pickIt's only a slight exaggeration when I say i went from Judy Blume to Stephen King; I don't recall the being a big push of middle grade books like there is today. But this series was somewhere in the bookstore in the 1980s and I'm angry that i didn't know sbout it.

Decided to check out Dresden Files. Pretty fun so far.
pickDifferent kind of story than Gone Girl. The murder mystery was kind of weak but I think it was more the story of the investigator. She's dealing with stuff, and it was tough to read.
This is a humorous foreshadowing when you consider that Jefferson and Hamilton were archenemies in Washington's first term. Madison, who co-wrote most of the Federalist Papers with Hamilton, will end up siding with Jefferson.
The original gerrymander - used in the very first elections by one of the famous patriots against the guy that wrote the Constitution. Patrick Henry was very much against the new Constitution and kind of bitter at Madison for out-arguing him in convincing Virginia to adopt it.
"Bola knows I am single and has made it her mission to find me a mate. I don‘t like this because … well, when people match-make they introduce people to you whom they think are sufficiently like you. Each person they bring is a commentary on how they see you. If I‘ve never liked anyone Bola has introduced me to does that mean she doesn‘t know me well enough or that she does know me, but I hate myself?
Today's library haul. I discovered last night that a graphic novel of Nnedi Okorafor's Black Panther run was out and had to go get it.
I hope to return. I'll do so if I'm not killed. Probably will anyway.
Judy Blume has a yet-to-be-named movie coming out. She had one movie in 2013, but it wasn't based on anything of hers that an old guy like me had heard of. How has none of her classic stories never made it to the screen?

panIf I'm being too harsh on this book, it's because I was led to believe I could enjoy it as an adult, like the Harry Potter or Percy Jackson books. This book was not on that level.
Mostly, I think, is that I didn't care for the author's sense of humor. One book on my TBR list was the not-Adams Hitchhiker's Guide book which I was persuaded to give a shot one day, but when I discovered Colfer was the writer of both that book as well... hard pass.
She had a natural thing for turkeys. Like she could find a wild turkey a mile away. And they came to her. She‘d call them—she had this turkey call she could do—and they would come. It may not be the superpower you hoped for as a kid, but if you‘re starving to death and you need to eat, being able to call a turkey is pretty damn useful.
What a disquieting revelation it had been to live in a place that functioned perfectly fine without jade and without clans. The two things that all the men in Shae's family worshipped, that she'd been taught her whole life to hold above all else - other places did without them.
There is a beauty here, a calmness that I savor. I will savor the bloodshed, too, no doubt, but this balance between earth and animal and self feels right. Feels true.

You have to help another person. But it‘s not right to play God with masses of people. To be God you have to know what you‘re doing. And to do any good at all, just believing you‘re right and your motives are good isn‘t enough. You have to … be in touch.
pickThis is the worst -written book I have ever enjoyed.
