Wonder
Wonder | R J Palacio
Soon to be a major film starring Julia Roberts, Owen Wilson and Jacob Tremblay. 'My name is August. I won't describe what I look like. Whatever you're thinking, it's probably worse.' Auggie wants to be an ordinary ten-year-old. He does ordinary things - eating ice cream, playing on his Xbox. He feels ordinary - inside. But ordinary kids don't make other ordinary kids run away screaming in playgrounds. Ordinary kids aren't stared at wherever they go. Born with a terrible facial abnormality, Auggie has been home-schooled by his parents his whole life. Now, for the first time, he's being sent to a real school - and he's dreading it. All he wants is to be accepted - but can he convince his new classmates that he's just like them, underneath it all? WONDER is a funny, frank, astonishingly moving debut to read in one sitting, pass on to others, and remember long after the final page.

AMAZING BOOK! Great for all children, but especially a great read aloud for upper grades. Children are able to create their own image of August in their head and fall in love with the kindness of his character. He is a great example of not knowing what someone else is going through and as a reader you are able to hear his thoughts throughout the chapters as his character develops.

Contemporary fiction. This book represents contemporary fiction because it Is set in the recent past. It also explores social aspects about children who have facial difference. I enjoyed this book very much as it goes through the struggles of Auggie the main character and how he overcomes them. This book was published in 2012.

A teacher could use this book as a writing prompt. I would use it to ask me what they would do if they were Augie in this situation? Or how would they help Augie if they were one of his classmates?

Okay, at first I felt a little silly reading a book about a bunch of middle schoolers. But this book was really good. It was sad, funny, heartbreaking, and happy all at once. I agree with August Pullman, everyone in the world should get a standing ovation at least once in their life. I‘m so happy to “see” Auggie get his standing ovation.

#choosekind my 11-yr old asked me to read this because she is reading it & thought it was good. It is good. And sad, and heartbreaking. I told her I‘m glad I read it, but reading it once is enough, but that it‘s probably a good idea of what middle school is all about. The kids are mean, trying to figure out who they want to be, but that you can always be kind and stay true to you.

I really really enjoyed this book. It tells the story of a boy who is born with facial deformities and his experience of starting school. He is homeschooled until the 6th grade which then he is out into school and deals with the struggles of bullying, making friends, and much more

If you like books that are about emotional story‘s then you‘ll really enjoy this

The theme of this novel is both internal and external struggles with self confidence

Carter.reynolds And his ability to deal with all of that whilst he is learning and exploring his passions 2y
