A bottle of petite Syrah spilled on this magical book, and I wonder if it was on purpose.

I loved this book so very, very much. Now I need more Georgian, Russian, and Slavic literature.

I‘ve been wondering how a midwife might solve mysteries, because we do all the time. :-) Looking forward to how it‘s done here.

OK, if I ever quit being a midwife, I‘m going to get my long-fantasized-about degree in library science. Librarian and midwife — two subversive vocations.

Is this book triggering to anyone else? No? Just me with the prepper, fundamentalist, delusional family members and the midwifery and the fear of prosecution? It had such a benign-looking cover. Comfort read after this one.

BirdsandBelles @ReadingMidwife I want to read this! 👍🏻 5y

Ah, it is hard to speak of what it was,
that savage forest, dense and difficult,
which even in recall renews my fear:
so bitter — death is hardly more severe!

Lovely book. My favorite story was the last one, "The Third and Final Continent."

tbreit This book keeps popping up on my radar. I have a copy in my office...it might be next. Moving up the TBR pile! 7y

Play an ant, he suggested. Ants lift fifty times their own weight. You need that strength.
Play a chimp, Mama suggested. There is no dignity in it, I know, but the intelligence is fair compensation. You must be smart.

This book needs. to. end. Trudging in that direction....

clbeyer Nice progress, though! Is this no Silas Marner? 7y
ReadingMidwife It's been so long since Silas Marner, but I think that one has about enough for a 10th-grade attention span. This feels heavily embroidered, with many interweaving plot lines, and it just goes on forever. The charm dulled for me about page 500. I'm close to page 700 now. 800 is the end! Awful when you start focusing on that. 7y
