This HF book would be a great RA because it tells a beautiful story about two kid soldiers on opposite sides of the Civil War, that meet, help each other, and become friends. It‘s a wonderful story to use to not only discuss the Civil War at an elementary level, but also to talk about friendships and not judging others.
UDL 3.1 activate or supply background knowledge would be perfect to discuss what kids may know about the Civil War, and

Chaseb supply some information before reading.

DrSpalding I believe historical fiction is correct however the individuals in the story were real people. Scholastic is a high-quality resource that you should continue to use. I like the idea of filling in the graphic organizer which certainly would meet English learner strategy seven. 3y

This MF, Geisel Honor book would make for a great RA at the beginning of the school year. It is about a hog that loves books but can‘t read, but after reading along side the librarian, he started to learn how to read! The book also talks about getting books and returning them to the library which would be a great story to introduce students to how to use the classroom or school library!

This RF, IR or RA Caldecott Honor book is a simple read about a boy seeing snowflake after snowflake, and eventually the whole town is covered in snow. With its simple and redundant language, this book would be great for beginning readers or ELL students. This book could be used to introduce a science lesson about whether and snow.

UDL strategy 7.2 optimize relevance, value, and authenticity would be perfect to connect the book to a science lesson. ESOL strategy 14 simplify your speech by making it slower and redundant works well with the simple language in this book!

DrSpalding This Caldecott award winner belongs in your classroom library! I like the resource you included that explains snow related activities. In social studies, in kindergarten you have to teach about the seasons. This could be a book to help you do just that! In some of the other grade levels, science content relates to what this book has to offer. Good choice. 3y

Wolf in the Snow | Matthew Cordell

This RF Caldecott Medal book would be a great IR for all students, including ESOL students, with almost no words on the pages. It illustrates a girl getting lost and a wolf getting lost, and they find each other, and the girl helps the wolf, carrying him through the snow. The girl reunites the wolf with his pack and then the wolf pack helps her family find her. I think it‘s a super sweet story to teach kids about helping one another.

KeanaE It is so important to have books for English Language Learners (ELLs). The ELLs are now able to enjoy books like these alone as well know what is going on in the story because the lack of words. 3y
AndreaEfres Thank you Chase for being such an amazing peer! This book recommendation will definitely help me out in my own classroom. Reaching English Learners is so vital in all of our classroom, monitoring students‘ comprehension on a periodic basis is also a strategy I enjoy. 3y
DrSpalding While independent reading is important I also want you thinking about ways that books like this can be used in the content area. You have two snow related books that would work well in science content.
