Ah, it is hard to speak of what it was,
that savage forest, dense and difficult,
which even in recall renews my fear:
so bitter — death is hardly more severe!

Lovely book. My favorite story was the last one, "The Third and Final Continent."

tbreit This book keeps popping up on my radar. I have a copy in my office...it might be next. Moving up the TBR pile! 2y

Play an ant, he suggested. Ants lift fifty times their own weight. You need that strength.
Play a chimp, Mama suggested. There is no dignity in it, I know, but the intelligence is fair compensation. You must be smart.

What is a misfit to do? I could not look away from this strange, beautiful book, especially as I examine what it means not to hide one's true self from the world.

This book needs. to. end. Trudging in that direction....

clbeyer Nice progress, though! Is this no Silas Marner? 2y
ReadingMidwife It's been so long since Silas Marner, but I think that one has about enough for a 10th-grade attention span. This feels heavily embroidered, with many interweaving plot lines, and it just goes on forever. The charm dulled for me about page 500. I'm close to page 700 now. 800 is the end! Awful when you start focusing on that. 2y

The root meaning of the English word midwife is "with woman." Midwives were known for their knowledge and skill in an area of life that was a mystery to most people; sometimes they were thought to possess magical or mystical abilities. Written history suggests that many were revered, but others were feared, and sometimes tortured and killed.

Whatever their title, [the shaman or medicine man/woman] received what others believed was a vision or a deep spiritual insight into their patients. They never lost sight of the spiritual side of health and disease, realizing the power of the mind.

It's chilling thought, that politicians have learned to manipulate the television medium better than the television professionals themselves. When old Cronkite first realized this was happening he imagined the kinds of people who would become politicians in the future. And he shuddered with fear.
