Figured the #choosekind tip of the week was more than appropriate to share here.
If you do it, tag me so I can see a chain of book swaps begin!!

smilingshelves I actually did this! About a month ago, a former student asked to borrow The Art of Racing in the Rain so he could read it before watching the movie. When he saw me Monday, he assured me he would return it soon. I told him he could keep it. He was so excited! 2mo

A recipient of the Sunshine State Young Readers award, Wonder is written by R.J. Palacio. A RF about 10 year-old Auggie, who lives in Manhattan. He was born with facial deformity and is starting to attend school. The book take on view points from different characters and could be used for a LC. #ucflae3414su19

SarynaN https://createteachshare.com/2017/03/a-new-favorite-were-all-wonders.html This site includes a printable writing prompt to accompany the book. It asks students to consider how we are all wonders. The book and activity will cover ESOL strategy 36 and UDL 9.3 5mo
Kcompton2912 I love the writing prompt you provided in your post. I think this would be a great lesson where a teacher does a RA with the book, follows it with the movie, and then ends with the prompt! The book will definitely challenge the thinking of young readers and there viewpoint of the world/others! 4mo
DrSpalding Using great books like this to springboard a writing activity is an excellent idea. We are all wonders! #ChooseKind 4mo

365 Days of Wonder: Mr.Browne‘s Book of Precepts written by R.J. Palacio is a fiction book that has inspiring quotes for every day of the year. The quotes range from history, love, friendship, courage, and kindness. This would be a fun thing to do with the class as a bell ringer. We could start the morning by reading a quote and then writing about it or the teacher can simply ask comprehension questions about it. #ucflae3414su19

DeannaP https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Comprehension-Questions-for-365-Days... An ESOL strategy to go with the lesson is to “continually monitor students comprehension” the teacher can do that by having the students write the quote and what they think it means in a journal. 5mo
DeannaP An E.D strategy to go with it is to “highlight patterns, critical features, big ideas, and relationships” since they would be finding the main idea of the quote and comparing it to their background knowledge. 5mo
DrSpalding This is such a fabulous book. Did you know there is an app? Its called The Daily Wonder App!

"Choose Kind” is not just a saying, it is a way of life. A amazing and tear jerking F novel by R.J. Palacio that reaches beyond the words on pages an into the heart of the readers. While reading this book, I cried three times and I just want to read it again! I have nothing but praise for little Auggie.

This emotional RF book by R.J. Palacio is great to use for a LC or even a RA throughout the semester/unit. I think it‘s important for children to embark on the journey Auggie takes us, and see that it‘s not what‘s on the outside that counts, but what‘s on the inside. We don‘t need to judge a book on its cover, but by the contents. Auggie sees the world in a better way than most of us do, and his story proves it. #UCFLAE3414SuB18

prissy.mooney wonderthebook.com/for-teachers is an awesome site for teachers to see how to teach the lessons and themes that were present in the book, how to make a difference in the classroom, talk about craniofacial differences, and even download various resources to use inside and outside of the classroom. 1y
prissy.mooney UDL 6.3 allows for the opportunity to facilitate managing information and resources while EL 16 integrates speaking, listening, reading and writing activities 1y
RossoS I loved this book!! I really liked the resource because it provided some great ideas on activities that I‘m most definitely going to share with my students👍🏼 1y

“When given the choice between being right or being kind, choose kind.”

Re-reading this gem for book club and I‘ve already fallen back in love with this story. I hope this becomes required middle school reading, someday. 💕

RF. LC. This New York Times best seller will have you on a rollercoaster of emotions. It follows the life of Auggie Pullman, a little boy who has a medical condition that has left him with a severe facial "deformity." This book has quickly become a favorite of mine and I would recommend it to every teacher to help tackle bullying in their classroom. #choosekind UDL 8.4 Increase mastery-oriented feedback. #UCFLAE3414SP18

ambera ESOL 32. Use student pairs for team learning especially for reports, experiments, and projects. 2y

Wonder is a Realistic fiction (RF) novel about a boy named August who was born with Treacher Collins Syndrome. The books takes you through August Pullman‘s life as the new kid in 5th grade. I think all students and teachers should read this book, it has an amazing message about kindness that everyone can learn from. Choosing kindness makes a huge difference. Wonder is a #1 New York Times best seller and I understand why!
#UCFLAE3414SP18

kylamarie5 I think this book would be great to do an Author Study (AS) on. It would help understand why the author decided to write this book and the sequels. I think learning about R.J Palacio‘s background would be a good opportunity for students. This website explains how to do Author Studies and why they‘re useful. http://www.readingrockets.org/books/authorstudy/howto 2y
kylamarie5 UDL: 6.3- Facilitate managing information and resources (the teacher can help with resources to use and would give information to the students).
EL: 32- Use student pairs for teaming learning, especially for reports, experiments and projects (the AS could be done in pairs).

Laura.S @kylamarie5 I loved this book and I think it‘s such a good idea to do an author study for Palacio. It would be really great for students to learn why the book was wrote so they could see the meaning behind #choosekind. 2y

JordanL This book snagged my attention as I've heard it from two different classes now and that it became a movie. I'm very intrigued about this book I must say, and I think this book would be a great read for a Read Aloud as it allows students to understand kindness. Glad you enjoyed it! 2y
Noelle5 Yes I loved this book! Read it for independent LC! Also went to the movie and loved it. It‘s such an emotional but feel good book and movie. I think all teachers should read this book to their students. I love the focus on bullying and how he overcame that and how bullying can effect someone‘s self esteem. 2y
Jeffersleighann I fell IN LOVE with this book! I feel in love with Summers kindness and Jacks kindness as well. I love how it‘s written with different sides of the story and showing that August really isn‘t that different. 2y

I've been reading Wonder to my kids.
We've had to put reading on hold (We had borrowed a digital copy from the library and it had expired) The wait list to borrow it again is extremely long and I think in going to have to source the book elsewhere so we can finish reading about August.

Hate the wait list!
