I think this is the shortest classic I‘ve read (or the shortest one on my shelves, anyhow, at 92 pages).🤔

rubyslippersreads Gorgeous photo and portrait! 😍 4y
LeahBergen @ReadZenRites @rubyslippersreads Thanks! I “saved” her from an antique auction when no one was bidding on her. 😂 I call her “Daisy” as she reminds me of Daisy Buchanan in The Great Gatsby. 4y

#shortestclassicyouread #MayLovesClassics
These mini penguin books were made for the 60th anniversary - here are 3 i could immediately put my hands on and the lead book is a classic - otherwise it would have been candide which i just finished as parr of the challenge.

Leftcoastzen Nice looking covers ! 4y
Aimeesue I was going to comment on the Melville, but decided that I prefer not to. 😋 4y

#Littens are over here talking about #shortestclassicyouread and I've just posted the longest classic I (so far) failed to finish to my #Instagram 🤣 The shortest classic I read is Uncle Vanya at 49 pages. Though technically a play! The next shortest was The Yellow Wallpaper at 64.

One of the perfect weird fiction stories ever written. I recall reading somewhere that, inspired by a dream he had, Stevenson penned the novel in a handful of days. His wife was so horrified by the nature of the story that she burnt the first draft, but he was obsessed by the idea & rewrote it from scratch in a white-hot rush, and that was the version which saw print.

PickwickPlockPlock When I was in Edinburgh a tour guide told us that Stevenson had been inspired by the case of Deacon Brodie. He was a respectable citizen by day, a cabinet-maker, and at night a criminal. He made a copy of the keys and hired criminals to break into the houses of his customers. 4y
Amanda23 The art is fantastic!! 4y

rohit-sawant @PickwickPlockPlock Oo, that's a fascinating fact! Had no idea. Thanks for sharing! 4y
readordierachel I would be pretty pissed if my spouse burned my story draft 😓😆 4y
LeahBergen I didn‘t know these fun facts! 4y
batsy I love this book! Was actually so taken aback when I first read it, because I expected it to be a dry slog. It hurts to read about his spouse destroying the draft 😭 So intrigued that he rewrote it all in a kind of fever... We'll never know otherwise of course, but that second draft is pretty darn perfect! 4y
rohit-sawant @ReadOrDieRachel Such a nightmare, isn't it? 😱 4y
rohit-sawant @LeahBergen So fascinated by what @PickwickPlockPlock shared! Really interested in learning more about the origin now. 4y
rohit-sawant @batsy Absolutely! I think I first came across the figure of Jekyll & Hyde in an episode of Scooby Doo as a kid & then in other media & was surprised by how much I enjoyed the book when I first read it. It's been a favorite since. Isn't that just devastating about the first draft? Considering how much of an impact the novel has had on literature and pop culture, it's unthinkable that it almost didn't see the light of day! 4y
kspenmoll Sounds great! 4y
Tiyas7 @rohit-sawant Really Hurts About the First Draft!!! I Wonder How Many Such Novels never saw the light of the day, destroyed in their first draft. What If Any of Those Nameless works were actually tremendous pieces of literature? Who Knows? 4y
