Really hope this one is a winner. I‘m coming off a string of mediocre books.

Sharpeipup I really enjoyed it and it felt timely/relatable too. 2d
marleed I loved this book. Some book are about the characters in a story. Others are about a story in which characters are needed to tell it. I think this book is the latter. 2d

Mehso-so

This book started out as your typical rom com and seemed to have all the trappings of a Hallmark film. But then the main character, reeling from a horrible breakup, decides to devote her time to helping others. From here the tone ultimately shifts almost entirely to an Eat, Pray, Love vibe. And therein was my problem connecting with the story. At some point it felt like two different novels altogether. It was ok, I just didn‘t fully connect.

JennyM This was a so-so for me as well - I was a little disappointed 2d
Purrfectpages @JennyM I hear ya. I saw the low average on here after I decided to read it. 2d

I‘m not sure what to say about this book, or its protagonist. Eliza is a semi successful jewelry store owner who mistakenly posts she‘s engaged on social media. Only problem is, she isn‘t. However, the attention can only be good for business, right? What follows is a ridiculous setup that leaves you dismayed at the shallowness of Eliza, although I did like Raj. You basically spend a lot of time waiting for Eliza to learn a lesson that never comes.

I love the message this book was trying to convey, but I had a hard time connecting with it nonetheless. I didn‘t love the hypocrisy of Clara, even after she acknowledged such hypocrisy. I also had a hard time believing banned books would suddenly be all the rage with teenagers, at least without more build up. That being said, there is a topic, and a message, worth stating that isn‘t often addressed, especially in books about books.

Warning, this not the light hearted romp the title or cover might otherwise indicate. It starts out as such, but quickly morphs into a tortuous will they/won‘t they love story. Right or wrong and without giving too much away, I found myself getting angry with Kristen. I was frustrated with Josh too, but on a different level. There was one twist I didn‘t see coming, and another that I did- the latter possibly being controversial to some readers.

Reggie Have you seen the goodreads review section of this book? It‘s a minefield of infertility. 1w

Then She Was Gone | Lisa Jewell
Mehso-so

I‘m feeling conflicted about this. On one hand it was a page turner that kept me wanting to know what would happen. But you pretty much knew what was going to happen as there wasn‘t much of a mystery to solve. Kudos to Jewell for maintaining the suspense despite a see through storyline. Now for the cons. While it was clear who the villain was, the wrap up seemed rushed. Also, with alternating viewports, I wish we saw more of Ellie‘s perspective.

Jeannineth I loved this story but I thought it was a thriller going into it. Once I got over that disappointment, I enjoyed this story very much. I ended up giving it ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️. Have you read Watching You by her? I enjoyed that story more. I ordered The Family Upstairs from book of the month. I am hopeful I‘ll eventually find a ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ by her. 2w
Purrfectpages @Jeannineth I haven‘t read Watching You or The Family Upstairs. I remember enjoying Lisa Jewell‘s books a lot year ago, but I want to say she switched genres at some point. Her thrillers are just okay to me. 1w

“Having access to information gives you one kind of freedom at the expense of another”. Thoughtful sound bites like these are what make up the essence of Haig‘s Notes on a Nervous Planet. It‘s a mix of personal introspection due to Haig‘s struggles with depression and anxiety, as well as a commentary on societal implications that fuel such depression and anxiety. It‘s the suggestions themselves that seem pedestrian and kept me from loving this.

Bailedbailed

39% in and I finally decided to bail after reading a ton of reviews that said it only gets worse. The beginning was gripping in a Stranger Things meets Stephen King sort of way, but then it just drags on. It also has an unrealistically mature main character who is also a seven year old boy. Yes, I realize the book itself is unrealistic in many ways, but this part in particular didn‘t need to be so unbelievable.

I loved the premise of sharing an apartment but never meeting, all the while communicating through notes. But I felt like the stage of them getting to know each other wasn‘t given enough detail, so the build up to their ultimate meeting felt somewhat anticlimactic. The side stories with the brother and the obsessive ex also felt like filler at times. There was potential here, but it didn‘t completely hit the mark in my eyes.

Pickpick

I went back and forth on this, maybe because the story itself was a bit all over the place. At first I thought I was reading about a book loving trivia nerd, but then it morphed into a story of a long lost family. Somewhere in the middle it all melds together, but a bit awkwardly. Our heroine, Nina, is supposed to be the quirky type, but I don‘t think they made her all that quirky, minus a few moments. Bonus points for a Rick Astley nod, however.

riversong153 I loved this book because it was just pure delight. Nice light read. 1mo
LiteraryinLititz Thanks for this review. I‘ve been on the fence about trying this one, and it sounds missable. 1mo
Purrfectpages @LiteraryinLititz it wasn‘t miserable, just a little bit all over the place. Some people loved it though like @riversong153 . Just like the book itself, I see very mixed reviews. 1mo

I can‘t help but wonder if Abbi Waxman and Kelly Harms knew they‘d be releasing seemingly similar novels, both with bookish librarians as reluctant heroines, more or less simultaneously. I haven‘t read this one yet, but I‘m about to. Let the compare and contrast begin!

My book club never struggles to find good books, but we do struggle to find good books that aren‘t so heavy or depressing. So imagine my surprise when I picked this one BEFORE my book club and found it to be just that. A refreshing slice of life, there are deeper issues explored here. But I found them to be in perfect balance with heart and, believe it or not, a lot of humor. This is not the first book I‘ve read by Harms, nor will it be the last.

This is the story of 3 very determined, yet different women from the same family. For awhile I had a hard time pegging where this book was going. However, as told in varying viewpoints, Stradal pays great attention to detail. By the time you‘re done you really feel like you get to know each of these flawed women and and their motivation, even if you don‘t always agree with it. You also leave wanting to know a lot more about and/or drink more beer.
