A Piglet Named Mercy! 🐽 This MF, RT is book I can‘t wait to read to my future class! The story is about a very ordinary couple (the Watson‘s) and their ordinary life. Until one day, a piglet was just chilling on their doorstep! It seems as though the Watsons‘ life isn‘t so ordinary anymore. The overall theme is love!💕 In a classroom, UDL principle 9.3- develop self-assessment and reflection would be of great use. Being that students can...

acassatta Reflect on the story and assess what they just read. ESOL strategy #16- integrating listening activities into any curriculum can be beneficial so we know our students are attentive (I imagine this as a readers theatre so listening is very important). The following website gives fun ways to incorporate listening activities into your curriculum... https://www.encourageplay.com/blog/listening-games-for-kids #ucflae3414sp21 (edited) 3y
PatriciaS Thank you for this great book review 👍 teacher resource and strategies for this read. Also, for your suggestion for readers theater 🎭 and using this book as a good tool for listening skills and paying attention. These are great skills for students to learn and utilize through readers theater. 3y
DrSpalding The second sentence doesn‘t quite make sense but I know what you mean! I adore this book and the transitional chapter book series based on the same cute character, Mercy! Your English learner and universal design principle work well and you have explained them along with your website resource and teaching strategy. Please do use readers theater in your future classroom. 3y

Gaston! 🦴 This MF, RA book is another story with a great meaning behind it. This book has an overall theme of family differences and acceptance. The story is about a dog named Gaston who looks a little different then the rest of his dog family. One day at the park he switches families with one that looked like him. In the end, it just didn‘t feel right for Gaston. Despite their differences, he knew he belonged with the family he grew up with.

acassatta The UDL principle 3.1-highlight patterns, critical features, and relationships fits well with the book, Gaston. We can notice a lot of alliteration within this book as well as relationships between all the dogs. Furthermore, ESOL strategy #14-simplify your speech by making it sow and redundant would be ideal for this book because of the similar lettering and alliteration throughout. The following website takes you to the authors website where... 3y

The Cool Bean! 😎 This MF, RA book has a wonderful message that should be introduced to young students. The book is about a bean who wants to be cool like the “cool beans”. To the little beans surprise, the “cool beans” were actually really nice and helpful! They were kind to him when he needed it most! The overall theme of this book is not to judge someone based off how they look. In addition it is actually really ‘cool‘ to be kind to everyone.

acassatta The UDL principle 8.3- foster collaboration and community works well with this book. In class, students can collaborate together on kind things they could do for each other. Additionally, ESOL strategy #48- use Venn diagrams to compare and contrast could work well with the collaboration aspect this book holds. The following link takes you to a read aloud version of this book on YouTube... https://youtu.be/4jEgHfLW9d8 #ucflae3414sp21 3y
Chaseb I‘ve had this book on my wishlist for forever! I love the message in this book, about its “cool” to be kind to others. I really like that you included a read aloud for the book as your resource because ESOL students could access that to listen and try to read along with it! great job! 3y
PatriciaS Great review 👍 thanks, I put it on my list to read. The cover reminds me of The Bad Seed 3y
Spearsall I was not expecting this description after reading the cover of the book, interesting! I‘ve never quiet read a book like this one so I will for sure have to check it out. I love the ESOL strategy you chose because it can be used in so many ways in the classroom and could be aligned with a standard easily! 📚 3y
DrSpalding It is so cool to be kind! Your YouTube video is a helpful resource but remember that I want you modeling affective read aloud skills with your students. You have clearly shown that you can easily align universal design and English learner strategies appropriately. The graphic organizer to compare and contrast various aspects of this book would work well. 3y

Creepy Carrots! 🥕 This MF, RA, Caldecott Honor Book was my TeachLive Read Aloud choice. I love this book! Creepy Carrots is about a little rabbit named Jasper Rabbit who LOVES his carrots. We see this because Jasper Rabbit just can‘t get enough! The UDL...

acassatta Principle 2.1- clarify vocabulary and symbols works well with this book because of the various vocabulary words used in the text. ESOL strategy #5- teach technical vocabulary supporting key concepts goes hand-in-hand with the chosen UDL principle. The following link takes you to a YouTube video read aloud of the story “Creepy Carrots” that can be used in the classroom. https://youtu.be/NJnIEbVLq90 #ucflae3414sp21 3y

There Was An Old Lady Who Swallowed A Fly! 👵🏻 This TL, S, Caldecott Honor Book, is a classic story that has various retellings too. This version tells the story of an old lady who swallows a fly and continues on a path of swallowing various animals to get the fly out. The moral of the story is “never swallow a horse”. The UDL principle 1.3- offer alternatives for visual information is an exemplary match being a S book.

acassatta ESOL strategy #42- use timelines to arrange and sequence information could be a great activity to place each animal swallowed in chronological order. AlexRobinson This is SUCH a great series! Literally a book for EVERY holiday or occasion from Valentine‘s Day to the first day of school! A very fun read for students and so many inspiring ideas to go along with it to teach them! I also LOVE your ESOL strategy you picked! Putting them on sentence strips to physically and visually show the sequence is a great option to expand on that strategy! 3y

The Girl Who Drank The Moon!🧙🏻‍♀️ This MF, LC Newberry Medal book was a really great read. The story is about the protectorate and their yearly offering to the witch who lives in the woods. One year, the witch feeds the baby moonlight making the baby magical just like the witch. This meant the witch had to take the baby in as her own. She names her Luna. Throughout the book we learn about secrets, Luna‘s magic, and various other magical things.

acassatta This book teaches an overall theme of family and love. The UDL principle 2.1- clarify vocabulary and symbols is a fitting principle due to the many vocabulary words scattered through the book. In addition, the ESOL strategy #20- listing the most important words and phrases would be very beneficial to ESOL learners to further their learning. The following website includes an idea on a vocabulary activity perfect for grades 3-5. 3y
PatriciaS I loved hearing from your groups book club when we were reading our chapters and having the group discussion sessions. I'm reading this book and enjoying it. After hearing from your review 🙂. 3y
Spearsall Quickly adding this to my list!! I want to read this so bad I am so interested in these kinds of books (MF) and from your description it seems amazing. I agree with the ESOL strategy because it can definitely be used with novels as well especially LC groups like what we did, everyone can have a part and it will definitely help EL‘s as well. 3y
DrSpalding Scholastic is a high-quality resource. Identifying the narrative element of the theme is important for our intermediate students. You are correct that two primary things in this book are family and love. Scholastic should continue to be a go to resource for you as you proceed through the program and into a classroom of your own. 3y

Book of Animal Poetry! 🦒 This P, IR is a great information text option. I‘d recommend this to students of the higher elementary grades. This is a rather large book with tons and tons of longer or shorter poems about all types of animals! This is a great way to share the beauty of poetry while also sharing facts and information about animals! The UDL principle 3.3-guide information processing and visualization is a great principle for this book...

acassatta being that this book has information in the text and many visuals, it can assist in information processing and visualization. In addition, the ESOL strategy #9- teach note taking strategies would be great for this book. Any information that a student believes to be valuable can be jotted down as a learning activity. The following website includes information on the importance of implementing independent reading in your curriculum. 3y
AlexRobinson What a cute book!! I was unaware they made nonfiction poetry for animals and as someone who LOVES animals this would be a great book to look at! The UDL principle 2.5- illustrate through multiple media...

acassatta is a perfect fit principle for this storytelling piece as we can illustrate the story through puppets. In addition the UDL principle 1.3- offer alternatives for visual information corresponds well with any storytelling book. The ESOL strategy #30 matches well because our storytelling piece involving puppets will encourage the use of diagrams and drawings to identify concepts and relationships seen in the story. 3y

I am Walt Disney🏰 This B, IR caught my eye. I‘m a huge fan of Disney and couldn‘t wait to get my hands on a cute biography of the man himself. This book is set up in a somewhat comic book style. We are introduced to Disney and his timeline of life and how the company ‘Walt Disney World‘ came about. This book can teach our students the importance of goal-setting and following their dreams. #ucflae3414sp21

acassatta The UDL principle 6.1- guide appropriate goal setting and 9.3- develop self-assessment and reflection correlate to this book and the idea that even at a young age, you can start creating goals for the life you want to have. This can be a great motivator for young children. In addition, ESOL strategy #28-provide biographies of significant men and women from different countries is a great way to spark interest and show other noteworthy people. 3y

Officer Buckle and Gloria! 🐕This MF, RA, Caldecott Medal book is a super fun story that teaches the importance of friendship. Our main character, Officer Buckle, is great at his job and knowledgeable too, but had a hard time getting students to listen to his safety tips! Gloria is new to Napville‘s police department and is great at obeying commands. Quickly the officer and the dog befriend each other but have a couple ups and downs along the way.

acassatta In the end, the two characters realize how important they are to each other. I SURVIVED the shark attacks of 1916! 🦈 This HF, IR, New York Times bestselling series book is a riveting take on the historical aspects of the shark attacks that took place in 1916. In the mix of meeting new friends and familiarizing himself with his new life, they learn of shark attacks happening around New Jersey!

acassatta Life gets pretty extreme for Chet and his friends. This book teaches us about trusting your instincts and the meaning of friendship. Moon‘s First Friends!🌚 This SF, RA book is a perfect science option for primary grades. The book is a fictional story about the moon and her desperation for visitors! Throughout the book, we learn about various historical scientific events, the main one being the first landing on the moon. The story puts everything in simpler terms for children.

acassatta The ESOL strategy used in the classroom for this story would be #50 which deals with content comprehension since we are learning about some factual information. The UDL principle 3.1, activating background knowledge, would work well with this book because of the science included that some students may know about to a degree. #ucflae3414sp21 (edited) 3y

Pandas🐼 This NF, IR is a great classroom resource for students to learn accurate information about pandas. The book discusses facts like; most pandas are located in China, they eat primarily bamboo (20-40 pounds a day), there are only about 1600 pandas left in the wild and many more interesting panda bear and red panda facts. While this book doesn‘t hold a theme, it provides educational information in an easy-read form perfect for the classroom.

acassatta The UDL principles that align best are 3.1, activate background knowledge and 7.1, optimize individual choice. The Three Little Pigs | Patricia Seibert
post image
Pickpick

The Three Little Pigs!🐷This TL, S piece is a must-have in the classroom. Through Patricia Seibert‘s retelling of The Three Little Pigs, we travel through the classic story PCs the three pigs, their three homes, and the big bad Wolf. In the end, we learn that putting time and effort into anything pays off. The UDL principles I see that fit are 1.3- offer alternatives for visual information and 2.5- illustrating through multiple media.

acassatta Because I see this book is best as a storytelling piece, the class would see various forms of visuals through puppets of the three pigs and their experiences in the book. The ESOL strategy I would match with this lesson is #17- providing contextual support though visuals, body language, and facial expressions. #ucflae3414sp21 (edited) 3y
Ericaj Great post. As you mention, this book is good for doing storytelling in the class. The book sounds interesting, and it is something that I will look into. 3y
DrSpalding Your posts are looking really good! Obviously your peers are enjoying them a lot. The one thing you are missing is a website resource. Be sure to add one for each book. 3y

I was drawn to this book because the cover was super appealing. I love the use of orange as the only form of color in this story-super unique. Of course the little bunny on the front cover is super cute too! I know a kindergarten student would be super interested in hearing this story! :)

ReadingOver50 So cute! 3y
