The Emerald Circus
The Emerald Circus | Jane Yolen
13 posts | 16 read | 20 to read
"The Hans Christian Andersen of America." --Newsweek A young woman trapped in Never Never Land leads a strike due to the unfair labor practices of the Lost Boys. Dorothy is blown away from Kansas and returns as a sophisticated woman with unusual gymnastic abilities. While forging an extraordinary sword, a talented apprentice falters and is left to the mercies of Merlin. Poor Alice's nemesis has fearsome jaws and claws, but it also lacks essential qualities--like a sense of humor. Enter the Emerald Circus and be astonished by the transformations of your favorite tales. Ringmaster and internationally bestselling author Jane Yolen (Briar Rose, Sister Emily's Lightship) spins modern fantasy classics for delighted readers. Witty and bold, and unexpected, these tales go well beyond Wonderland and Oz, down the rabbit hole and back again.

A fun tour of Yolen's short stories about classic fictional characters, from Robin Hood to Lancelot to Dorothy from Oz and Alice in Wonderland. My favorite was "Lost Girls," where the newest "Wendy" Peter Pan takes to Neverland leads all the girls in a strike for equality. Loved the process notes and poems at the end of the book too!

Including a pic of my reading buddy Watney finding the nearest sunbeam.

Just finished now this collection of stories by this great Nebula Award winning author and I really enjoyed it. It took me a while to get through all these reimagined folk tales, children's stories, historical stories, legends, myths and more but it was worth the time and I am glad I didn't rush and gave most of these stories the attention they deserved.

And since it is the first book I finished this month, here is my #BookSpinBingo card as well.

claudiuo @TheAromaOfBooks This was my #BookSpin way back in August. 😳 Thanks again for helping me finish one more book, 3 months too late but finished nonetheless. 3y

I grew up on fairy tales, so I don‘t why Jane Yolen, dubbed the Hans Christian Andersen of America, hasn‘t shown up on my radar before. I‘m glad I stumbled on this story collection of hers—a delightful mix of reimagined fairy tales, Arthurian legends, and even origin stories of historical figures. Yolen is such a master of the fairy tale tradition that her retellings could almost be mistaken for the original yarns that inspired them.

alysonimagines Not every story was my cup of tea, but overall I really enjoyed Yolen‘s playful (and sometimes snarky) tribute to iconic characters both historic and fictional, including Alice in Wonderland, Dorothy Gale (my two fave fairy tale heroines!), Wendy and Peter Pan, Emily Dickinson, Queen Victoria, Hans Christian Andersen, and Edgar Allan Poe. 4y
alysonimagines Notes: The audiobook is an especially fun treat; it has about nine different narrators! This was one of my February myth/fairy tale retold picks for #LitsyATXReadersSociety. (edited) 4y
Eyelit You might like this graphic novel 4y
alysonimagines @Eyelit Ooh thanks! I had no idea Andy Weir had written something like this but yep it sounds like my jam! If I don‘t get to it before our graphic novel theme, I will definitely want to read it then. (edited) 4y

This morning‘s #audiowalk listening to #getbooked podcast and blowing up my TBR some more.

This is my favourite street to walk along, its cliff top and the views are gorgeous. That‘s Rangitoto Island there, the landmark that means I‘m home 😍

Tagged book is the one I‘ve just started - looks good so far 👍

Not a fan of short stories BUT this had my name all over it. Peter pan, wizard of oz, King arthur, edgar Allen Poe and even Alice in wonderland are just some of the tales featured and spun into dark but un-putdownable stories.

As with any collection of shorts, not all are equal, but every story was enchanting. Yolen's takes on various beloved properties (Arthurian legend, Wonderland, etc) were fantastically inventive: Alice faces off against the Jabberwock, the Lost Girls go on strike, Robin Hood's real origin story and more! I hope she gets around to writing the full story of Evian Steel (girls forging magic Arthurian swords), because as a proof of concept, I'm SOLD!
