"Bursts with humor, heart, and great energy. I loved it! Park is a hilarious new voice in women's fiction."--Helen Hoang, author of The Kiss Quotient In a debut perfect for fans of Jasmine Guillory and Sally Thorne, a junior video game producer finds herself getting closer and closer to the one person she hates most after a mass troll attack online almost ruins her life. Melody Joo is thrilled to land her dream job as a video game producer, but her new position comes with its share of challenges. Namely, an insufferable CEO and a team that consists of mostly male co-workers who make the term "misogyny" pale in comparison to their obnoxious comments. Then there's the infuriating--yet distractingly handsome--intern Nolan McKenzie, a.k.a. "the guy who got hired because his uncle is the boss". Just when Melody thinks she's made the worst career move of her life, her luck changes on a dime. While joking with a friend, she creates a mobile game that has male strippers fighting for survival in a post-apocalyptic world. Suddenly, Melody's "joke" is her studio's most high-profile project--and Melody's running the show. When Nolan is appointed a key member of her team, Melody's sure he'll be useless. But as they grow closer, she sees he's smart and sexy, which makes Melody want to forget he's her intern. As their attraction deepens, she knows it's time to pump the brakes even with her Korean parents breathing down her neck to hurry up and find a man. But she's here to work--and nothing more. All she has to do is resist the wild thoughts coursing through her mind whenever Nolan is near. Easy . . . or so she thinks. With her pet project about to launch, Melody suddenly faces a slew of complications, including a social media trolling scandal that could end her career. She suspects one of her co-workers is behind the sabotage and is determined to find out who betrayed her. Could the man she's falling hard for help her play the game to win--in work and love?

Melody Joo is a novice game producer in a heavily "white bro" environment. When a joke about a female targeted apocalyptic zombie game featuring male strippers (they have to be shirtless for the vitamin D) turns into her project, she moves heaven and earth to meet nigh-impossible timeline and budget targets.
A soft pick because despite admiring her strength and snark, there was a LOT piled on with little reprieve that could be pretty exhausting.

Gamer girl gets a huge break but has to deal with all the harassment that comes with being a woman of color in the gaming industry. Not as much romance as expected from the description and title, but an enjoyable read apart from that!

Finished 3 audiobooks yesterday while I worked on my paint by number, and started a fourth (tagged) before I went to bed! I‘m not doing the greatest at checking off prompts this month, but I‘m definitely getting a jumpstart on my reading goals! #Jumpstart2021 #TBRDeckofCards #BookSpinBingo

This centers around newly hired video game producer, Melody. The video game industry is-in large part- a male dominated field. Not only is Melody a female producer, she‘s also a Korean American, subjected to comments made by her ignorant coworkers. The title is actually a bigger statement on a culture that permeates many male dominated industries. This is not what I expected, but in terms of what it does for the genre- it could be a game changer.

So. This book. Hmm. It was a fast read, but it is definitely not the rom com you're looking for. It's definitely more woman's fiction, but since the main character isn't entirely likable and goes through horrible harassment and there's so many dropped threads, it's hard to recommend. It did make for a great book club discussion though!! #WinterGames2020 @Clwojick #MerryReaders #TBRread 16pts

TheAromaofBooks I'm a little over book covers/synopses making the story sound fluffy and romcom-y & then the actual story being actually pretty serious & not particularly lighthearted?? This has happened to me several times in the past few months. 3y

Thank God it's Friday!! Less time was spent reading last yesterday because I had book club last night where we discussed the tagged book (which was not a hit, but honestly that makes for the best discussions) #Wintergames2020 @Clwojick #MerryReaders 551pts.

I liked the book ok, but I need to take off a star for the fact that there is essentially no romance. There also really isn‘t any loathing.

fakesteph No loathing??? What? 3y
kimmypete1 @fakesteph there‘s some dislike, but I didn‘t get any loathing 🤷🏻‍♀️ 3y
fakesteph Gah. That would not check off the mortal enemies bingo square 3y

Ya'll. I'm tired. Work was off the hook crazy, so I haven't had time to find a silver book. Instead for today's #SleighTheShelves prompt Silver, I'm pairing tomorrow's romance book club pic with a silver snowflake. @OriginalCyn620 @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks 1pt for #WinterGames2020 @Clwojick #MerryReaders

Not the authors fault because I‘m sure this was written pre-covid, but OMG I HATE THIS SAYING WITH A BURNING PASSION. I am so tired of that phrase right now.

Other than that this book is positively delightful!

Patchshank It makes me think of that friends episode when everyone is helping Ross move a couch and Ross just keeps yelling at everyone to pivot. 3y

I thought the writing style of the author was great, the storyline was enjoyable, though a little predictable, and for me it was a relaxing easy read. I'm not desperate to read anything else from this author for a while, but if the opportunity arose to read another book of hers I wouldn't turn it away.

I planned on this being the last book I read in September but it turned into my first book of October. This book was about Melody who just landed her dream job of being a video game producer. But being in a male dominated job isn‘t easy. When someone leaks the game she is about to be release she starts to get attacked. But she isn‘t going to let it get her down. She was kickass. Loved that there was some romance thrown into it!

I was expecting this to be a romance, and there‘s a bit of that, but the main story is about a woman making her way in a male dominated industry. Lots of girl power with a nice happily ever after ending. #ARC

Cedricsmom Plain Bad Heroines is getting a LOT of buzz in the biz. I‘m looking forward to reading it and I sure hope it lives up to the hype. Too often the books are not nearly as good as the marketing. 4y

A romance novel set in the mega-bro video gaming environment. I picked this up because it was hyped as having the "enemies-to-lovers" trope, which is one I enjoy, but honestly the romance part of this felt a little less ETL & a little more background than I was expecting.
.
It did do a great job of focusing on the omnipresent misogynistic culture that pervades the gaming industry, & how women, even fictional ones, can go about changing it.

Moonprismpower What does ETL stand for? Also your review makes the book sound interesting at least if not romantic. I just started a j/ya book I tagged it and Daphne‘s mom is a coding genius who created a video game ...so there‘s another fictional woman in the gaming world! I‘m hoping the book includes more about that. 4y
Lovesbooks87 I read her book The Perfect Escape and I really liked it. Can‘t wait to read this one! (edited) 4y
ralexist @Moonprismpower - I used ETL as a shortened version of "enemies-to-lovers" since Litsy only gives you so many characters to work with. It was good, I just didn't think of it as a romance novel, when all was said and done ? 4y
