A Piglet Named Mercy
A Piglet Named Mercy | Kate DiCamillo
7 posts | 8 read | 7 to read
Every porcine wonder was once a piglet! Celebrate the joy of a new arrival with this endearing picture-book prequel to the New York Times best-selling Mercy Watson series. Mr. Watson and Mrs. Watson live ordinary lives. Sometimes their lives feel a bit too ordinary. Sometimes they wish something different would happen. And one day it does, when someone unpredictable finds her way to their front door. In a delightful origin story for the star of the Mercy Watson series, a tiny piglet brings love (and chaos) to Deckawoo Drive -- and the Watsons' lives will never be the same.

A Piglet Named Mercy! 🐽 This MF, RT is book I can‘t wait to read to my future class! The story is about a very ordinary couple (the Watson‘s) and their ordinary life. Until one day, a piglet was just chilling on their doorstep! It seems as though the Watsons‘ life isn‘t so ordinary anymore. The overall theme is love!💕 In a classroom, UDL principle 9.3- develop self-assessment and reflection would be of great use. Being that students can...

ESOL strategy #16- integrating listening activities into any curriculum can be beneficial so we know our students are attentive (I imagine this as a readers theatre so listening is very important). The following website gives fun ways to incorporate listening activities into your curriculum... https://www.encourageplay.com/blog/listening-games-for-kids #ucflae3414sp21 (edited) 3y
PatriciaS Thank you for this great book review 👍 teacher resource and strategies for this read. Also, for your suggestion for readers theater 🎭 and using this book as a good tool for listening skills and paying attention. These are great skills for students to learn and utilize through readers theater. 3y
DrSpalding The second sentence doesn‘t quite make sense but I know what you mean! I adore this book and the transitional chapter book series based on the same cute character, Mercy! Your English learner and universal design principle work well and you have explained them along with your website resource and teaching strategy. Please do use readers theater in your future classroom. 3y

Such a cute book! This RF book hooked me from the start! This is a beautiful story about the Watson family‘s life was turned upside down by a sweet and unpredictable pig! This is a great way to introduce your student to the author‘s novel series about Mercy and the Watsons!

DrSpalding I love Mercy! Check out the chapter book series based on this awesome 🐷!❤️📚 (edited) 3y
Mmurphy I would use this book as a RT for my students. I can use this strategy to offer a way to customize the display of information (1.1)UDL. By doing a RT, students are able to understand the story through another lens to better process the story. For my EL‘s I would offer a script for them to read highlighting key words I want them to act out with the other actors and actresses in the story. (30) We can use this resource to create a successful RT: (edited) 3y
DrSpalding Guess what… One of your peers turned this into a readers theater and it is on the Google site! Check it out! 3y

Mercy Watson started out as a beginning chapter book series for grades 1 plus. I am happy to see a picture book version for read alouds. This tells how a piglet came to live with the Watson‘s and get her name Mercy. It‘s really cute and I love how Van Dusen illustrated Baby and Eugene.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I haven‘t read any of the other Mercy books yet, which is odd given my love for both Kate DiCamillo and pigs but this morning seemed like a good time to read this cute picture book.

While it didn‘t have the powerful takeaway I‘m accustomed to with DiCamillo‘s books, it was certainly a sweet little story and I am looking forward to some more Mercy in my life when I finally start the related series.
