The Bright Side of Going Dark
The Bright Side of Going Dark | Kelly Harms

From the bestselling author of The Overdue Life of Amy Byler comes a fresh, funny, and thoughtful story about going off the grid in order to truly live. As one of the most popular influencers on social media, Mia Bell has lived her life online for years. With her celebrity dog and gorgeous fianc, she is planning the ultimate virtual wedding--expensive, elaborate, and entirely paid for by sponsors. But off-camera, her world is far from picture perfect. After being jilted by her fianc and faking her nuptials to please her sponsors, Mia finally has had enough. She heaves her phone off a cliff, ready to live--and maybe find love--offline for a change. Mia's sudden absence doesn't go unnoticed, especially by techie loner Paige Miller, who hacks Mia's account and begins impersonating the internet celebrity. Paige has her reasons. Her half sister, Jessica, idolizes Mia and desperately needs something to believe in. If taking over Mia's online persona is Paige's only means of connecting to her sister, so be it. Creating a like-worthy life is more fun than Paige expected. But when she grows too bold and is caught in the act, a fiasco ensues that could forever change Mia, Paige, and the people who love them. Because somewhere amid the chaos is an invaluable lesson--one that only real life can teach.

Initially very cute and so relevant to today, we could all use some time away from the screens and social media. But this is a very deep story that follows the story of two complete different people as they traverse some tough emotional terrain set in beautiful Colorado. Book #79 in 2021

It took me half the day to remember the book I read a while back with some fun hammock scenes for today‘s #HammockDay prompt but memory prevailed! 🤔😄Personally, I am far too uncoordinated for hammocks! 🤣

Eggs Oh this is great!!! Hammocks can be tricky...🥰 3y

I finished this on Sunday but it was a week & I‘m just now reviewing it. I still like The Overdue Life of Amy Byler better but ended up enjoying this book-the characters grew on me as the book did. It made me laugh & made me tear up a few times (there‘s some sad moments involving attempted suicide & grief). I liked the narrators, they did a great job with the voices & it was interesting to see the behind-the-scenes of social media & influencers.

Finishing up today‘s #audiosouping listen. I have about an hour left & I‘m invested. Today‘s soup is a Giada recipe—a lentil & pasta soup that now that it is bubbling away with the broth it, smells pretty incredible. Since today is cloudy & cooler than normal, I think it will totally hit the spot. Finished soup pics coming later.

Areader2 I made a new soup today it‘s a borscht soup made with beets was very good!🌰 3y

This week‘s #audiosouping pick again. It‘s a good listen so far although I‘m still liking the author‘s first book better. Today‘s soup is Donna Hay‘s Creamy Potato & Sauerkraut Soup which sounded interesting & smells delicious. Finished soup pics with the topping (always my favorite part) coming later. 😋🥣

Mollyanna Both soup and book look good. Can‘t wait to see the finished review for both 😊 3y

My #audiosouping pick this week. I really liked The Overdue Life of Amy Byler & I don‘t know that I‘ll like this one as much but giving it a shot.

This is the beginnings of a Middle Eastern-ish Minestrone Soup that will have tomatoes, chickpeas, & Israeli couscous added to the veggies. Trying out a new spice blend for #BlendsBash2020 so kitchen experiments. Finished soup pic coming later.

slategreyskies I liked this one, but not as much as the other one you mentioned. For this one, it took me quite some time to really care at all about the characters. The soup looks great! 3y

Mia Bell has amassed a following that pays her to sell good vibes and unattainable happiness. But days before she‘s to get married, her fiancé breaks up with her, leaving Mia‘s world, both virtual and literally crashing down. At the same time, a follower makes a comment, suggesting self harm-alerting her estranged sister. Through a series of self discovery and missteps, their lives intersect. Along the way each learns what their happiness is.

I really wanted to enjoy this book but had a hard time getting through it... I actually put it down and read a different book and then came back to it and finished. The storyline of a social influence getting rid of her phone was a good one and the suicide storylines mixed in were also interesting but overall it was slow and just not great.

I admit that I wasn‘t crazy about this for the first half of the book or so. It took me a while to like the characters, but I‘m glad I read it. Trigger warnings for attempted suicide and the death of a loved furry family member.

Kelly Harms's The Bright Side of Going Dark is a humorous, insightful, and at times uncomfortable consideration of the perils (and, sometimes, benefits) of social media. I alternated via WhisperSync (thanks, Kindle Unlimited!) between audio and ebook for this one and enjoyed it immensely.⠀

Harms's novel (she's the author of The Overdue Life of Amy Byler, which I loved) switches between the perspectives of two characters. ⬇️

UnabridgedPod First, we meet influencer Mia Bell. Mia got swept up in the Instagram-like platform Pictey when she started posting sweet pics of her rescue dog in her yoga studio early in the social media company's existence. Her popularity grows, and she becomes one of the dominant posters on the platform, swept up in the pressures of followers and sponsorships and the need to be engaged constantly. ⬇️ 4y
UnabridgedPod The second protagonist is Paige Miller, a Pictey employee tasked with assessing the risk of posts and comments flagged for review. Their stories converge when Paige misses the truth behind a flagged comment and Mia, dumped by her fiance on the day of her sponsored wedding, decides (after a series of trials) to take a break from her phone. Paige--suspicious of Mia's true motivations--steps in to Mia's absence and begins posting in her place. ⬇️ 4y
UnabridgedPod Wow. This book made me think. At a time when I was considering the pros and cons of my own online engagement, it was eerie to read this book. Harms acknowledges the problems with a need for constant engagement . . . but also the possibilities for connections and for raising awareness about important issues that can be a part of social media. Does this book offer easy answers? ⬇️ 4y
UnabridgedPod No. But it does offer up some great questions, assembled in a well-crafted, engaging, and enjoyable novel.

Who else has read this one? What are your favorite things about social media?

OK, I feel like we are on a trend for books about social media, which totally makes sense given the years it takes to publish these novels. This is at least the 4th one I have read in 2020. Unfortunately, they seem to be getting rated lower and lower as they are released. This book is boring and I just do not care about the two protagonists of this story.
