Epictetus likewise told his students repeatedly that they should not speak about philosophy lightly, like the Sophists, but rather show its fruits in their very character and actions. In typical blunt fashion he told them that sheep don‘t vomit up grass to show the shepherds how much they‘ve eaten but rather digest their food inwardly and produce good wool and milk outwardly.”
@QuoteQueen @BookieBiker how‘s your reading coming along? 😊
#Stoicism

QuoteQueen I just finished chapter 2 on how to speak wisely, and frankly it‘s been the theme of the week in my work with clients, though most of them I saw BEFORE reading this chapter. I think all these books on Stoicism are reading my mind rather than me reading them! It‘s a little amusingly freaky. 😬😂 2mo
Faibka @QuoteQueen I know! I was dealing with a lot of anxiety and coincidentally read that same chapter where it talks about how to deal with catastrophizing 🤭 I was like, are you read my mind? This is exactly what I need right now, lol 2mo
QuoteQueen Haha, for me it was the techniques he described. I do them and didn‘t realize it was Stoic. So I was like 😳 2mo
Faibka @QuoteQueen great! Looks like you‘re a natural Stoic 😊 I still have a long ways to go in applying these techniques 2mo
QuoteQueen Every time I read a book the realization I‘m a natural or congenital Stoic becomes stronger. It is an interesting concept. But learning Stoicism has made me even more aware of when I‘m practicing it. 2mo

I have to say that this book has one of the best introductions I‘ve ever read. Mr. Robertson, a cognitive behavioral therapist and founding member of the Modern Stoicism group, gives a candid account of his past and how philosophy in general and Stoicism in particular helped him turn his life around. I was very moved by it and reminded me of the crucial role philosophy has played in my own life.

On publishing Franz Kafka‘s works. How sad to think these extraordinary works of literature could‘ve remained in obscurity because of hatred and ignorance. How many Jewish works were actually lost? What a horrible world prejudice and racism create, I can‘t believe there are people today actively working to live in a world like that.

GingerAntics Or denying that this ever happened. I agree with every part of what you just said. 3mo
Faibka @GingerAntics uff don‘t even get me started on the deniers, either they‘re willfully ignorant or just plain malignant 3mo
GingerAntics @Faibka I‘m more of the opinion their idiotic a** holes. 3mo
See All 13 Comments
Faibka @GingerAntics I agree that‘s probably a more accurate assessment. 3mo
GingerAntics I seriously do not understand people who are so filled with hate. Were they not hugged as children? Did no one ever tell them they were loved? I don‘t understand. 3mo
Faibka @GingerAntics unfortunately, a lot of the hatred is learned and passed on. Can also be the result of abuse, the hatred towards others reflect a hatred towards themselves since they can‘t stand to be reminded how inadequate they feel. On the other hand, many many have come from abusive households who are kind and empathetic, so not excusing the behavior, just thinking possible explanations. 3mo
GingerAntics I get what you‘re saying. It seems hate and loving kindness are both taught...although science is apparently finding now that human beings are born naturally caring and compassionate, so I think that really should make us look at all of the hate in the world. It really is, genuinely, learned. 3mo
Faibka @GingerAntics yes, I agree. And that also includes hatred towards ourselves. When a child is overly criticized and/or neglected the message is “you have no value just for being you”. Again, I‘m no psychologist but I think a lot of the problems we see are rooted in childhood trauma. The more I think about it, the more this book, the Trial and the Metamorphosis are metaphors about trauma of which Kafka himself suffered 2mo
GingerAntics I hadn‘t thought of Metamorphosis that way, but I did despise how his parents treated him. It was really sad. I agree with you about childhood stuff. We have got to teach our children that they have intrinsic value. Then again, in many cases, we need to act like adults have intrinsic value as well. The way we treat our poor, our disabled, our veterans is just disgusting and inhumane. 2mo
Faibka @GingerAntics yes, it is :( 2mo
GingerAntics Added this (and several more Kafka stories and novels) to my wish list. Kafka is very much like Vonnegut in the way they make you look at humanity in a different way. 2mo
Faibka @GingerAntics sorry! Missed this response, yeah! I‘m glad to see another Kafka potential fan 😃 please please tag me when you read it! I would love to know what you think. And yes that‘s a great observation with comparing to Vonnegut, I hadn‘t thought of it that way 2mo

Faibka @Daisey yes! For me too. In the midst of all the dark humor there‘s a very powerful message of the senselessness of war and how it dehumanizes, which is why I liked the book so much 3mo

“What do I care if she is still only a little girl? Just wait and see how much I love her: more than anyone ever!”

Ugh, no just no. This chapter about an 18yo man kidnapping a 10yo little girl he has become infatuated with, was so difficult to read. Granted, this was written a thousand years ago but it doesn‘t make it less appalling, also when you think this still goes on today. I‘m much disgusted with this character and still have 1000p to go...

I‘m having a hard time distinguishing who he‘s talking about in some instances, is it Utsemi? Fujitsubo? Seems like has three or four to whom he has pledged his undying love, lol. But seriously, does he have a one constant true love? I can‘t figure it out.
