and some secrets about the Holmes and Moriarty families. I liked this as I like retellings/contemporary reworking. #ReadYourSign #SecondinSeries ♉️

This second book in the series had a different tone and setting: heavier, truer to human nature, bleaker. But it was a fantastic book to continue the relationship arcs set up by the first book.

Looking forward to seeing what happens in these relationships!

I agree with what I‘ve heard about this book: that it‘s not as enjoyable as the first book in the series. The main characters became more annoying than in the first one, and the plot was pretty convoluted. I‘m not entirely clear on what happened at the end. But in spite of all that, I will read the third book because I hear it gets better!

This has been my on again, off again read today. I ended up reading less than expected, but that‘s ok! I‘m enjoying this one so far but not as much as the first in the series.

Most of my Litsy posts include the book and one or more cats. 😋 Today I was photographing the cats with the book when @wanderer15 felt left out, hence this collage.

Wish we could have another weekend day for reading, but hope everyone‘s week gets off to a good start!

Scochrane26 Personally, I think the 2nd in this series is weaker than the others. The last 2 are definitely worth reading. 4y

Another thrilling chase, but I must say I didnt enjoy it near as much as the first book. The ending seemed so rushed and abrupt. Not what I was hoping. Interested in seeing how the 3rd book goes!

So...I've finally figured out how to explain this book...it's the Montague and Capulet's meet Sherlock Holmes in modern times.

I love that we have art fraud. I don't know why but I have always found the entire industry to be fascinating. I am at an absolute loss when it comes to Charlotte and Jamie...and Jamie's dad too honestly. They're all just such hot messes. I can't figure out what to do with them in my brain.

Scochrane26 This one is my least favorite of the four. I thought Jamie was too teen angsty. I really liked the next two. 4y

I really like this updated take on Holmes and Watson although I‘m not 100% sure where it‘s going. This isn‘t as good as the first and felt much more like a stepping stone in a series. It‘s still fun though.

As good as the 1st? Maybe not but still good. I liked the complexity of the relationships- especially between Watson and Holmes. But every relationship was complicated and different from one another which is more true to life.
Of course an unexpected ending, Holmes-style.

I struggled getting into this one the first time I picked it up, and ended up listening to the second half on audio. The ending was a little abrupt and I wanted some more explanation, but it did surprise me. I enjoyed watching Jamie and Charlotte‘s relationship evolve.

Shley9225 You get more explanation early in book #3 (my favourite in the series) so don‘t despair!! 5y
