I Was Here | Gayle Forman

Pickpick

In trying to read down my TBR stacks this year, I‘ve found that I am drawn to books with dark themes when I go shopping!

This one is about a teen whose best friend died of suicide. She searches for a reason, because she didn‘t see it coming at all.

Although it‘s grief filled and immensely sad, there are happy moments and characters I really loved in here. And it made me think, offering some new perspectives.

Really good epilogue with 🔽

Soubhiville an explanation of the story the book was inspired by, as well as info for hotlines and other supports for those who might need it. 3y

Nightwoods: A Novel | Charles Frazier
post image
Pickpick

This is the first book I‘ve read by Charles Frazier. It showed up in my Little Free Library.

It‘s a slower paced thriller I guess? With some characters I really liked and a beautiful sense of place. I enjoyed it, it‘s not the kind of thing I read very often.

#ReadtheUS2021 #NorthCarolina

Ruthiella I‘ve only read Cold Mountain, but it was also very slow paced but with beautiful language. 3y
megnews Thirteen Moons was beautiful. 3y
Soubhiville @megnews I‘ve added it to my TBR. 😊 3y
charl08 I love all the red on the shelf... 3y

Kristin_Reads Love this! 3y
Hooked_on_books That‘s a great start! And I like your colorful progress map. 3y
AmyG What did you think of White Ivy? 3y
Soubhiville @AmyG I didn‘t care much for it. Pretty unlikable characters, especially the main character. But I felt for her some too, because I thought her family was kind of awful. 3y
AmyG Yep. I thought the same. And what a crazy ending. 3y
jewright This is such a neat idea! 3y
marleed A great book for Iowa is the newly published book by a Litsy author. I just read it and loved it. 3y

Monday's Not Coming | Tiffany D. Jackson

Claudia‘s best friend Monday is missing, but none of the adults in her life seem to take her concerns seriously.

This was a great YA thriller! The main character is learning to manage her dyslexia along with typical teenage struggles, and of course the loneliness of her friend being gone. I really enjoyed the author‘s description of the way Claudia was moved by and escaped into dance.

CBee This one was one of my fave reads last year ♥️ 3y

I think it would be useful for more authors and publishers to consider putting notes like this at the beginning of their books.

Gloss hits the pop scene and immediately takes off, and the four young singers have to dive headlong into the fast paced celebrity life. Lots of teenage drama and bad decisions, but also glimmers of trying to be friends and splashes of young love. I did enjoy this, even though there is sadness from the above warned.

Hollie I loved the “please be gentle with yourself.” It felt like a genuine trigger warning instead of “I better cover my ass in case someone is upset.” 3y
Soubhiville @Hollie I agree ❤️ 3y
Hooked_on_books I really liked this book. I had thought it was going to be fluffy, gossipy, and silly, and that‘s not at all what it is. For which I‘m glad. It‘s a serious meditation on fame and how it can damage and destroy. And I agree, the content warning is nice, especially at the front where someone could flip to it in a store and put the book back down if need be. Maybe someday all books will start this way. 3y

Soubhiville @Hooked_on_books I agree, much less a book about how great fame is, and much more what I imagine is true to life- barely doing the thing you are known for, in this case singing, and mainly exhaustingly being hauled from one engagement to another, and the horror of stalkers and controlling men making their buck off your talent. I appreciated the older mentor telling them most of their money would be from product branding, not performing. 3y
Soubhiville @Hooked_on_books it showed the exploitation by controlling men really well, and how easy that can be to fall into, as well as how difficult it is for young girls to negotiate those hurdles. 3y
Hooked_on_books I completely agree. Also, I feel like fame is packaged in such an appealing way typically, and this book made fame look ugly, which I suspect is much closer to the truth. I think anyone trying to be famous should read this first and then think about if that‘s what they still want. 3y

What an interesting book! The story of a marriage from first the husband‘s point of view, then the wife‘s in part 2. They turn out to be different in ways I wouldn‘t have guessed.

As with every marriage there are ups and downs, hot spots and downright chilly ones. From his point of view it seems pretty normal, and a lovely life together.

Then you get into her story and things change drastically. The end really shook me. Great book!

Soubhiville Thank you @MadDashReading I really enjoyed this! 💜 3y
ChaoticMissAdventures So good to hear I am starting it this weekend! 3y
Hooked_on_books I haven‘t been at all interested in this one, but you‘re making me rethink that. I may check this one out. 🤔 3y

Megabooks This book definitely made me feel! I still think about it years later. (edited) 3y
LeahBergen I liked this one! 3y
Moray_Reads @Hooked_on_books I was ready to bail on this one halfway through, didn't understand the hype. But by the end I thought it was utterly brilliant 3y
Soubhiville @Moray_Reads @Hooked_on_books I agree- part one is okay, good even, but I didn‘t understand the raves until part 2, when you start getting Mathilde‘s viewpoint. So if you start it, don‘t give up before that! 3y
atla Ooh, I need to get to this one soon. Florida is one of my favorite short story collections and I‘ve not read anything else by Groff. I love books with multiple perspectives on the same events. 3y
InkintheMargins Yay! I'm glad you liked it! ❤ 3y

Mehso-so

This wasn‘t what I was expecting or hoping for... it is a novel about a woman who travels from the UK to Alaska to prove that a woman can have the same kind of freedom and solitude that the “wild men” like Thoreau and McCandless. She goes by boat, dog sled, bus, and hitchhiking.

Along the way, and especially once she arrives at her cabin, it gets heavily bogged down with philosophical rambling, unfortunately too much for me.

This is a haunting and heartbreaking memoir about Natasha‘s mother‘s terrifying relationship with her abusive, obsessive, and eventually murderous husband. It‘s beautifully written, incredibly sad, and definitely not for the faint hearted. I‘m glad I listened, but I feel a little broken now. 🥺

While this wasn‘t quite as great as RPO, I still enjoyed this second romp of a quest through the Oasis. Yes, Wade is an ass at the beginning, but once he got back into the swing of a mission, I liked him again.

There‘s of course a ton more 80‘s references and fan-boying. My favorite was Prince, in all his heavenly forms.

Fun, even if it is just an extension of book one. I hope Cline lets it lie here, no sequel needed.

IamIamIam I was going to pick this up but I had heard some bad reviews and got concerned... I might still grab it for my husband's birthday. 😁 3y
Soubhiville @IamIamIam if you loved book one I think you‘ll enjoy this one too. As long as you aren‘t expecting anything profoundly different. 3y
AmyG I will just look at lovely Seitje (spelling?). Book? What book? 3y
See All 10 Comments
Soubhiville @AmyG you spelled it right! Lol, she is also trying to pretend there is no book. 3y
AmyG She reminds me of Lou...our favorite house guest. ❤️ 3y
Soubhiville @AmyG I don‘t remember seeing holiday pictures with Lou... did she visit? 3y
AmyG She did! I am not sure I even took a picture. One night we let her out back and she just took off. She never did this before. We were all yelling and freaking out- but she came back. Lou was a bad girl this vacation. She lost her free reign privileges. 🤣 I was the idiot screaming TREATS and shaking the bag. When she got back, and got reprimanded, she spent the evening cuddled with me- the safe person witth the treats.🤣 (edited) 3y
Soubhiville Oh no @AmyG that sounds terrifying! I‘d have been having a meltdown too! I‘m so glad she came back safely. 😅 3y
bookishdawg Cline mentioned in an interview he may do a prequel focusing on Halliday... that I‘d be up for! 👍🏻 3y
