Once again I am conflicted as to how to rate this. I think the beginning of this could have benefitted from better organization. There was a lot of information thrown out, out there that eventually started to make sense, is my only real issue.

I am always fascinated by “exploration“ type books even if a lot of them are motivated by greed and colonialism. There is still so much merit there.

Doppoetry It was so interesting to read about Fawcett and the prospects of a lost civilization in the Amazon.

A part of me knows better, but a part of me hopes there is still a surviving ancient civilization that does its best to stay hidden to protect its peace. Something that is not meant for contemporary eyes to see.

Panpan

This started as an interesting story of an angry man living through his brother‘s slow death from AIDS. The writing and tone is a bit manic and in your face, but once I adjusted to it, it worked. But what ruined it for me is the main character is deeply misogynistic without examination of this and it gets so thick by the end it was just bad.

Bailedbailed

It started out great, but by page 121 my desire to read was almost non-existent. #HailTheBail 🙌🏼

Aims42 This was one that I did finish but I should‘ve just bailed. Not my cup of tea 👎 3mo
TheBookgeekFrau @Aims42 I'm glad I'm not alone in this! 😅 I just don't get all the love this book got 🤷🏻‍♀️ 3mo
StillLookingForCarmenSanDiego This was boring AF, but I think that was intentional to make the ending more impactful. It all kind of pops off at the end. But I didn't really find it worthwhile. And if I remember correctly, the epilogue pissed me off. 3mo
TheBookgeekFrau @StillLookingForCarmenSanDiego So boring!! What good is an impactful ending if you put your readers to sleep before they get there? 🤣 I couldn't even care about the characters who seemed like dust sheets draped over the furniture 3mo
Aims42 @StillLookingForCarmenSanDiego UGH! The epilogue almost made me throw the book across the room! I remember thinking, “I finished it for this?!?!?” And being super mad too 🤣 3mo
Aims42 @TheBookgeekFrau Definitely not alone 🩷 3mo

#FoodandLit A little behind this month! I found a Bolivian restaurant about 40 min from me. I ordered beef saltenas, pupusas revuelitas and pork chicharron con yuca b/c they ate a lot of pork and yuca in the jungle. The book was good. Looking back it was a sad book after all the jungle adventures but I enjoyed it and was glad to see the main character‘s growth. Bolivia

What a magnificent tale of loss, grief and ethical uncertainty.

Typically, I'm not a fan of the literary genre, but this one really fascinated me.
This enigmatic, heartfelt journey through the Amazon, being immersed in a different culture while grappling with personal inner turmoil just worked for me.

Now I will also need to explore Bel Canto.
