Lately, I‘ve been thinking about the art of book pairing. I mentioned it with my recent pairing of two political books, and folks seemed interested in the idea. I‘ll bet you do it too, intentionally or not.

Here‘s my blog post—Book Pairing 101. http://thebibliophage.com/book-pairing-101/

Enjoy!

BennettBookworm Wow, thanks for this! Such a fascinating and helpful read! 5y
thebluestocking I love how you explore this topic. I tend to pair based on topic similarities (even slight ones), so your list gave me more options. 5y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @thebluestocking Thank you!! I do that kind of pairing too. I need to add it to the list!! 👊🏻😎📚 5y

The Handmaid's Tale | Margaret Atwood
post image

I decided to start Women‘s History Month 2019 with two powerful women authors who portray fictional histories that point to real injustices and oppression in our world: a #bookpairing of The Handmaid‘s Tale by Margaret Atwood and The Power by Naomi Alderman. Two very different worlds, both terrifying dystopias at opposite ends of the spectrum. Separate book reviews to follow...

1462 pages later and I am done! This took awhile but it is so good! This was part of my #bookpairing with The Black Count and originally I was going to (unknowingly) read the abridged version. Well I decided to tackle this instead!! Well worth it but this took forever. I should have dug in from the get go instead of multitasking but alas I am done!

Notafraidofwords I have to say, I didn‘t enjoy this very much 6y
jmtrivera Impressive! Congrats! 6y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa Wonderful! Now I have questions for you? I‘ll tag you. 6y

MoniqueReads305 I accidently read the abridged version and didn't know it until months later. It's on my list of books to reread. 6y
JamieArc Congrats 🎉🎉. Those last words have been stuck in my head since I finished reading it weeks ago. 6y
TheNextBook @Notafraidofwords I really enjoyed it but I can tell it isnt for everyone! You have to be in for the long haul because it takes so long to get to the actual revenge!! 6y
TheNextBook @jmtrivera I had to finish this book! I couldn‘t dnf! I really wanted to know how it ended! 6y
TheNextBook @MoniqueReads305 I will definitely one day reread this book! But not for at least a year or two. 6y
TheNextBook @JamieArc I loved his character but man could he hold a grudge! 6y
JamieArc @TheNextBook I can‘t say I absolutely loved The Count. He could definitely hold a grudge (though his life was nearly ruined so I can‘t blame him for that) but I found him a little arrogant as well. He made himself into a great man and knew it. Definitely really liked the story though! 6y
Notafraidofwords @JamieArc I‘m a Taurus so I can hold grudges and pet them like someone pets a cat. However, his arrogance bothered me. 6y
TheNextBook @JamieArc @Notafraidofwords Thats part of why I loved it though! He was pulling a “Clark Kent” where the character he embodies reflects what he sees in society. He knew that people would only trust him and revere him if he embody the persona and part of that was being arrogant! 😂 I just thought it was insane how people were falling all over themselves over a man they had never met! Like I could never imagine that now because google is free! 6y
TheNextBook @Notafraidofwords did you say like some people pet cats! I can‘t! 😂 that has made it into my lexicon! 6y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @Notafraidofwords I‘ll second that, great phrase! 6y

The Three Musketeers | Alexandre Dumas

I know I already posted about Dumas, but he's everywhere I turn! I saw this crazy #cover in the library store when I went to drop off some books this afternoon. (I did a horrible job framing the shot, so this is all I could fit with the Litsy crop. I think it captured the important parts 😆)

TheNextBook He‘s my #bookpairing this month! 6y
readordierachel @TheNextBook I saw that! The Black Count sounds fascinating. Look forward to your review 6y

My #bookpairing for May! The inspiration for Alexander Dumas‘s The Count of Monte Cristo was his Black father so I‘m pairing these two stories! Will be reading mid May!

ReadingEnvy My book club read The Black Count and learned a lot! 6y
Notafraidofwords I‘m about 150 pages into the count of Monte cristo. It‘s a lot different than I expected. 6y
TheNextBook @readingenvy I‘ve had it forever and have really wanted to pair this and just didnt have the time! Making time now! 6y

TheNextBook @Notafraidofwords I don‘t know what to expect. Is it dry? Dense?! Are you entertained? 6y
Notafraidofwords @TheNextBook I don‘t really know how to answer that because I didn‘t have a specific expectation. I thought it would be really really really literary but it really isn‘t filled with beautiful sentences as I thought. I guess that‘s a misconception of mine that I have of classics. It‘s slightly more political than I thought. I find some of the politics a little dense. 6y
Notafraidofwords But im not that far in though. 6y
JamieArc @TheNextBook I‘m about 250 pages into The Count of Monte Cristo, and I‘m enjoying it way more than I thought I would! I figured that at over 1200 pages, there had to be passages that were boring or dry, but I‘m not finding that at all. It‘s good storytelling, engaging, and easy to read. 6y
batsy Having never read Count of Monte Cristo, this seems like a great plan and I should do this book pairing when I get around to it :) The Black Count sounds really interesting. 6y
TheNextBook @Notafraidofwords ok I‘ll tag you when I start! 6y
TheNextBook @JamieArc okay! I have this paperback but I think I‘m going to get it on my ebook! I‘m glad you are enjoying it. 6y
TheNextBook @batsy I‘ll let you know how it goes. As soon as I heard about The Black Count I was highly intrigued and this just sounded perfect. I‘m going to do pairings for the rest of the year and I‘m pretty sure it will be fiction/nonfiction the rest of the way. 6y

Initial thoughts on this #bookpairing: I‘m glad I read Barracoon first. It gave me the grounds to really start this journey with Dreams of Africa in Alabama. The latter is providing a ton of information about the slave trade and how it affected both the US and West African regions with its decline. Not done with Dreams. Will update again later

charl08 Wow. Adding both to the wishlist. 6y
TheNextBook @charl08 As of right now I am definitely suggesting that! Barracoon is a single narrative and I feel like Dreams is the full story. 6y

So I‘m ready to begin this book as a#bookpairing with Hurston‘s Barracoon. I‘m hoping this has a plethora of information about not just Cudjo but about the Clotilda and some of the other Africans on this ship.

#bookpairing
I‘m about halfway through A Dirty Job, and it‘s making me want to reread On A Pale Horse! That‘s a serious blast from the past- I first read it when I was 15! Another great, funny book about Death. Anyone read it?

JulAnna I read it-also a long time ago! Great concept, did you continue with the series? I think I made it to #5 (I have problems finished series sometimes). Maybe it is time for a re-read to the finish! 6y
Soubhiville @JulAnna I read 4 or 5 of them. I think I got distracted by Ann Rice, Interview With The Vampire, And never went back... lol. 6y
JessReads I loved these! Definitely worth finishing the series - while I didn‘t love 4/5 as much (I think those were Mars and maybe Earth?) 6/7 on Satan and God were 100% worth it! 6y

JessReads Also @JulAnna I lent our copies of 1 and 2 to a friend, so if you want to reread, I need to get those back 😬 6y
TobeyTheScavengerMonk Whoa, yeah mega nostalgia! Read all the Incarnations of Immortality in middle school. 6y
Chrys That‘s what I should do a reread of, the Incarnations series, it‘s been so long 6y
tysephine Oh man, the Incarnations of Immortality series! I loved those books as a teenager! 6y
Soubhiville @tysephine @Chrys @TobeyTheScavengerMonk @JessReads right?! So old school fantasy! Is Piers Anthony still writing? (edited) 6y
tysephine @Soubhiville apparently he published a Xanth novel in 2017, has another in process of being published, and another he is currently writing. Lol he's 83 and still killing it! 6y
Soubhiville @tysephine that‘s amazing! 6y

TTWIH made me ugly cry 😭. And I loved it so much! It‘s a story about family and love. And how sometimes when you think you‘re protecting someone you love, you are really depriving them of something beautiful and special and crucial. I loved June, CRB wrote a young teenager perfectly. I loved Finn and Toby, and wanted to hang onto them both.
I pictured TTWIH with THIF because I think they pair well. Very different but similar ❤️‘s.

bookwrm526 TTWIH made@me ugly cry too!! I haven‘t read the paired book, I might have to give it a try! 6y
