A House in the Sky: A Memoir | Amanda Lindhout, Sara Corbett
post image

4.5/5 ⭐️ As disturbing this book was, I really enjoyed it. I think why I liked it is the brutal honesty that Amanda described her captivity.

One thing I would have liked to have a bit more information on is about her life post captivity, but that was really the only downside to the book. #2024 #bookreview #nonfiction #canadian #bookclub #truestory

A page turner! Nora‘s mom groomed her from birth to be a con artist mom/daughter duo. Nora escapes but finds herself in a perilous situation where she‘s forced to tap into her upbringing to survive.
3.75 ⭐️ because I wanted a deeper connection with characters. Also, it‘s sad that authors have to put safety info in the back so they don‘t get torn apart on the internet. Author used an illness and had to clarify she knew the extent of it 🙄

While not my favorite of Ann Patchett‘s books, it was still a good read, at times quite beautiful.

#TBRTarot @CBee

Ruthiella What‘s your favorite? This is mine, though it‘s also the first one I read, which probably plays into it. 😀 1mo
AmyG @Ruthiella Tom Lake followed by The Dutch House. 1mo
Ruthiella Awesome, I‘ve not read either of those yet. 1mo

Lesliereadsalot Me too…Tom Lake and then The Dutch House. 1mo
wanderinglynn How far are you from Denver? I‘m coming to Denver May 4-8. 1mo
AmyG @wanderinglynn I am about 2 hours away but I am out of town the first half of May. 😞 1mo
wanderinglynn @AmyG bummer! 1mo
AmyG @wanderinglynn I‘m sorry. My end of April half of May schedule is bananas. 1mo
wanderinglynn No worries! I interviewed for a job there & have a second interview on Monday. So I thought I‘d fly out & check out some potential places to live just in case. 1mo
AmyG Oh Wow! Lynn, my daughter lives there. If you‘d like…I can ask her if it‘s ok for you to contact her if you have any questions (she always says yes but I like to ask first). She has lived in Denver for about 10 + years. @wanderinglynn (edited) 1mo

Suet624 I think it's definitely worth trying it again. Good luck! 1mo
AmyG Thanks @Suet624 …I had started this, my first Patchett, and bailed. But I have read a few of her books and loved them so it was time to try it again. 1mo

JillR I have this and also tried starting it and didn‘t get far, and have also loved her other books. Watching out for your review with interest! Something about this one makes me nervous whenever I look at it 😬 1mo
Lesliereadsalot Frankly I don‘t remember this book although I read all of her books. Had to look up the plot and still don‘t remember it! 1mo
TheLudicReader It‘s worth the effort…once you settle in, it‘s just a beautiful story. 1mo
AmyG @TheLudicReader That‘s what so many people say and why I am giving it another try. @JillR I will let you know! 1mo
CBee Hope you like! ☺️ 1mo

Golden State: A Novel | Michelle Richmond

Yeah, I didn‘t get this at all. There‘s alternate history dystopian elements (California voting on succeeding from the US), traditional contemporary fiction elements (couple divorcing), and this weird thriller part (ex taking co-workers hostage). It truly felt like three books and the sum was definitely less than its parts. Fusion confusion for sure!! One more #roll100 out of the way!

Ruthiella At least it‘s now off the list! 3mo
BarbaraBB I now know three books with this title! Liked both others though! 3mo

This is really good; hypnotizing me with a laconic anticipation that inevitable tragedy seems less believable but more imminent with every turned page. I‘d read more by Patchett, and recommend this without reservation.

One of the best of the Kate Burkholder series: Amish man Joseph King was convicted for killing his wife/mother of their 5 kids, but, claiming innocence, has escaped prison and taken the kids and Kate hostage…
Nice twists

Thank you @Chelsea.Poole for this awesome template! This will be so helpful for keeping my #Bookspin and #Doublespin picks organized!

Bookspin-Bel Canto (also one of my February #Roll100 picks)
Double spin-Homegoing (last months #FoodandLit pick that I didn‘t get to)

CBee Homegoing is AMAZING ♥️♥️ 3mo
Maggie4483 @CBee I‘m struggling with it right now, but I‘m definitely going to keep going, because I‘m quickly realizing my own ignorance about this terrible chapter in history. 3mo
Mary_Reads Any time a song was mentioned in Bel Canto, I would pull up Spotify and play it while I read the section. It really made the novel come alive. It was a beautiful experience. 3mo

CBee @Maggie4483 it‘s definitely worth it. Not an easy book to read but so important. 3mo
